David Bednar picked up a win after getting five outs in the eighth and ninth in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Dodgers.

Bednar relieved Fernando Cruz with two on in a tie game in the eighth and stranded both runners before Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the inning. In the ninth, Bednar walked Freddie Freeman in a 10-pitch at-bat to start the frame, but he retired three in a row afterwards. It’s Bednar’s second win to go along with two saves this month. He was forced to throw 32 pitches, but since he had a week off coming into the night, perhaps he’ll be available again Monday.

David Bednar pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save on Friday against the Phillies.

Bednar blanked the Phillies in his lone inning of work to secure the 1-0 shutout win for the Yankees. Bednar needed just nine pitches to get through the inning and used five of those pitches to strike out Bryce Harper. Bednar is a perfect three-for-three in save opportunities this month and hasn’t allowed an earned run over 8 2/3 innings.

Cruz picked up his second save of the season with David Bednar presumably unavailable to pitch against his former club following a 32-pitch effort during Sunday’s doubleheader against the Dodgers. The 36-year-old will continue to vulture the occasional save chance when the opportunity arises.

David Bednar struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning to convert a save against the Nationals on Saturday.

Bednar took the mound in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game against the Nationals with a two-run lead. He recorded two quick outs, then gave up a base hit to James Wood before inducing a groundout to end the game with his 18th save. Bednar has made 16 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run, giving him a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and a 45/12 K/BB ratio across 40 innings.

David Bednar threw two scoreless innings and picked up the win in New York’s win over the Nationals on Friday.

He sat down six Nationals batters in order despite striking out nobody. The Yankees were taxed from a bullpen game last night and had already used Fernando Cruz, the other pitcher who didn’t throw yesterday, earlier in the game. Bednar came in with the Yankees behind 3-2 in the eighth, then Jazz Chisholm staked the Yankees to the lead in the ninth and Bednar was able to finish things off in the bottom of the inning for a win. Not exactly the save we were hunting for, but it surely doesn’t hurt your fantasy team.

David Bednar pitched a perfect ninth inning while striking out three to pick up the save on Friday against the Twins.

In his first game since returning from the paternity list, Bednar was sharp. He needed 17 pitches to get through his lone inning of work and retired all three batters he faced via strikeout. Bednar’s scoreless inning streak now sits at 15 innings, as he has not allowed a run since May 18th.

He missed three days for his new job. Bednar should re-assume closing duties for the Yankees, though there hasn’t been much need for that role over the past seven games as New York’s hit a small tailspin.

Congrats to David Bednar and his growing family. He will likely return in the middle of the week and resume his closing duties. The Yankees will likely use a committee approach with him gone. In June, Brent Headrick has had the next best win probability added of all Yankees’ relievers, but Fernando Cruz has been pitching the highest leverage innings. Perhaps Cruz and Headrick will form a committee for the two or three days Bednar is gone.

David Bednar allowed one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Tigers on Wednesday.

Bednar made this save a bit too interesting when Dillon Dingler came up as the tying run with two outs in the ninth, but forced him to hit a lazy fly ball on the first pitch of the at-bat. That now makes it 11 consecutive scoreless outings for Bednar as he’s gotten his season completely back on track.

Bednar came in to protect a one-run lead in the eighth inning with a man on base and two outs. He got Spencer Torkelson to pop up before retiring the side in order in the ninth inning. Bednar locked up his 15th save. He has a 3.38 ERA and 2.97 xFIP. Bednar has been one of the safer closer options this year.

The 21-year-old righty was limited to just 24 starts in his final collegiate campaign at Coastal Carolina, but his stuff remained strong enough to ensure that he would still be a first-rounder. There’s an argument to be made that he’s the second-best pitching prospect in this draft class.
