Taj Bradley yielded five runs in five innings Saturday in a loss to the Cubs.

Bradley surrendered a solo homer in the first, two runs on a single, a walk and a double in the second and two more runs on two walks, a single and a double in the third. If not for the free baserunners, it would have been a fine outing. As is, he took his first loss since June 9. Bradley fanned six. He’s 12th in the majors with 124 strikeouts but also tied for 14th with 43 walks. He’ll take a 3.85 ERA into his next start in Cleveland.
Mets' ace Scott is finding his groove again
James Schiano discusses Mets' pitcher Christian Scott's strong stretch over his last six starts and why the Mets right-hander could emerge as a top-50 starting pitcher for the rest of the season.

He’ll be followed by Taj Bradley on Saturday afternoon and Zebby Matthews on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The expectation is that Joe Ryan would then start on Monday against the Guardians in Cleveland. Ober is coming off of a decent first half where he registered a 4.40 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 51/19 K/BB ratio over 71 2/3 innings in his first 13 starts.

Bradley was outstanding again, and this makes back-to-back starts where the 25-year-old has struck out double-digit hitters. The only run allowed was a solo homer by Rhys Hoskins, and sans that, he had zero issue disposing of the Cleveland lineup while picking up his eighth victory of the season and lowering his ERA to 3.67. After going through a bit of a dip in the middle of June, Bradley has really looked the part, and he’ll get a chance to keep it going against the lowly Angels on Sunday.

This was the good version of Bradley. His velocity was up a bit and his fastball sat just above 98 mph and touched 100 mph a couple of times. With that, he had no fear challenging the Astros’ hitters with it in the zone. Apart from that, he had solid command of his secondaries. The Astros have a very right-handed heavy lineup and Bradley used his more slider-ish cutter breaking down and away against them. Also, he was mostly consistent with his splitter below the zone and even stole a few called strikes with it early in the count when he needed to. His 11 strikeouts matched a career-high and he now has a 3.86 ERA, 102 strikeouts, and 38 walks through 88 2/3 innings this season. He’s lined up to face the Guardians next time out in his final outing before the All-Star break.

Bradley scattered just three hits and three walks on the evening. He shut the Rockies out through the first seven innings, then returned for the eighth where he allowed a pair of hits before turning the ball over to the bullpen — and both runners ultimately scored. The 25-year-old hurler got 14 swings and misses on 99 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 29 percent. He’ll see if he can replicate this strong effort and further improve upon his 3.98 ERA and 1.28 WHIP when he squares off against the Astros in Houston on Wednesday.

Both runs scored on Jorge Barrosa’s homer in the fifth. Fortunately, Bradley had a little 16-0 lead before that happened. It would have been nice if he had been a bit more efficient and could have gone six or maybe even seven innings in the blowout, but that’s not Bradley’s game. At least he improved to 6-3 with his first win in six starts since coming off the IL. He’ll take a 4.11 ERA into a very promising matchup at home against the Rockies next week.

Bradley allowed five hits, and he struck out seven against one walk. Three of his four runs came off homers, and outside of those roundtrippers, it was a solid outing for the 25-year-old. It’s his best start since coming off the injured list, and an encouraging one after struggling in his previous few outings. Far from perfect, but encouraging. He’ll try and build on this outing against the Diamondbacks on Saturday in Arizona.

Bradley was off to a really nice start until Buster Olney called him underrated on Aor. 18. Since then, Bradley has served an IL stint and walked 19 while giving up 25 runs in 37 1/3 innings, which amounts to a 6.02 ERA. He gave up three homers, walked three and issued two wild pitches tonight. He’ll stay in the rotation, of course, and face the Cardinals on Sunday, but no one should be very enthused about him at this point.

Bradley gave up seven hits along with the five walks, so this could have been worse. Bradley was effective in his return from the IL against the Red Sox on May 23, but he’s given up nine runs in 8 2/3 innings since. He had a 1.63 ERA in his first five starts this season but a 5.18 ERA in six starts since. It seems like a good idea to stick with him in a two-start week against the Tigers and Cardinals next week, but if he struggles then, mixed leaguers probably ought to move on.

Bradley turned in his shortest outing of the season in this one, surrendering five hits, including a gargantuan 450-foot homer to Oneil Cruz in the third inning. He piled up six strikeouts and only walked two batters. The lackluster effort snapped a streak of three consecutive quality starts since April 29. He’s been one of this season’s more impressive breakthrough arms with a solid 3.21 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 65/21 K/BB ratio across 56 innings of work. He’ll take the ball at home against the division-rival Royals on Thursday.

Bradley was originally slated the take the ball for Thursday’s series finale against the White Sox. It’ll likely be a bullpen game instead. The positive news is that he’s healthy and there don’t appear to be any injury concerns here. He’ll get some extra rest before toeing the rubber at PNC Park later this week. The 25-year-old emerging fantasy stalwart struck out seven and allowed one run over five inning against the Red Sox in his return from the injured list last Saturday.

George Springer is not in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup for Sunday’s battle against the White Sox.

The Blue Jays have been careful to mix in off days for Springer in an effort to keep him healthy for the remainder of the season. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will serve as the club’s designated hitter in his absence while Sean Keys draws a start at first base and will bat sixth against White Sox’ right-hander Sean Burke on Sunday afternoon in Toronto.

Rob Refsnyder (knee) began a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday.

The 35-year-old has been shelved since June 27 due to inflammation in his right knee. He’s going to need at least a few games against live pitching before he’s an option to rejoin the Mariners. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready to go at some point during the upcoming week.

Red Sox released LHP Danny Coulombe.

The 36-year-old southpaw had been designated for assignment last week. Coulombe has struggled to a 4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a cringe-inducing 10/15 K/BB ratio over 22 innings with the Red Sox this season. He’s now free to explore options on the open market.

Chase Meidroth is not in the White Sox’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Blue Jays.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine day of rest for the 24-year-old second baseman. Sam Antonacci will cover second base in his absence while Randal Grichuk draws a start in left field and will bat seventh against Blue Jays’ right-hander Trey Yesavage.

Cole Young went 2-for-4 and hit a three-run homer Saturday as the Mariners topped the Giants 4-3 in 10 innings.

Young’s homer off Logan Webb gave the Mariners their only runs in regulation before Julio Rodríguez won the game with a sac fly in the 10th. It was Young’s 12th homer this season. His .254/.313/.400 line is hardly eyepopping, but for a 22-year-old playing in T-Mobile half of the time, it’s really quite impressive and bodes well for him being a quality regular for the next 10 or 12 years.

Bryan Woo yielded three runs — two earned — in six innings Saturday versus the Giants.

The earned runs came in the sixth on solo homers from Rafael Devers and Willy Adames, which checked in at just 339 and 358 feet, respectively. Apart from that, Woo was really good in striking out seven. The unearned run was especially unearned. Technically, it scored on a Luke Raley error, but Luis Arraez only reached in the first place on what should have been a Cole Young error but was deemed a single because that’s just how the league likes it. Woo will pitch in Texas next week, which makes for an even more favorable matchup than most of his home starts.

Logan Webb surrendered three runs in 6 2/3 innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Mariners.

Webb had a shutout going until Cole Young homered with two on and two out in the seventh. That made the game a 3-3 tie, so Webb remained winless in three starts this month. He’s allowed four homers in three outings in July after surrendering just five in his previous 14 starts. He’ll face the Angels next.

Travis Bazzana went 2-for-3 with a game-winning two-run homer as the Guardians beat the Pirates 5-3 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Bazzana also walked twice before his walkoff shot off Dennis Santana in the bottom of the ninth gave the Guardians a doubleheader sweep. Throw in his RBI triple in the matinee, and it was a big day for a rookie hitting just .158/.241/.197 in his previous 19 games. He’s at .253/.337/.410 overall in 67 big-league games.

Logan Allen allowed three runs — two earned — in 3 1/3 innings versus the Pirates in his spot start in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Serving as the Guardians’ 27th man, Allen allowed six hits, walked three and struck out three in his second appearance this year. It’s the first time in 98 games this year that the Guardians have needed to look beyond their usual five starters. Allen will now head back to Triple-A and wait for a more significant role to open up.

Khristian Curtis tossed five scoreless innings in a bulk role Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader against the Guardians.

Curtis came up big in his major league debut, only to watch the bullpen give up five runs behind him. As the 27th man for the doubleheader, he’ll return to Triple-A now, but at least he’s on the 40-man for the first time and in great position to get another look in the near future.
