Report: Tigers calling up prospect OF Max Clark

Baseball America’s Emily Waldon reports that the Tigers are calling up prospect OF Max Clark.

Clark, who is the 13th-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, is hitting .277/.368/.427 in 89 games at Triple-A this season with 10 home runs and 21 steals. He has been heating up in July, slashing .338/.466/.620. On the season, Clark has just a 37.7 percent hard-hit rate in Triple-A, so there may not be tons of power in the profile immediately, but he has tremendous plate discipline, great contact skills, and can run. Clark could be a solid source of batting average and steals this season.

Max Clark is not in the Tigers’ starting lineup for Saturday’s divisional showdown against the Guardians.

Clark has been a fixture in the Tigers’ lineup in center field since arriving from Triple-A Toledo, but he’ll get a breather in this one after playing in both halves of Friday’s doubleheader and with tough left-hander Parker Messick toeing the slab for the Guardians. The 21-year-old has impressed in his first exposure to big league pitching, slashing .265/.331/.434 with a pair of homers, 16 RBI and two stolen bases in his first 126 plate appearances. Zach McKinstry will start in his place in center field and bat eighth for the Tigers.

Max Clark turned in a second straight three-hit game and knocked in two in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader versus the Guardians.

Clark also was credited with a big sliding catch in left field in the seventh. It actually looked like he trapped the ball, but it was declared an out on the field and the call stood on replay. Clark is up to .275/.342/.450 with 16 RBI through 31 big-league games. Except for a drop in his walk rate, that’s hardly much different than his .276/.368/.434 line from Triple-A.

Max Clark went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored, one RBI, and two walks in a wild 11-6 win over the Twins in 12 innings.

Clark was everywhere in this game. His first two doubles helped to set up rallies in the early innings and his third was huge in the moment, giving his Tigers the lead in the 11th before their bullpen made them win it in the 12th. Nevertheless, this one game brought his batting average up from .238 to .257 and his OPS from .697 to .766 as he continues to find his footing in the big leagues.

Max Clark tripled in the Tigers’ only run and walked Friday against the Dodgers.

Clark took a 99-mph fastball on the outer-third from Tarik Skubal and slapped it 105-mph the other way for the triple. It’s still very early, but he’s hit an impressive .286/.375/.571 in 32 plate appearances in lefty-lefty matchups. Unfortunately, he’s at just .226/.273/.339 in 67 plate appearances against righties.

Max Clark went 0-for-3 in a loss to the Rays on Tuesday.

After a torrid start to his MLB career in two games in Sacramento, Clark has found the going a little tough. In August, he’s gone 18-for-84 (.214) with two home runs, nine runs scored, 11 RBI, and a 19/5 K/BB ratio. He also has just one stolen base. The future is still bright for Clark, but he doesn’t have tons of fantasy value right now while hitting at the bottom of the lineup for a mediocre offense.

Clark’s home run was his second. He hit a two-run shot off Ian Seymour in the fifth inning. Clark was 9-for-49 (.184) with no home runs and four RBI over his last 14 games entering play Tuesday. He’s hitting .247 with a .704 OPS and 12 RBI in the first 23 games of his career.

Clark had started 13 straight games, including the last three against southpaws. The Tigers, though, are sitting him versus Anthony Kay today, which gives Corey Julks a start in the outfield.

Max Clark went 0-for-4 with an RBI in a win over the Giants on Sunday.

Clark got off to a tremendous start to his MLB career during his first two games in Sacramento. In the seven games since, he has gone 6-for-28 (.214) with four RBI, one extra-base hit, and an 11/3 K/BB ratio. He also has yet to attempt a stolen base in the majors despite being a stolen base threat in the minor leagues. Overall, it’s been a solid enough early stretch for Clark, but the lack of stolen bases and inconsistent power production may keep his ceiling in check from a redraft fantasy perspective.

Max Clark went 2-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI against the Giants on Saturday.

Clark’s first hit was a fly ball to left field that left his bat at 82.9 mph in the second inning. Even with the bases-loaded and only one out, the Tigers didn’t score. In the seventh inning, Clark roped a fly ball to centerfield and wound up on third easily with his speed. The 21-year-old outfielder is far from a finished product, but Clark has reached base safely in all eight major league games he’s played so far. He also made a great catch on a sharp fly ball off the bat of Drew Gilbert in the second inning. Clark is hitting .333 with a .966 OPS and six RBI so far.

Max Clark is hitting seventh on Saturday against the Giants.

Clark has gotten off to an extremely encouraging start at the highest level, hitting .321 (9-for-28) with one homer and four RBI through seven games since being called up from Triple-A Toledo last week. The Tigers have shown zero indication that they’re considering moving their top positional prospect towards the top of the order, which limits his counting stats upside for the final two months. He should provide enough of a batting average boost, in addition to some stolen bases, to be worthy of a roster spot in deeper fantasy leagues.

George Springer is not in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s tilt against the Royals.

It’s the second time in four days that Springer has been held out of action, so it’s possible that he’s battling some sort of minor injury. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will function as the team’s designated hitter while Sean Keys starts at first base and will bat sixth against Royals’ right-hander Randy Dobnak on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City.

Hurter had been sidelined since mid-May due to lumbar spine inflammation. Before landing on the injured list, the 28-year-old southpaw had posted a strong 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and an 18/12 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings. He should provide a nice boost to an overworked and struggling Tigers’ bullpen.

Sears did a nice job in his first MLB start against the Guardians on Friday, allowing just one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. With Brant Hurter returning from the injured list on Sunday though, he gets squeezed off of the club’s active roster. It’s possible that we’ll see him return before the season comes to a close.
