Giants’ manager Tony Vitello told reporters on Friday that Marcelo Mayer is dealing with a bone bruise on his right foot.

It’s an injury that also bothered him while Mayer was doing his rehab at Triple-A Sacramento and isn’t expected to keep him shelved for long. He’ll rest for the remainder of the weekend before being evaluated when the Giants return home next week.

Mariners’ manager Dan Wilson confirmed Friday that Bryan Woo’s next scheduled start will be pushed back.

Woo had been scheduled to start in Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs, but Bryce Miller will move up a day to take that assignment instead. As of now, it sounds like Woo will work back into the rotation at some point next week, but it’s also possible that the shoulder soreness that he’s experiencing could ultimately land him on the injured list. Fantasy managers should be sure to have a contingency plan in place for next week.

Cubs optioned RHP Javier Assad to Triple-A Iowa.

With Daniel Palencia (elbow) returning from the injured list on Friday, the Cubs needed to free up a roster spot and once again Assad became a luxury that they couldn’t afford. David Peterson will take over the spot in the Cubs’ rotation that was vacated by the injury to Edward Cabrera.

Cubs activated RHP Daniel Palencia from the 60-day injured list.

At long last, the Cubs’ closer has returned. Palencia has been sidelined since mid-June due to an elbow issue. He returns to a 2.70 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 19/6 K/BB ratio over 16 2/3 innings through his first 19 appearances on the season. He should jump right back in as the Cubs’ primary closer.

Cubs designated INF Owen Miller for assignment.

The Cubs needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the return of Daniel Palencia on Friday and unfortunately for Miller he was the odd man out. It’s possible that the 29-year-old infielder could attract interest on waivers.

Mariners transferred RHP Matt Brash to the 60-day injured list.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for Brash, who is finally nearing a return from a lat strain that has had him shelved since early June, this was done simply as a procedural move to free up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster for Carlos Vargas to join the bullpen on Friday.

Mariners optioned RHP Nick Davila to Triple-A Tacoma.

With Carlos Vargas set to join the Mariners’ bullpen on Friday, someone needed to get sent out to create a spot and unfortunately Davila drew the short straw this time. The 27-year-old righty holds a 4.10 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and a 13/11 K/BB ratio over 26 1/3 innings in 23 appearances with the M’s this season.

The 26-year-old right-hander has been sidelined since spring training due to a right lat strain and is finally ready to contribute to the Mariners’ bullpen. Nick Davila was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move to clear a spot on the club’s active roster.

Jake Mangum is not in the Pirates’ starting lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Dodgers.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 30-year-old outfielder. Bryan Reynolds will cover left field in his place while Brandon Lowe functions as the team’s designated hitter against Dodgers’ right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Jacob Misiorowski shut out the Braves for six innings in the Brewers’ 2-1 win Friday.

Misiorowski didn’t have his absolute best stuff today, averaging a mere 100.1 mph with his fastball, and recorded just six strikeouts for the second straight start. Still, he moved to 13-5 with a 1.68 ERA with his seventh scoreless start of the year. Unless the Brewers adjust their six-man rotation and move him up to Thursday against the Mets, he’ll face the Rangers at home next Friday.
