Luis Robert Jr. absent from Mets’ lineup on Friday

Lukes knocked a base hit in the third inning and reached with another hit in the ninth before coming through for Toronto in a big spot in the 11th. With the game tied, he took Chase Shugart deep for a two-run homer to put the Blue Jays ahead with what would be the game-winning runs. The 32-year-old outfielder is up to six homers while hitting .268/.322/.375 across 298 plate appearances.

Guerrero returned to the lineup and put the Blue Jays on the board right away, taking Aaron Nola deep for a solo homer in the first inning. It was his first home run since July 11 and just his seventh of the season. The 27-year-old first baseman is hitting .262/.341/.358 with 58 runs scored, 46 RBI, and seven steals across 461 plate appearances.

Harper tied the game in the sixth inning, going back-to-back with Trea Turner for a solo homer off Max Scherzer. It was Harper’s third homer this month and 25th of the season to go with 72 runs scored, 71 RBI, and six steals while hitting .257/.365/.504 across 499 plate appearances.

The Phillies had been shut out through five innings until Turner put the team on the board with a solo homer off Max Scherzer with one out in the sixth. The home run was Turner’s 17th of the season. He later scored a run in the 10th inning as the starting runner on second. The 33-year-old shortstop is hitting .251/.298/.405 with 80 runs scored, 47 RBI, and 17 steals across 510 plate appearances.

Varland took the mound in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied, tasked with taking the game to extra innings. He tossed a clean frame, striking out one to go to the tenth. Varland returned for the bottom of the tenth with a one-run lead and allowed the starting runner on second to score on a sacrifice fly before ending the frame. The Blue Jays would take a two-run lead in the 11th, putting Varland in line for the win as Lazaro Estrada closed it out.

Scherzer had been cruising in this one, holding the Phillies scoreless through five frames. They’d finally get to him in the sixth, with Trea Turner and Bryce Harper going back-to-back for a pair of solo homers. Scherzer’s day would be done with one out in the inning, but not before he struck out his fourth batter, putting him 10th on the MLB All-Time strikeout list with 3,516. The 42-year-old right-hander will take on the Red Sox in Toronto on Thursday.

While both runs were unearned, it’s worth noting that one of the errors that created a run was made by Bradish. So unearned, but deserved. The right-hander did pitch well outside of a two-run second where the defense faltered, and he allowed just five hits with no walks and struck out four. Unfortunately, his defense — and he himself — did falter, and the offense gave up just one single run of support. Bradish will try to continue to lower his 3.61 ERA in a scheduled start against the Rays on Friday.

Over his five innings, DeGrom struck out nine while generating 13 swings and misses. The only blemish was a solo homer by Jackson Holliday in the first inning, and outside of that the 38-year-old was outstanding. It was the first start since deGrom vetoed a trade to Atlanta, and it’s one that should make the Rangers happy he wanted to stay. He has a very friendly matchup on paper scheduled for Thursday against the Angels.
