Michael Soroka tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings and got a no-decision in the Diamondbacks’ 9-0 victory over the Rockies on Monday.

Soroka missed almost two months with a left glute strain, but returned Monday with an excellent start against the Rockies. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out three. Soroka was limited to 77 pitches in this one and seems like he’ll be on a pitch count for the next few starts until he’s completely stretched out. He lowered his ERA to 2.92 this season. Soroka is lined up to face the Braves on the road this weekend.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is hopeful Michael Soroka will come off the IL as soon as his 15 days are up.

Soroka, who gave up six runs to the Reds on Saturday, was placed on the IL today due to shoulder inflammation. “He’s going to hopefully be ready on Day 16,” Lovullo said. “The plan is to get him a couple days down, get him back on the bump and miss as few days as possible.”

He’s been a savvy one-year signing by Arizona, and he’ll look to continue pitching well, with a home start against the Reds up next.

Soroka gets the ball for Monday’s series opener against the Rockies at Chase Field following a seven-week absence due to a left glute strain. Needless to say, it’s an extremely favorable matchup right away. The 29-year-old was in the midst of arguably his best season since his 2019 breakout with Atlanta, compiling a sparkling 3.07 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 79/17 K/BB ratio across 82 innings before hitting the shelf in mid-June. He should be rostered in all fantasy formats.

Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo said in an interview on the Burns and Gambo show on Saturday that Michael Soroka is expected to start on Monday against the Rockies.

Soroka has been shelved since late June due to a left glute strain. He only threw 57 pitches in his latest minor league rehab start, so it’s possible he’ll face some workload limitations in his first start back. Before landing on the injured list, Soroka had compiled a 3.07 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a 79/17 K/BB ratio over his first 82 innings of work.

Soroka struck out one and walked two while throwing 37 of his 57 pitches for strikes. Before this start, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said his “gut feel: was that Soroka would only need one rehab start, so that would potentially mean the right-hander could return on Monday to face the Rockies at home. Given that Soroka was only at 57 pitches in this game, we wouldn’t expect much more than 70 in that start against Colorado.

Once his glute feels good enough for game action, Soroka will need at least one rehab start before rejoining Arizona’s rotation.

Soroka is still dealing with a bit of soreness, so the Diamondbacks will take a cautious approach and give him a couple of extra days out. Xavier Edwards was diagnosed with left thumb and elbow discomfort after being removed from Sunday’s battle against the Nationals.

Edwards sustained the injuries when colliding with the shoulder of Jorbit Vivas as he slid into second base and Edwards attempted to place a tag on him. He’s currently undergoing further evaluation. The Marlins should have a better idea on his status once he’s fully checked out.
