Sebastian Walcott steals base in season debut

Walcott has hit the ground running in his return from elbow surgery, going 7-for-17 with two home runs and two steals in five games. He put on nearly 20 pounds of muscle while rehabbing the elbow, and that should only help his impressive power ceiling. He’s likely to finish the remainder of this season at Double-A, but he could begin next year in Triple-A with a chance at an early call-up.

Walcott is seeing his first game action since undergoing an internal brace procedure on his right elbow back in late February. The 20-year-old top prospect has been on a rocket ship towards the majors since signing with the Rangers back in 2023. He hit .255/.355/.386 with 13 homers and 32 steals in 552 plate appearances as a teenager at Double-A Frisco. He doesn’t offer massive stolen base upside, but he might have one of the highest power ceilings of any middle infield prospect in the minors.

Walcott is roughly two months removed from an internal brace procedure on his right elbow and isn’t expected to be ready to return to game action until at least mid-July. The 20-year-old shortstop remains one of the top fantasy prospects in the game but he’s highly unlikely to reach the majors until 2027.

Walcott is the big name here, and the infielder had no shot of making the Opening Day roster even before his internal brace surgery last week that will keep him out for most — if not all — of the 2026 season. He is one of the best prospects in the sport, however, and it’d be a mistake for fantasy managers to not continue to roster him in keeper formats.

The fact that Wolcott was able to avoid a full Tommy John surgery is good news. He will reportedly be able to start hitting in five or six months, which means he could be back in the cage in August. The Rangers would obviously love to get the 19-year-old top prospect a few minor league at-bats to end the season, but perhaps he can play in the Arizona Fall League and then be fully ready to go in 2027.

The 19-year-old shortstop was shut down during the Arizona Fall League due to what had been termed as arm fatigue. It seems there was a more serious underlying elbow issue at play. The Rangers are hopeful that he’ll be able to undergo the internal brace procedure rather than the full Tommy John surgery, which would give him a quicker timeline to return. Either way though, Walcott is expected to miss the bulk of the 2026 season while recovering.

Landry adds that Walcott will undergo further evaluation in the coming days to determine his next steps. The 19-year-old shortstop prodigy is universally-regarded as one of the top handful of prospects in baseball entering next season after batting .255/.355/.386 with 13 homers and 32 steals in 124 games this past season as one of the youngest everyday players in the Double-A Texas League. He went 2-for-4 with a double in his lone AFL contest this fall. It’s not a cause for alarm, especially for dynasty managers, but it’s a developing situation worth monitoring closely.

Walcott is starting to look like the top prospect in the dynasty landscape again with two homers in his last three games, including a 108-mph laser beam in this one. The 19-year-old prodigy remains one of the youngest hitters in the entire Texas League this season and is up to 10 round-trippers through 80 games at the Double-A level. He doesn’t offer the stolen base upside of a Konnor Griffin, Leo De Vries or Jesús Made, but his realistic over-the-fence power ceiling is virtually unmatched among his peers at the position.

Clark and fellow Tigers top prospects Kevin McGonigle and Josue Briceño, who were all promoted earlier this month to Double-A Erie, anchor a junior circuit lineup that is jam-packed with intriguing talents. McGonigle might be the top pure hitter in the minor leagues and has cemented his status as a legitimate top-five prospect for dynasty purposes thanks to his blend of elite plate skills and consistent hard contact. The rest of the lineup features fellow elite shortstop prospect Sebastian Walcott in addition to fascinating slugger Jhostunxon Garcia, also known as The Password. Walcott recorded the first multi-homer performance of his career on Friday and is up to eight round-trippers this season as one of the youngest players in the entire Texas League. The 19-year-old prodigy is arguably the top non-debuted prospect in the dynasty landscape — with the notable exception of Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony — given his ability to hit for power at such a young age. He’s up to 21 extra-base hits through 45 games this season at the Double-A level. He’ll likely finish the year on the doorstep of the majors as the top prospect in fantasy baseball.
