Jung Hoo Lee (elbow) returns to Tuesday’s lineup

Four at-bats and four line drives from Encarnacion-Strand, with three of them leaving his bat at 103-106 mph. He also homered and knocked in three on Tuesday, and he’s now up to 27 RBI in 26 starts and five pinch-hit appearances for the Orioles. That he’s been in and out of the lineup makes him a tough play in mixed leagues, but his play this series figures to ensure that he stays in the lineup this weekend for a series against the A’s in Sacramento that offers big-time scoring potential.

Bradish allowed only a Nolan Gorman solo homer through four before giving up two singles, two walks and two doubles in the fifth. None of the hits were particularly impressive — the two that were hard-hit were both grounders — but those free passes really hurt. It’s the first time this season Bradish has allowed more than five runs, and his ERA crept back over 4.00 for the first time since mid-June. He’s still a reasonable bet in mixed leagues for now, but some late-season fatigue is possible in his first full year back from Tommy John.

It’s Kittredge’s first save since Aug. 11, as he blew his previous chance on Aug. 15. It’s possible he’ll wind up with more saves, but with Yennier Cano also in the mix and Félix Bautista potentially returning next month, his value is pretty limited right now.

McGreevy survived a five-run first and a two-run second to finish up with three solid innings and give the Cardinals a chance to get back into the game, which they did before eventually losing 8-7. It’s the first time in five starts this month that the Cardinals lost with McGreevy on the mound. He’ll take a season-high 3.86 ERA into next week’s start against the Dodgers.

This one wasn’t nearly as bad as Sunday’s six-run massacre, but it still hurts some. O’Brien gave up a leadoff single to Samuel Basallo on a grounder towards third that would have been handled if the infield hadn’t been shifted over and then a go-ahead double to Christian Encarnacion-Strand before retiring the next three batters to keep it a one-run game. The Cardinals, though, couldn’t pick him up. It’s O’Brien’s sixth loss to go along with five blown saves. Still, he was pitching so well in the month prior to Sunday’s outing that his closer’s role should be safe for now.

Holliday is batting .178/.227/.267 this month and still playing mediocre-at-best defense at second base (though he did make a really nice play in the ninth tonight). Any chance of him being sent down to Triple-A to make room for Blaze Alexander on the roster likely disappeared with Tyler O’Neill going on the IL, but he’s probably more deserving of losing playing time to Alexander than either Coby Mayo or Christian Encarnacion-Strand is right now.

The third hit was a bunt that was popped up but wound up as a single anyway. Torres started in left field tonight after being held out of the lineup the previous three games. It seemed like he might be the favorite to start at second base against righties with Masyn Winn out and JJ Wetherholt sliding to short, for José Fermin has gotten the nod there the last two days. Torres is batting .268 with a .340 OBP this month. However, he hasn’t had an extra-base hit since doubling July 27 against the Cubs.

Gasser was thrust into action after Dustin May was struck by a line drive on the first pitch of the game and forced to exit. From there, he was stellar while pitching with a big lead from the second inning onward. The Mets briefly challenged in the fourth, but Gasser got a huge strikeout from A.J. Ewing before Francisco Lindor could come up with a chance to claw them back into this game. He found a tick more velocity on his fastball and that helped it to force seven of his 10 total swings-and-misses. We didn’t have a clear indication that he was out of the Brewers’ rotation, but more so that he and Shane Drohan were somewhat competing for the final spot as they shifted back to a five-man staff while also having fluid roles in the short term. A strong showing here may have earned Gasser another turn or two as a starter. Or, Milwaukee may have no choice depending on May’s health status.

Turang broke this game wide open with a three-run home run off Mets’ starter Robert Stock in the fourth inning to give the Brewers a commanding 7-0 lead. His 78 RBI lead the team and his 17 home runs are second most as he’s enjoyed an unlikely power surge.

While Ewing’s bat has been ice cold lately – .507 OPS over his last 30 games – he’s finally turned the corner as a base stealer. Two more here give him 13 since July 1st and he’s only been caught one time over that span.
