Marlins bring up Blalock for September

Blalock made two appearances in his week with the Marlins, allowing two runs in six innings.

It’s so odd seeing Garrett struggle with his control like this. He walked eight in just 4 1/3 innings over his two starts for the Marlins. Prior to his elbow surgery, he had just a 4.8 percent walk rate from 2022-24. The Marlins will surely give him another try once things improve. In the meantime, they could try Bradley Blalock or Ryan Gusto.

Blalock was acquired from the Rockies in January and was trying to win a rotation spot. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in 4 2/3 innings this spring while striking out three and walking two. The 25-year-old will begin the year in Jacksonville’s rotation.

This trade was announced earlier in the day and is now official. We can’t imagine Blalock earns a spot in the Marlins rotation.

Blalock was designated for assignment last week to make room on the 40-man roster for Michael Lorenzen. The 25-year-old posted a 9.36 ERA in 58 2/3 innings for the Rockies. It remains to be seen what role the Marlins have in mind for him, but it’s unlikely he’ll have much fantasy value in 2026.

Blalock has now allowed at least five runs in six consecutive starts. Surely he’s looking forward to the offseason and putting his 9.36 ERA behind him.

Blalock also issued a pair of walks in the contest and didn’t record a single strikeout. The 24-year-old hurler was pressed into action after Chase Dollander (knee) landed on the injured list and his return to the Rockies’ rotation did not go well. He served up three home runs in the contest — a two-run blast to Fernando Tatis Jr. in the second inning and a pair of solo shots to Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill in the third. He’ll carry a horrifying 9.00 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and a 22/20 K/BB ratio (50 innings) into Friday’s battle against the Angels.

With Chase Dollander (knee) landing on the injured list on Saturday, Blalock will get another opportunity to show what he can do at the big league level. The 24-year-old hurler sports a troublesome 8.62 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and a 22/18 K/BB ratio over 47 innings with the Rockies this season. He’ll start on Saturday evening against the Padres in San Diego.
