Corbin Carroll (elbow) out Monday against A’s

Good news. Carroll was removed from Sunday’s game after going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. If he needs Monday off, Jorge Barrosa will probably get a start in the outfield.

Carroll was removed for a pinch hitter in the ninth inning in the extra-inning victory. He went 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts before leaving, and looked to be in a good amount of pain in his final at-bat. The Diamondbacks should have an update on Carroll’s potential availability soon.

Barrosa’s first game after Jordan Lawlar’s injury definitely helped his case for getting regular playing time in center field for at least the next month. The homer was his second of the season and third in 211 plate appearances as a major leaguer. The 25-year-old is currently hitting .184/.257/.359 in 116 plate appearances this season.

Lawlar missed two months after suffering a fractured wrist in his sixth game of the season in April. Now he’s back on the IL after injuring his hamstring in his sixth game after returning to the lineup. Manager Torey Lovullo said there’s some hope Lawlar could beat a potential four- to six-week timeline, but it seems likely that he’s out through the break. The Diamondbacks didn’t recall Ryan Waldschmidt as Lawlar’s replacement, instead choosing Tim Tawa, so it looks like Jorge Barrosa is about to see a significant playing time increase. They can also use Tommy Troy in center, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in left and Adrian Del Castillo at DH in search of more offense, not that Del Castillo has provided much to date.

Carroll needed “just” a homer for the cycle, as he also singled with a walk for good measure. The 25-year-old already has nine three-baggers on the season, and a 20-triple campaign can’t be ruled out; it’s right around what he’s on pace for. The double was his 16th, and the four runs driven in bring his total to 42. He’s having a good year, is what we’re saying.

Carroll made it a 5-1 game in the second by taking Sam Aldegheri deep. His batting average has been coming down some, but he now has six homers in 16 games in June. He totaled seven in 55 games over the first two months.

This is different. It’s mostly been Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll atop Arizona’s lineup the last few weeks with Perdomo hitting towards the bottom of the order. The 26-year-old has seemingly pulled out of his early-season tailspin at the dish, hitting .333 (14-for-42) with one homer and three steals in 13 games since the start of June. Marte remains in the leadoff spot with Carroll hitting third during Monday’s series opener at Chase Field.

Carroll put the Diamondbacks on the board with a solo homer off Michael Soroka in the first inning. The home run would be the only run Arizona would score on the day. The home run was the 12th of the season for Carroll. The 25-year-old outfielder is hitting .282/.373/.552 with 43 runs scored, 34 RBI, and eight steals across 287 plate appearances.

Carroll put the Diamondbacks on the board with a solo homer off Eric Lauer in the third inning. He later added a base hit in the eighth. The 25-year-old outfielder is slashing an excellent .289/.380/.545 with eight homers, 38 runs scored, 29 RBI, and seven steals across 245 plate appearances.

Carroll’s first RBI triple came in the first inning, pulled down the right-field line. The second came in the sixth and split the right-center gap. Each one scored Ketel Marte. Carroll, still 25 years old, is now one of just four active players with 50 career triples according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. The other three are Mike Trout, Starling Marte, and Andrew McCutchen. It’s only a matter of time until he’s the sole active leader. Carroll is off to the best offensive start of his career, sporting career-bests in BB percentage, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. The only nitpick is that he’s running less than ever, but it’s worth remembering he significantly picked up his stolen-base pace in the second half last year. Either way, he’s rewarding fantasy managers who used an early-round selection on him.
