Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) is optimistic that he’ll be ready to make his season debut in September.

Schwellenbach has been on the shelf recovering from elbow issues for more than a calendar year at this juncture. However, he’s still optimistic that he’ll be ready to return before the season concludes. The 26-year-old told reporters on Friday that he has a couple bullpen sessions left before progressing to facing hitters. He should be cleared for minor league rehab starts at some point in mid-to-late August. He’ll be racing the clock to make it back to Atlanta and it seems highly unlikely that he’ll offer any fantasy relevance this season.

Yikes. Schwellenbach didn’t require surgery at the time of the fracture, but he did undergo a procedure to remove bone spurs this spring, He hasn’t pitched in 14 months since the original injury, and his status for 2027 seems like it’s in real doubt at this point.

This looked to be the likely scenario as he was placed on the 60-day IL last week. The surgery, per Weiss, removed bone spurs from Schwellenbach’s elbow. Fantasy managers should probably not bother spending real draft capital on Schwellenbach this year given his uncertain return date. It’s a bummer for the Braves after Schwellenbach posted a 3.23 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 235/41 K/BB ratio over the last two seasons before fracturing his elbow last June.

Ouch. That’s never the news that you want to hear to open spring training. The last update that we got from Braves’ president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos back in November was that Schwellenbach was pain-free. The Braves are hopeful that he’s just dealing with bone spurs, but it’s going to cost him the first two months of the season at a minimum. It’s a tough early break for the Braves and for fantasy managers who may have invested in Schwellenbach in early drafts.

Then again, while the Mariners haven’t used him three straight days this year, they did do it once last September; it’s something they’d only consider when they’re as desperate as they are right now.
