Joe Ryan (glute) threw on flat ground on Monday.

Ryan was placed on the injured list with a glute strain on Friday, so it’s good news that he’s already throwing. Of course, throwing off flat ground means he’s not pushing off in the same way he would on a mound, which would test his glute a bit more. We may be looking at a minimum stay on the IL for Ryan, but he’ll need to progress to a mound at some point this week.

The option was just something Ryan and the Twins did in January in order to avoid arbitration; Ryan gets a $100,000 buyout on top of his $6.1 million salary from last season, and now he’ll be arbitration eligible again. Coming off a season in which he had a 3.79 ERA in 27 starts, he’s probably looking at a raise to $9 million-$10 million in his final season before free agency.

Ryan let up two runs by the time he faced four hitters, but held tight from that point on. In fact, only three Rangers reached base against him after the first inning. He leaned into his knuckle-curve a bit more than usual and while he hung a handful, it also forced five swings-and-misses. A stint on the injured list played a part, but this was Ryan’s first win since July 5th and he closed the season with a 3.79 ERA, 159 strikeouts, and 31 walks over 144 2/3 innings pitched.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
Ryan departed with a 4-2 lead that wound up being blown. With any luck at all, it would have been a better night. He gave up seven hits but just three hard-hit balls, and the 376-foot homer he allowed to Jose Siri was only a home run in three of 30 ballparks. Ryan is due to face the Rangers in his final start.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
Ryan gave up a pair of homers and struck out just one in his second start back from the injured list. He also lost the previous one, and he’s now 6-10 with a 3.84 ERA overall. One wonders if he might be looking at a shutdown with the Twins all but out of the playoff hunt. He’s lined up to face the Angels next weekend.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
Ryan served up a solo homer to Detroit’s rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle in the opening frame, along with a pair of runs in the second inning. However, he managed to settle in shortly afterwards, needing just 66 pitches (46 strikes) to navigate four frames in his return from the injured list. He looked fine from a velocity standpoint, averaging 94 mph on his four-seam fastball, while coaxing 12 swinging strikes in the abbreviated outing. He’s probably going to be on a pitch count again when he faces the Guardians on Sunday, but he still offers enough strikeout upside to be a worthwhile fantasy option in that matchup.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
Ryan has been on the injured list for about a month, but the Twins are watching their playoff hopes slip away, so they will bring their ace back after one 42-pitch rehab start. In that start, Ryan’s velocity was down a couple of ticks, averaging just 91 mph on his four-seam fastball, but it’s also unlikely he was really letting it fly. He should be limited to about 60 pitches in this game, so we’d still probably sit him on fantasy benches, but you can roll the dice if you’re hoping for a two-start week.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
The expectation now is that the 30-year-old hurler will be cleared to rejoin the Twins’ rotation this week. Ryan threw just 42 pitches in a minor league rehab game at Triple-A St. Paul this week, so he may have a pitch count limitation in his first start back, but it sure sounds like his next start will be with the Twins.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
Ryan, who threw 42 pitches during a minor league rehab start for Triple-A St. Paul earlier this week, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. MLB.com’s Matthew Leach notes that Minnesota’s pitchers typically throw a bullpen session two days before their next start and Monday is an off-day in the minors. He’s been out with a glute strain since early August and would likely be on a strict pitch count in his return. There should be a definitive update on Ryan’s next steps at some point this weekend, but it certainly sounds like he could get the ball on Monday at Comerica Park. The club hasn’t announced their rotation plans for the series. Connor Prielipp would be in line to start if Ryan doesn’t come off the shelf.

Ryan’s velocity was down a couple ticks as he averaged just 91 mph on his four-seam fastball during the 42-pitch outing. He gave up a solo homer, which represented the lone baserunner against him across three frames. The 30-year-old Twins ace is working his way back from a glute strain and could potentially make his next start in the big leagues with the club fighting for a playoff spot. It wouldn’t be surprising if he made one additional rehab start to continue building up his pitch count and stamina before returning to Minnesota’s rotation.

Twins manager Derek Shelton said the plan is for Ryan to throw roughly 50 pitches over three innings. The 30-year-old upper-echelon fantasy starter figures to rejoin Minnesota’s rotation next week, assuming he’s feeling ready from a physical standpoint. He hit the injured list with a glute strain back in early August. There should be a definitive update on his return timeline coming out of Tuesday’s tune-up outing.

Tigers sent RHP Yilber Díaz outright to Triple-A Toledo.

The 26-year-old hurler was bumped from the Tigers’ 40-man roster earlier in the week. It’s the first time that he has passed through waivers unclaimed. Expect Díaz to receive an invitation to big league camp where he’ll have a shot at competing for a spot in the Tigers’ Opening Day bullpen.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mariners have hired Tanner Swanson to be their next bench coach.

Swanson has been in the Yankees’ organization, serving as their minor league catching coordinator since November of 2019. He also served as the bench coach for Great Britain during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. He’ll work with first-time skipper Jason Kanzler to try to get the Mariners back on track after a disastrous 2026 campaign.

Corbin Carroll recently underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow.

The procedure used the NanoNeedle, which was used during Tarik Skubal’s surgery in 2026 and led to a much shorter recovery timeline. The 26-year-old superstar had been scheduled to start swinging in early November, that timeline will now be delayed by an additional couple of weeks while he recovers. He should be ready to go for the start of spring training.

Zack Kelly has elected free agency.

The 31-year-old right-hander passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier in the week. Kelly did a nice job in 17 appearances for the Red Sox in 2026, registering a 3.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 14/7 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 innings. It’s possible that he could wind up securing a big league deal this winter.

Mets agreed to terms with RHP Robert Stock on a one-year contract.

Stock might receive the same treatment as Kyren Paris and Christian Cairo and get DFA’d here, with the Mets hoping he’d clear waivers. It seems likely that someone would grab him, though. Stock is 36, but his arm is about as lively as ever and he’s going to earning barely more than the major league minimum. He had a 5.93 ERA in seven starts and one relief appearances for the Mets last season.

Guardians claimed INF José Tena off waivers from the Nationals.

Tena rejoins the Guardians 15 months after being traded to the Nationals for Lane Thomas. The 25-year-old hit .222/.302/.370 with seven homers in 288 plate appearances for the Nationals last season. That was good for an 85 OPS+, which is also his career mark in 659 plate appearances since he debuted with Cleveland in 2023. There’s still additional power potential lurking here, but it’s not likely to come with enough OBP or defensive value to turn him into an especially useful player.

Nationals designated RHP Kyle Nicolas for assignment.

The move opens up a spot on the 40-man for Reiver Sanmartín. Nicolas, 27, was acquired from the Orioles in July, but he never pitched in the majors for the Nationals. He has a 4.96 ERA and a 103/66 K/BB in 105 1/3 innings as a major leaguer, most of which came with the Pirates.

    Nationals acquired LHP Reiver
Sanmartín from the Giants for RHP Robert Cranz.

Sanmartín, who was DFA’d on Monday, had a 4.22 ERA in 24 appearances for the Giants last season. The 30-year-old seems more like a quality minor league signing than someone a team should keep on a 40-man all winter, but the Nationals are optimistic about something here. They also claimed fellow reliever Braxton Roxby off waivers last week and traded for Nate Furman on Sunday, so they’ve now taken advantage of the Giants’ roster purge three times.

Giants acquired RHP Robert Cranz from the Nationals for LHP Reiver
    Sanmartín.

Cranz, 23, was the 200th overall selection in the 2024 draft, getting taken out of Oklahoma State. He stalled after a late promotion to Triple-A last season, giving up 17 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings. However, he was excellent before that, and he finished with a 76/32 K/BB in 54 innings overall. In his 26 1/3 innings in Double-A, he fanned 36 percent of the batters he faced.

Royals signed RHP Hobie Harris to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

After overcoming a forearm issue that sidelined him for the first half of the season, the 33-year-old Harris had a 2.55 ERA and a 27/16 K/BB in 24 2/3 innings for Boston’s Triple-A affiliate last season. His only major league experience came in 2023, when he had a 5.12 ERA in 19 1/3 innings for the Nationals.
