Cubs sent RHP Jake Woodford outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Woodford was designated for assignment on Tuesday to make room on the Cubs’ 40-man roster for all of their deadline acquisitions. He passed through waivers unclaimed though and it sounds like he’ll continue to serve as extra pitching depth at Triple-A Iowa.

Woodford was with the Rays for just one day. The 29-year-old now will hit the waiver wire, and with only three days left in the season, it’s hard to imagine there will be a claim. He’ll be a free agent at the end of the year.

Woodford, who was signed to a minor league deal this month, will be pitching for his third team this year, assuming that he gets into a game. He had a 7.18 ERA in 26 1/3 innings for the Brewers and Cubs. At this point, it’s between him and Hunter Feduccia (Rays and Dodgers) for the player with the best chance of getting a World Series ring this year (assuming the World Series winner is feeling generous).

Woodford heads to Tampa Bay as additional organizational depth after being removed from Chicago’s bullpen last week. He’s posted a bloated 7.18 ERA across 26 1/3 innings in the majors this season.

  • CHC Relief Pitcher #41
Woodford rejoins Chicago’s relief mix after spending a couple weeks back in the minors. The 29-year-old journeyman allowed three runs over two innings during his lone relief appearance for the Cubs earlier this month. He’ll operate in low-leverage spots as a multi-inning reliever.

Woodford went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last weekend. The 29-year-old righty allowed three runs over two innings during his lone relief appearance for the Cubs. He’s posted an inflated 7.46 ERA across 25 1/3 innings over 17 appearances between the Cubs and Brewers this season.

Woodford opted out of his deal with the Brewers earlier in the month, and the 29-year-old finds an MLB deal not long after. He’ll get a chance to help the Cubs’ pitching staff as a potential multi-inning bullpen option in the middle frames.

Woodford is back with Milwaukee after spending a few hours on the open market. The well-traveled 29-year-old posted a serviceable 6.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 20/7 K/BB ratio across 23 1/3 innings with the Brewers before being designated for assignment last Friday.

Woodford hits the free agent pool after passing through waivers unclaimed following his removal from Milwaukee’s roster mix. The 29-year-old journeyman posted an underwhelming 6.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 20/7 K/BB ratio across 23 1/3 innings during his time with the Brewers. He should be able to latch on somewhere else as emergency relief depth.

The Brewers needed to free up a spot on their roster on Friday and unfortunately for the 29-year-old hurler, he wound up on the outside looking in. Woodford made 16 appearances during his time with the Brewers, posting a disappointing 6.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and a 20/7 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings. While good pitching depth is hard to come by, there’s a chance that he could slide through waivers unclaimed.

Robert Gasser will start Game 3 of the NLCS against the Dodgers

Gasser threw four innings of one-run ball in Game 4 of the NL Division Series in the win over the Padres. The left-hander had a 3.87 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 103/35 K/BB ratio in 109 1/3 innings for the Brewers this season, and he has a 1.73 ERA in his last seven games (six starts). It’s unlikely that the Brewers let him pitch deep into this game, but they are up 2-0 in the series, so they may want to give their bullpen some rest if they see the chance to.

José Ramírez went 3-for-5 with an RBI to propel the Guardians to a 7-3 win over the Rays in Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday.

Ramírez remained sizzling-hot as the Guardians erased an early deficit to rally for a comeback victory in the opener of a best-of-seven series, scoring all seven of their runs in the sixth inning or later. The 34-year-old franchise cornerstone capped off a sublime three-hit performance by extending Cleveland’s lead with a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning. He’s gone 8-for-17 with two homers and eight RBI over his last four postseason games. The two teams will square off again at Tropicana Field in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

Junior Caminero delivered an RBI single in a loss to the Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday.

Caminero slapped an RBI single into left field to give Tampa Bay an early advantage, but they were unable to hang on in the opener of a best-of-seven series. The big concern for the Rays moving forward is Caminero’s health after he somehow managed to remain in the contest following a massive collision with teammate Jonny DeLuca down the left-field line in the ninth inning. It looked like DeLuca got the worst of it, but the primary point of contact was Caminero’s left shoulder and ribcage. Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters afterwards that he got the wind knocked out of him and seems to be completely fine. All signs point to Caminero being ready for Tuesday’s Game 2 showdown at Tropicana Field.

Chase DeLauter went 3-for-4 with a solo homer in a win over the Rays in Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday.

DeLauter spearheaded Cleveland’s relentless offensive effort in this one as he tallied three hits, including a sixth-inning solo shot off Rays ace Drew Rasmussen. His most consequential knock was an eighth-inning double that set up a go-ahead two-run single by ensuing batter Nathaniel Lowe. He also drew a walk, reaching base safely in three of his five plate appearances. The 25-year-old rookie has fit perfectly with franchise cornerstone José Ramírez in the heart of Cleveland’s lineup, hitting .333 (8-for-24) with one homer and three RBI this postseason.

Foster Griffin gave up two runs over four innings against the Rays in Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday.

The Rays jumped all over Griffin in the opening frame as Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca delivered RBI singles. He managed to settle in afterwards, retiring nine of the final 10 hitters he faced after the first inning. He finished with three strikeouts and didn’t hand out a free pass. He was long gone from the contest by the time Cleveland’s offense came to life in the late innings to pull off a Game 1 win.

Drew Rasmussen allowed two runs over six innings against the Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday.

Rasmussen received an early two-run cushion and carried a shutout into the sixth inning before Guardians rookie Chase DeLauter connected for a solo homer. He was pulled after surrendering a game-tying blast to light-hitting backstop Patrick Bailey on his 91st and final pitch of the contest to lead off the seventh. Rasmussen finished with seven strikeouts and didn’t issue a walk. He’s in line to take the ball again for a potential Game 5 of the best-of-seven series. This felt like a missed opportunity for the Rays, who carried a lead into the late innings with their ace on the mound and a fully-rested bullpen before watching things unravel.

William Contreras went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBI, powering the Brewers to a 7-4 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS on Monday.

Contreras delivered an RBI single in the opening frame before connecting on a center-cut fastball from Dodgers lefty reliever Kris Bubic, sending a majestic 436-foot blast to left-center field to tie the ballgame in the fifth inning. It was his third round-tripper of the playoffs and fifth career postseason homer, which ties him with teammate Jackson Chourio for Milwaukee’s franchise record. He put the Brewers ahead with a sixth-inning single to left field off hard-throwing righty Brock Stewart before being walked on four pitches his next time up. The power-hitting 28-year-old backstop reached base safely in four of his five plate appearances to help give Milwaukee a commanding 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven NLCS. The series heads to Los Angeles with Game 3 on Wednesday evening.

Shohei Ohtani went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in a loss to the Brewers in Game 2 of the NLCS on Monday.

There’s no sugarcoating Ohtani’s struggles at the plate, where he has looked uncomfortable and, at times, completely lost. The 32-year-old generational talent is hitting just .150 (3-for-20) with seven strikeouts this postseason. His power outage has extended well beyond October, as he went 11-for-70 (.157) with 29 strikeouts over his final 18 regular-season games since his last home run on August 18. At this point, it’s fair to wonder whether top prospect Josue De Paula deserves a look in hopes of providing an unexpected spark, particularly with Los Angeles struggling to generate any over-the-fence pop this postseason. The Dodgers are facing a 2-0 deficit as the best-of-seven series heads to California for Game 3 on Wednesday.

Brice Turang went 2-for-3 with an RBI in a win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS on Monday.

Turang, who homered during Sunday’s series-opening win, extended Milwaukee’s lead with an RBI single to right-center field off hard-throwing reliever Edgardo Henriquez in the eighth inning. He reached base safely in four of his five plate appearances to help set the table for middle-of-the-order force William Contreras.

Aaron Ashby recorded a five out save as the Brewers defeated the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS on Monday.

Ashby was summoned to record the final two outs of the eighth inning before coming back out to protect a three-run advantage in the ninth. He got Shohei Ohtani and Will Smith to fly out before punching out pinch-hitter Miguel Rojas to end it. Milwaukee’s bullpen has been absolutely sensational through the first two games of the NLCS, reeling off 9 2/3 consecutive scoreless frames during that span.
