Tigers call up prospect John Peck from Triple-A

Tigers selected the contract of INF John Peck from Triple-A Toledo.

Peck receives his first shot in the majors after hitting .288/.339/.502 with 11 homers and 22 steals in 298 plate appearances in the upper minors this season. Tigers skipper A.J. Hinch told reporters Peck will get some time at shortstop with Kevin McGonigle moving over to third base more often in the coming weeks. It appears that Gleyber Torres and Javier Báez could lose playing time down the home stretch with Detroit fading from playoff contention. Peck is unlikely to offer much fantasy appeal outside of extremely deep mixed leagues and AL-only formats.

Torres has ceded a considerable amount of playing time to youngster Hao-Yu Lee recently, starting just four of Detroit’s last 12 contests at second base. He’s back at the keystone and hitting second against Blue Jays righty José Soriano in this one.

Kevin McGonigle went 1-for-3 with a two-run triple and a walk on Sunday afternoon as the Tigers wrapped up their three-game sweep of the Rockies at Comerica Park.

The 22-year-old phenom did his damage off of Gabriel Hughes in the second inning, increasing the Tigers’ early lead to 5-0. He also walked in the fourth inning and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Riley Greene. He’s having an exceptional rookie season, slashing .272/.373/.425 with 17 homers, 65 RBI, 12 stolen bases and an 89/88 K/BB ratio over 649 plate appearances.

Gleyber Torres is not in the Tigers’ starting lineup for the second consecutive day for Sunday’s series finale against the Rockies.

It’s the third time in the past four games that Torres has found himself on the bench, which could mean that he’s battling a minor injury issue. Hao-Yu Lee will start in his place at second base and will bat second for the Tigers against right-hander Gabriel Hughes.

Kevin McGonigle went 2-for-5 with his 17th home run of the season in Saturday’s comeback win over the Rockies.

McGonigle put Detroit on the scoreboard with an impressive 389-foot blast into the right-field seats off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon in the third inning. It was his third round-tripper in his last five games and his 17th big fly of the year. The 22-year-old hitting machine is the clear favorite to take home the American League Rookie of the Year Award and he’s making some real noise down the home stretch to bolster his candidacy. He’s on pace to finish as a top-five fantasy contributor at both third base and shortstop and will be an early-round selection in drafts next spring.

Kevin McGonigle went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run against the Twins on Tuesday.

McGonigle’s home run was his 16th of the season. He hit a two-run shot off Dean Kremer in the fifth inning. McGonigle hit eight home runs in 93 games in the first half of the season, but has found his power stroke in the second half with eight home runs in 47 games. He’s hitting .273 with a .792 OPS and 62 RBI. McGonigle remains in pole position as the favorite for the AL Rookie of the Year Award.

Kevin McGonigle slugged his 15th home run of the season in Monday’s win over the Twins.

McGonigle connected for his first round-tripper since August 23, launching a no-doubter to right field off Twins ace Joe Ryan in the opening frame. The 22-year-old remains the heavy favorite to take home the American League Rookie of the Year Award with less than three weeks remaining on the calendar.

Gleyber Torres is not in the Tigers’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Guardians in Cleveland.

Torres has shouldered a heavy workload for the Tigers and played in both halves of Friday’s doubleheader in addition to Saturday’s contest, so he’ll get a breather in this one. Spencer Torkelson will do the same. Hao-Yu Lee will start at second base and will bat second against Guardians’ right-hander Gavin Williams.

Gleyber Torres went 2-for-5 and scored a pair of runs on Saturday as the Tigers topped the Guardians.

Torres led off the third inning with a single off of Parker Messick and scored on an RBI knock off the bat of Riley Greene. He then started a rally with a one-out single in the seventh and raced home on Greene’s RBI double. When healthy, he has been a terrific table-setter in the Tigers’ lineup this season, slashing .270/.371/.384 with eight homers and 36 RBI in 369 plate appearances.

Hao-Yu Lee (shin) is in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Guardians.

Lee appears to have checked out fine after suffering a bruised left shin when he collided with Guardians catcher Austin Hedges while trying to score on a rundown during the nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader. The versatile 23-year-old has been on a tear at the dish since returning to the majors in mid-June, batting .295 with six homers and 28 RBI over 64 games during that span. He’s at third base with Kevin McGonigle getting a breather after playing in both games of Friday’s twin bill.

The 28-year-old never worked more than two innings during his minor league rehab assignment which means he’s likely going to pitch in relief for the Diamondbacks as they attempt to secure a playoff spot in the final two weeks of the season.

Max Scherzer improved to 3-8 on Wednesday against the Tigers, allowing one earned run on three hits over five innings pitched.

Scherzer struck out three and walked three, and the Jays went on to win 5-1. The victory was the 224th of his legendary career. While he has been blasted for seven or more runs a couple of times since August 1, he has allowed three runs or fewer in every other start. Toronto avoided being swept by Detroit with the performance and now trails the White Sox by 1.5 games for the final AL Wild Card spot. Scherzer is lined up to face the Orioles in Baltimore next time out.
