Jazz Chisholm Jr. (leg) sits Friday vs. Cubs

Holmes gave up five hits, walked two and struck out eight. He improved to 6-6 with the win. Holmes dominated the Brewers while the Cubs scored nine runs while he was still in the game, leading to an easy victory. Holmes allowed four runs in his first start with the Cubs, but has since allowed only one earned in 25 innings (0.36 ERA) over his last four starts. He has a 2.09 ERA this year. Holmes is lined up to face the Marlins on the road this weekend.

Jeffers now has 12 home runs on the season. He hit a three-run shot off Jackson Jobe in the fifth inning and added a solo shot off Tigers reliever Yilber Diaz in the seventh inning. Jeffers was hitting .222 with no home runs and six RBI in 24 games in August entering play Monday, but finished the month on a high note. He’s hitting .275 with an .870 OPS and 46 this year.

Clemens’ home run was his 23rd of the season. He hit a solo shot off Jackson Jobe in the fourth inning. Clemens is 18-for-65 (.276) with four home runs and 16 RBI in his last 18 games. He’s hitting .238 with a .760 OPS and 69 RBI this year.

Jobe gave up six hits, walked two and struck out four. He fell to 1-2 in five starts with the loss. Jobe was victimized by two home runs, allowing a solo shot to Kody Clemens in the fourth inning and a three-run shot to Ryan Jeffers in the fifth inning. Jobe has only allowed four home runs in 23 1/3 innings, but more concerning is his 4.63 ERA and 19 strikeouts. He’s lined up to face the Guardians on the road on Saturday.

Bradley gave up four hits, walked three and struck out nine. He improved to 10-6 with the win. Bradley had a 5.40 ERA in five August starts entering play Monday, but finished the month strong. He dominated the Tigers in what was ultimately a lopsided victory for the Twins. Bradley has a 3.85 ERA. He’s lined up to face the White Sox on the road on Sunday.

Stowers’ two-run single in the fourth inning gave the Marlins a 3-0 lead, though Florida would eventually lose 6-3 to the Nationals. Stowers returned from a hamstring injury last week and is 6-for-21 (.285) with four RBI in seven games since. He’s hitting .245 with a .788 OPS and 56 RBI this year.

Lile now has 20 home runs on the season. He hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning and hit another two-run shot in the seventh inning. Lile finished August with seven home runs and 26 RBI in 29 games. He’s hitting .257 with a .752 OPS and 80 RBI this year.

Story’s big double to bring the Red Sox within one run in the eighth was probably an out in 29 parks, but it made it off the Green Monster in Fenway. The game-ending single with the bases loaded was a product of better contact, traveling to the gap at 105.2 mph, and would have been a double normally. Story was largely unimpressive on his rehab assignment, but he’s managed two doubles and two singles in two games since returning.

After entering the fifth with a 3-2 lead, Tolle loaded the bases with no outs on a HBP, a walk and a bunt single versus the bottom-third of the lineup. Randy Arozarena then drilled a game-tying single. At that point, Tolle stepped it up, throwing several of his hardest pitches of the game to strike out two and get Cal Raleigh to fly out on a game-high 98.4-mph fastball to end the threat. Afterwards, Tolle clearly should have been told, “great job, hit the showers, kid.” But the Red Sox brought him back out to give up one more run. The one fastball he threw in the sixth checked in at 95.5 mph. It’s the first time in seven starts that Tolle has allowed more than three runs. He remained 8-6 with a 3.23 ERA. He’ll likely face the Orioles on Sunday.

Interim manager Chad Tracy made what we would argue was a bad call after getting Chapman up with the Red Sox down 8-7 in the eighth, only to stick with Alec Gamboa in the top of the ninth. That was especially the case after Gamboa gave up a leadoff triple. Gamboa, though, escaped to keep the deficit at one before the offense came back and tied the game, and Chapman stranded the automatic runner in the 10th, after which the Red Sox won in the bottom of the inning.
