Joe Ryan allowed eight hits and four runs with zero walks and four strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Royals on Wednesday.

Yikes. Ryan followed up his stinker against the Guardians last week with another tough start after being pushed back with arm fatigue. This one wasn’t as bad as that eight run, six homer implosion, but still poor against a lackluster Royals lineup that was missing Bobby Witt Jr. They scored in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings and made plenty of hard contact on the way. In all, Ryan allowed 11 hard-hit balls and this rough patch is the last thing the Twins need as they try to fight for a Wild Card spot. His velocity was in line with his season averages though, so hopefully this is not a health issue. He’ll look to right the ship in a rematch against these same Royals next time out that will begin a two-start week where Ryan will also face the Brewers.

He looked fine from a velocity standpoint, averaging 94 mph on his four-seam fastball, while coaxing 12 swinging strikes in the abbreviated outing. He’s probably going to be on a pitch count again when he faces the Guardians on Sunday, but he still offers enough strikeout upside to be a worthwhile fantasy option in that matchup.

Twins activated RHP Joe Ryan (glute) from the 15-day injured list.

Ryan has been on the injured list for about a month, but the Twins are watching their playoff hopes slip away, so they will bring their ace back after one 42-pitch rehab start. In that start, Ryan’s velocity was down a couple of ticks, averaging just 91 mph on his four-seam fastball, but it’s also unlikely he was really letting it fly. He should be limited to about 60 pitches in this game, so we’d still probably sit him on fantasy benches, but you can roll the dice if you’re hoping for a two-start week.

The expectation now is that the 30-year-old hurler will be cleared to rejoin the Twins’ rotation this week. Ryan threw just 42 pitches in a minor league rehab game at Triple-A St. Paul this week, so he may have a pitch count limitation in his first start back, but it sure sounds like his next start will be with the Twins.

Ryan, who threw 42 pitches during a minor league rehab start for Triple-A St. Paul earlier this week, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. MLB.com’s Matthew Leach notes that Minnesota’s pitchers typically throw a bullpen session two days before their next start and Monday is an off-day in the minors. He’s been out with a glute strain since early August and would likely be on a strict pitch count in his return. There should be a definitive update on Ryan’s next steps at some point this weekend, but it certainly sounds like he could get the ball on Monday at Comerica Park. The club hasn’t announced their rotation plans for the series. Connor Prielipp would be in line to start if Ryan doesn’t come off the shelf.

It wouldn’t be surprising if he made one additional rehab start to continue building up his pitch count and stamina before returning to Minnesota’s rotation.

We may be looking at a minimum stay on the IL for Ryan, but he’ll need to progress to a mound at some point this week.

As anticipated, Ryan lands on the injured list with the glute strain that he suffered his last time out. The Twins are hopeful that he’ll only need to miss a couple of weeks before rejoining the rotation. Zebby Matthews was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move on Friday to take his place for the time being.

He hasn’t offered much from a batting average standpoint, but Crews continues to show a little bit of the power/speed combo skillset that made him such a coveted fantasy prospect just a few years ago.

The dynamic 27-year-old outfielder has already notched his fourth 20-homer, 20-steal campaign in the last five seasons and will establish a new career-high mark in the stolen base department on his next theft.

He’s converted 34 of 36 save opportunities and has 113 strikeouts across 61 1/3 innings. He’s the best closer in the fantasy landscape and it might be a while before anyone else even enters the conversation.

He gave up some loud contact, including six batted balls with exit velocities over 99 mph, but they didn’t come back to burn him. It was completely justifiable to question whether the 33-year-old veteran starter would make any sort of fantasy impact down the home stretch after such a lengthy layoff, but he seems to have answered those concerns with a strong effort right out of the gate. He’s in line for an extremely favorable matchup against the rebuilding Giants to wrap up a two-start week on Sunday.
