Joshua Báez is starting in left field against a right-hander Friday versus the Rockies.

Thank goodness we don’t get to miss out on Báez at Coors. He had sat in favor of Bryan Torres the last two times the Cardinals faced righties. Torres is still in the lineup tonight, but he’s playing second base over José Fermin.

This effectively ends his season. Báez hit .230/.278/.510 with seven homers and two stolen bases in 29 games with the Cardinals, including an electric three-homer debut at Wrigley Field. The 23-year-old will likely be in the Cardinals plans for 2027 in left field or at designated hitter. The power and speed he showcased will make him a popular fantasy sleeper even despite the sub-par batting average.

The major concern here is that any sort of oblique issue would be season-ending. Báez went 0-for-4 at the dish before being removed from the contest in the 10th inning. The 23-year-old top prospect’s all-or-nothing offensive approach has resulted in a respectable .230 batting average with seven homers, 18 RBI and two steals through 29 games. He’s also struck out 33 times in 100 at-bats. He’ll undergo further evaluation to determine whether he’ll require a trip to the injured list.
  • STL Right Fielder #18
It’s notable that Walker is absent from St. Louis’ lineup after making an early exit from Friday’s contest in the eighth inning with a possible lower-body issue. It’ll be top prospect Joshua Báez taking over in right field in his place. There should be a definitive update on his status at some point this weekend.
  • STL Left Fielder #22
The 23-year-old slugger smacked an RBI single in the third inning that gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead that they would never surrender. He then delivered an RBI double in the fifth inning and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Leo Bernal. He also doubled in the seventh inning and was once again driven in by Bernal. With his three-hit attack, Báez is now slashing .261/.313/.580 to go with seven home runs, 18 RBI and two stolen bases in his first 96 plate appearances.
  • STL Left Fielder #22
Báez’ home run was his seventh of the season. He hit a solo shot off Mason Adams in the second inning. Báez is now 8-for-21 (.380) with three home runs and six RBI over his last seven games. He’s hitting .229 with an .872 OPS and 15 RBI in his first taste of the major leagues. Báez’ tools are loud enough to put up with the strikeouts and low average.
  • STL Left Fielder #22
Báez takes a seat against Dodgers workhorse Yoshinobu Yamamoto after blasting a solo homer off lefty Justin Wrobleski during Tuesday’s blowout win in Los Angeles. The 23-year-old top prospect has struck out just over 36 percent of the time, while also homering six times, in 63 plate appearances over 17 games since being called up last month. He’s a bit of an all-or-nothing fantasy contributor at this early stage of his big-league career. He’ll probably be back in there to face lefty ace Tarik Skubal Thursday’s series finale.
  • STL Left Fielder #22
It’s the second time this week that the 23-year-old slugger has been held out of the Cardinals’ lineup. While he has shown his prodigious power with five home runs in his first 53 at-bats, he has done so while slashing a troublesome .170/.224/.491 with a 22/3 K/BB ratio over 58 plate appearances. Bryan Torres will start in his place in left field and will bat leadoff for the Cardinals against Pirates’ right-hander Braxton Ashcraft.
  • STL Left Fielder #39
The third hit was a bunt that was popped up but wound up as a single anyway. Torres started in left field tonight after being held out of the lineup the previous three games. It seemed like he might be the favorite to start at second base against righties with Masyn Winn out and JJ Wetherholt sliding to short, for José Fermin has gotten the nod there the last two days. Torres is batting .268 with a .340 OBP this month. However, he hasn’t had an extra-base hit since doubling July 27 against the Cubs.
  • STL Left Fielder #22
Baez is hitting .083 (3-for-36) with one homer, four RBI and two steals in 10 games since launching three homers in his sublime major-league debut earlier this month. He’s also struck out a whopping 16 times during that span. The 23-year-old projects as a streaky power hitter for fantasy purposes and he’s been mostly cold of late, which makes it challenging to keep him rostered in shallow mixed leagues.
  • STL Shortstop #0
It’s new news that Winn has a fracture. The Cardinals figure to play JJ Wetherholt at shortstop for now. Nolan Gorman was recalled to replace Winn, but he didn’t play any second base in the minors, suggesting that he’ll remain limited to third base. That’s probably bad news for Blaze Jordan. Bryan Torres, José Fermin and Ramón Urías figure to see time at second base.

The Padres are declining their $14 million club option on Nick Pivetta, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee.

This is a stunner. Pivetta was limited to eight starts due to elbow issues last season, but he finished the season healthy, starting two postseason games for the Padres, and he was one of the NL’s best pitchers in 2025, going 13-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 31 starts. The Padres only had the club option because Pivetta missed so much time. Otherwise, it would have been a player option for the 33-year-old right-hander. The decision suggests the Padres are still very worried about his arm, or, if not, they’re doing him a favor by letting return to free agency.

Orioles declined OF Luis Robert’s club option for 2027.

Robert will get a $2 million buyout of the $20 million option. Even though he was limited to 61 games last season and hasn’t been all that productive since 2023, he’ll draw plenty of interest from teams as a potential one-year upside play this winter. He hit .221/.300/.407 in 230 plate appearances for the Mets and Orioles in 2026.

Orioles sent RHP Colin Selby, RHP Codi Heuer, RHP Albert Suárez and INF/OF José Barrero outright to Triple-A Norfolk.

Suárez and Barrero declined the assignment and are now free agents. Heuer accepted his, though he’ll still be eligible for minor league free agency. Selby is also still with the organization for now. The 29-year-old missed all of last season with a shoulder injury that led to surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff at the end of July. He’s expected to be sidelined into 2027.

The Braves are hiring former Astros GM Dana Brown as a senior advisor in their scouting department.

Rays exercised RHP Drew Rasmussen’s club option for 2027.

Rasmussen’s option is worth $20 million, up from an original guarantee of $8 million. He’ll be a free agent after next season, so going by the Rays’ usual modus operandi, he should be viewed as a trade candidate this winter. Hopefully, though, they’ll try to make another World Series run with their ace.

Emilio Pagán declined his $10 million player option for 2027.

Pagán will now hit free agency after forging a 3.38 ERA and 25 saves in 2026 for Cincinnati over his 45 appearances with a 45/11 K/BB in 42 2/3 innings. At the age of 35, Pagán is likely looking at a one or two-year deal, but it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if he was closing for someone in 2027.

Reds declined the $8 million mutual option for 2027 on RHP Pierce Johnson.

Johnson is now a free agent. The right-hander was ineffective in his first — and likely last — season with the Reds with a 4.62 ERA over 55 appearances. His success in previous seasons gives him a chance to earn an MLB job in 2027, but at a smaller salary than the one he would have earned had the mutual option been picked up.

Reds declined the $16 million mutual option for INF Eugenio Suárez for the 2027 season.

Suárez is now a free agent. The infielder/DH did hit 26 homers in his return to Cincinnati, but he did so with just a .212 average while striking out 169 times in 498 at-bats. The 35-year-old should see a market because of his power, but the defensive limitations on top of the contact issues will mean he’s assuredly going to be playing for under that $16 million threshold in 2027.

Cubs re-signed RHP Gabe Klobosits to a minor league contract.

After three years in indy ball, Klobosits had a 3.51 ERA in 33 1/3 innings for the Cubs’ Triple-A Iowa affiliate last season. His lone major league experience came with the Nationals in 2021, when he had a 5.56 ERA in 11 1/3 innings out of the pen.

The Hanwha Eagles are immediately posting third baseman Si Hwan Roh, making him available to MLB teams.

Roh, 25, hit .283/.360/.505 with 29 homers in 127 games for Hanwha last season. His best season came in 2023, when he finished with a .929 OPS that was more than 200 points better than the league average in the KBO. The last two years, he’s been about 120 points better than the league average, and his strikeout rate has increased; in 2026, he fanned 25.7 percent of the team in a league with a 19.5 percent strikeout rate overall. He’s also not viewed as a particularly strong defender at third base. His power is intriguing, but he might fall short of being a quality MLB regular.
