Parker Messick strikes out six in no-decision

The 25-year-old All-Star southpaw struck out six batters on the afternoon and did not allow a base on balls. The lone tally against him came in the fifth inning as Chandler Simpson singled, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on a bunt single by Cedric Mullins. Unfortunately, that was enough to do him in. Messick generated nine swings and misses on 94 pitches on the day — seven of those on his heater — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll bring an impressive 2.59 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and a 122/36 K/BB ratio (125 1/3 innings) into Saturday’s tilt against the Diamondbacks

Messick struck out six and didn’t walk a batter while throwing 67 percent of his pitches for strikes but posting just a nine percent swinging strike rate. The left-hander pounded the zone with his fastballs, but his changeup failed to land in the zone or get many chases. Still, he was able to prevent much damage and probably could have gotten through six innings but was pulled with a runner on when he was at just 88 pitches. He’ll get a stiff test on Sunday against a Rays team that refuses to strike out.

Parker Messick will get some extra rest after throwing a scoreless second inning in the All-Star Game. He’ll presumably face the Twins or Monday or Tuesday, with Slade Cecconi starting the other game.

Messick also issued four walks on the evening while striking out one. He carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning where Heriberto Hernández tagged him for a solo home run. That would be the only hit that he would allow. He generated eight swings and misses on 91 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 23 percent. The 25-year-old southpaw wraps up a brilliant first half with an 8-5 record, 2.73 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 110/36 K/BB ratio over 112 innings through his first 19 starts.

The White Sox put a run on the board in the first inning on a walk and a double. Messick then stranded two runners in the second and escaped a bases-loaded situation in the fourth before completing five innings with the one run allowed. He struck out three. The 25-year-old left-hander will take a 2.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 109/32 K/BB ratio across 106 innings into a start against the Marlins in Miami on Friday.

Messick gave up eight hits, walked none and struck out five. He fell to 7-5 with the loss. Messick was off to an excellent start first two months of the season, but has now allowed four runs in two of his last four starts. His ERA is 2.85 and his xFIP is 3.26, so the skills have certainly been there. Messick is lined up to face the White Sox at home this weekend.

Messick gave up three hits, walked one and struck out 10. He fell to 7-4 with the loss. Messick was excellent against the White Sox on Tuesday. A Randal Grichuk double and Colson Montgomery single led to a run in the fourth inning and Miguel Vargas hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, but otherwise Messick kept Chicago off the scoreboard. He has a 2.67 ERA and 3.29 xFIP. Messick is lined up to face the Rangers at home next week.

When Messick averaged 94.8 mph with his fastball last week against the Yankees, that represented a new high for him as a major leaguer. Today, though, he blew that away, coming in at 95.9 mph with his 28 heaters. His slider was also up 2.7 mph from his season norm and his changeup was 1.9 mph better. Of course, that he was getting to pitch on seven days’ rest might have had a little something to do with it. Messick is already plenty good as is, but if this velocity boost sticks around, we might be looking at a Cy Young contender. He’ll take a 7-3 record and a 2.70 ERA into his start Tuesday against the White Sox.

Messick allowed three runs after a flyball that dropped for a single, a bunt single and a Jazz Chisholm Jr. triple in the second. The remaining runs came in the sixth. Trent Grisham tripled and scored on a sac fly that was the second out of the inning. Messick then walked Chisholm and was pulled, only to see Chisholm come around to score off Matt Festa. It’s Messick’s second straight loss after a 6-1 start, but it’s not like he’s being knocked around. He’ll face the Brewers in Milwaukee next week, but he’s a solid enough play anyway.

Messick struck out four batters in the ballgame while issuing one free pass. He kept the Rangers off the board through the first five frames but ran into a buzzsaw in the sixth when he surrendered a solo homer to Kyle Higashioka and a two-run blast to Corey Seager. Messick generated 12 swings and misses on 85 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 29 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he brings a brilliant 2.40 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 78/22 K/BB ratio (75 innings) into a tough matchup against the Yankees on Wednesday.
