Curtis Mead (wrist) hasn’t been cleared to resume swinging a bat.

The clock is definitely ticking here. Mead has just over two weeks left to ramp up a hitting progression if he’s going to help the Red Sox during a potential postseason run. The fact that he hasn’t been cleared to resume swinging a bat roughly seven weeks after fracturing his left wrist is a bit concerning.

Mead hasn’t taken an at-bat in a game situation since suffering a fractured left wrist during his Red Sox debut back in late July. The 25-year-old corner infielder has been added to Boston’s playoff roster in the wake of Roman Anthony suffering yet another hand injury. He’ll be available off the bench with Boston facing elimination in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #11
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters Mead will progress to hitting off a tee on Wednesday. It doesn’t seem like Mead is going to make it back before the regular season concludes, but the fact that he’s resumed swinging means he could be an option during the postseason. The 25-year-old infielder suffered a fractured left wrist during his Red Sox debut back in late July.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #11
Mead no longer has a cast on his left wrist after fracturing it back on July 27th. It’s nice to see him playing catch without the cast on his glove hand, but we’ll need to see him hit before we have a better sense of exactly when he’s going to return to Boston’s lineup.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #25
Cotillo elaborates that it’s a tentative return timetable, which leaves open the possibility that Mead could make it back at some point in mid-September. The encouraging news is that he won’t require season-ending surgery after suffering a fractured left wrist when he was hit by a pitch during his Red Sox debut earlier this week. There should be a clearer return timeline once he’s cleared to resume baseball activities at some point in August.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #25
It’s a brutal development for the Red Sox as Mead is out indefinitely and will fly back to Boston to visit a hand specialist to determine whether he’ll require season-ending surgery. The 25-year-old infielder, who was acquired from the Nationals for talented young lefty Connelly Early over the weekend, underwent an MRI that revealed the fracture after initial X-rays came back negative. It’s possible there was too much swelling for the fracture to show up on initial imaging at the ballpark after he was hit by a pitch during Monday’s series opener in West Sacramento. He suffered the injury during his second at-bat during his Red Sox debut. Fantasy managers should anticipate a lengthy absence and there’s a possibility his season is over.

It’s the worst-case scenario outcome for Mead after he was drilled by a pitch during the second at-bat of his Red Sox debut against the Athletics on Monday night. The 25-year-old infielder was acquired from the Nationals for lefty Connelly Early last week and is already facing an extended absence. There’s a strong possibility his season is over given the severity of the injury. Cassell adds that Nick Sogard is coming up from Triple-A Worcester to take Mead’s roster spot. It’ll be Caleb Durbin handling third base with Anthony Seigler moving back into a starting role at the keystone.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #25
The positive news here is that Mead appears to have avoided serious injury during his Red Sox debut after initial X-rays came back negative for any fractures. He was struck by a pitch from Athletics starter Jack Perkins during his second at-bat of the contest. The 25-year-old infielder, who was acquired from the Nationals in a trade over the weekend, is presumably day-to-day moving forward. It’s a significant relief for Boston and fantasy managers as well.

You can’t make this stuff up. Mead was replaced by Anthony Seigler at second base a couple frames after being drilled by a pitch on the left hand during his second at-bat in a Red Sox uniform after striking out in his first plate appearance. He’ll undergo X-rays to determine whether he suffered any fractures. There should be an update on his status shortly.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #25
Mead has a phenomenal opportunity to make some noise in Sutter Health Field’s high-octane offensive environment in West Sacramento after coming over from the Nationals in a challenge trade for lefty Connelly Early over the weekend. The 25-year-old former top prospect has gone through a bizarre odyssey in the early portion of his career, but he appears to have finally arrived as an impactful everyday option this season, launching 17 homers in 327 plate appearances for Washington. He’s started pulling the ball in the air with much greater frequency this season, which will absolutely work in Fenway Park. He’s at second base in his Boston debut, but is likely to also see time at the hot corner over the final two months.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #45
The Red Sox could have easily acquired Mead a few months ago, but they’re obviously much bigger believers now after he hit .254/.352/.500 with 17 homers in 327 plate appearances for the Nationals. And he does look like a perfectly legitimate major league hitter at this point. However, his bat speed and exit velocity numbers are all pretty average, and he just doesn’t offer much defensive value as a well-below-average defensive third baseman and potentially adequate first baseman. The Red Sox will likely make him their primary DH for now, allowing him to maintain some mixed-league value. Still, if they’re ever at full strength, he might not warrant starts against righties. Time will tell, but giving up Early here seems like a misstep. With Mead likely to see significant time at DH, Masataka Yoshida will again become a reserve, though perhaps a Jarren Duran trade could put him in left field for a time.

The Cardinals are declining Ryne Stanek’s $6 million option for 2027, says Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Stanek’s 4.02 ERA in 70 appearances last season was his low mark since he came in at 1.15 for the 2022 Astros. The Cardinals, though, are going to buy him out for $1 million instead of paying him $6 million for 2027.

Padres announced that INF Miguel Andujar declined his half of a mutual option for 2027.

The Padres obviously weren’t picking up their half of Andujar’s $8 million option, and he was getting a $2.5 million buyout either way. Initially the Padres’ top option at DH, Andujar wound up missing most of the final 3 1/2 months with a hamstring strain and then a wrist fracture. He did return for the postseason, going 0-for-3 with a walk off the bench. He hit .259/.303/.423 in 74 games while healthy. It’s possible he’ll get a major league deal as a platoon starter against lefties.

Padres declined RHP Lucas Giolito’s mutual option for 2027.

A late addition as he tried to overcome his late-season elbow issue with the Red Sox in 2025, Giolito signed one-year, $3 million deal with an $8 million mutual option in late April. With his velocity down 2-3 mph, he pitched a total of seven times for Padres in the first half, amassing a 5.16 ERA and an ugly 18/23 K/BB in 29 2/3 innings. He then went on the IL with elbow inflammation and never returned, leaving his future very uncertain.

Padres declined RHP Griffin Canning’s mutual option for 2027.

Canning gets a $1.5 million buyout of the $5 million option. He had a 5.68 ERA in 11 starts and 19 relief appearances for the Padres after returning from a torn Achilles’ tendon he suffered with the Mets in 2025.

Mets sent INF Eric Wagaman, OF Cristian Pache, RHP Philip Abner and RHP Cameron Weston outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

Pache was the only one who had been announced as being waived, as he was bumped from the roster to make room for Kyren Paris. Still, there are no surprises here. Wagaman, who hit .191/.269/.319 in 26 games for the Mets last season, and Pache will become free agents, while Abner and Weston will remain in the organization since this is their first time clearing waivers and they don’t qualify for minor league free agency.

Teruaki Sato was officially posted by the Hanshin Tigers of Japan on Sunday.

Today is the first day players can be posted, and those players can start negotiating with teams on Monday. As expected, right-handers Kaima Taira and Hiromi Itoh from Japan and Korean third baseman Si Hwan Roh were also posted today. The players from Japan have a 45-day window to agree to contracts, as opposed to 30 days for Roh, but the impending lockout makes that extra time moot.

Red Sox exercised RHP Garrett Whitlock’s $8.25 million option for 2027.

There had been some rumblings that the Red Sox could be working on a long-term extension with the 30-year-old right-hander, but there were never any doubts that he would return to be a major part of the Red Sox’ bullpen in 2027. Whitlock was outstanding over 54 appearances in 2026, registering a 1.72 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and a 59/9 K/BB ratio over 52 1/3 innings while notching seven victories and four saves.

Braves re-signed INF Jordan Groshans to a minor league contract.

Groshans, a first-round pick (12th overall) from the 2018 draft class (Blue Jays), had a nice season in the minor leagues in 2026 — slashing .276/.339/.576 with 33 homers, 88 RBI and a 91/42 K/BB ratio over 495 plate appearances between Double-A Columbus and Triple-A Gwinnett. He’s likely to open the 2027 season at the Triple-A level.

Padres’ left-hander Yuki Matsui will not exercise his opt-out clause and will remain with the team for 2027.

It’s an interesting decision as Matsui is only set to make $6.5 million in 2027 after a remarkable season in which he posted a 1.83 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 68/36 K/BB ratio over 64 innings in 54 appearances out of the Padres’ bullpen. He’ll once again function as part of the Padres’ setup corps in front of dominant closer Mason Miller.

Padres exercised RHP Kyle Hart’s $2.25 million club option for 2027.

The 33-year-old hurler made 46 appearances for the Padres during the 2026 campaign, compiling a 4.92 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 59/26 K/BB ratio over 64 innings of work. He’s likely to once again operate in a swingman role for the Padres in 2027 at a very affordable rate.
