Nick Sogard homered, doubled and walked Sunday as the Red Sox defeated the Giants 5-4.

The Red Sox need to free up three roster spots with Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa all due back this week, but Sogard, who has taken over as Boston’s starting second baseman, has to stick around. He has two homers, four doubles, five singles and six walks in his last six games, raising his OPS from .663 to .827.

That’s presumably why Sogard is getting the additional playing time in this case.

Sogard continues to pay off in the leadoff spot for the Red Sox, reaching four times against the Giants on Saturday. He knocked a base hit and drew two walks before delivering a game-tying double in the ninth before Boston’s walk-off win. The 28-year-old infielder is slashing .277/.392/.387 with one homer, 18 runs scored, and eight RBI across 146 plate appearances.

Jahmai Jones was scratched from the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Diamondbacks.

No word yet on the reason for the move. Jones has been replaced by Mickey Gasper at DH with Nick Sogard moving up to the leadoff spot to face Arizona lefty Mitch Bratt.

Nick Sogard went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Friday’s loss to the Pirates.

Sogard’s first RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that brought Jarren Duran home to score. In the seventh inning, Sogard would single to again bring home Duran, as he wound up being responsible for two of the four runs the Red Sox scored on the night. Sogard has enjoyed a solid week at the plate, as he’s slashing .296/.375/.370 in his last seven games.

Red Sox optioned INF/OF Romy Gonzalez to Triple-A Worcester.

The Red Sox are going to roll with Eli White and Jahmai Jones as their lefty-mashing specialists, in addition to Nick Sogard seeing regular time at second base, with Gonzalez going to the minors in the wake of their trade deadline moves. The 29-year-old infielder has hit just .185 (12-for-65) with one homer, seven RBI and one steal in 19 games this season.

Sogard got the call to fly cross country to join the Red Sox out in West Sacramento after Curtis Mead suffered a fractured wrist in his Boston debut on Monday. The 28-year-old got into 12 games earlier this season and offers some defensive versatility in a bench role.

Red Sox activated INF/OF Nick Sogard from the 10-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Worcester.

Sogard missed more than a month’s worth of action due to soreness in his right side. He had been on a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester and that’s where he’ll remain at least through the All-Star break as he continues to round back into game shape.

Sogard apparently began feeling the soreness over the weekend and then also didn’t play on Tuesday against the Orioles. He’ll be out for at least two weeks as he tries to get healthy.

Sogard is at second base and hitting fifth after coming off the bench during Friday’s series opener in Cleveland. The versatile 28-year-old has been playing through a lingering side issue recently. He’s hit a respectable .273/.368/.394 with two RBI in 11 games since coming up from Triple-A Worcester earlier this month.

The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Gordon Wittenmyer reports Eugenio Suárez and TJ Friedl cleared waivers and will remain with the Reds.

Suárez being claimed by the Diamondbacks or Mariners would have made for a fun story, but instead he’ll finish out the regular season with the Reds. Neither club was willing to pick up approximately $3 million in salary for the 35-year-old slugger.

Wood landed on the injured list on August 4th with what the team had called a mild oblique strain. However, his recovery progress has been slow, and it’s unclear if he has even begun swinging a bat. Seeing him run on the field is certainly nice, but until we see him hitting and beginning to hit high velocity, we shouldn’t expect an imminent return.

The 26-year-old was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Yankees but returned to the Cardinals in April. This season, he has moved to the bullpen full time and has a 4.54 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 57/14 K/BB ratio in 39 2/3 innings at Triple-A. He will make his MLB debut if/when he gets into a game.
