Alcantara touches 100.8 mph in first career save

Sandy Alcantara notched his first major league save by protecting a one-run lead in the ninth Wednesday against the D-backs.

After giving up four runs in five innings Monday, Alcantara tonight made his first ever relief appearance with the Marlins and got three outs on 329- and 396-foot flyballs and then a caught stealing after a walk. The 329-footer was actually closer to being a homer than the 396-footer, since it was right down the left field line. Alcantara averaged 100.4 mph with his fastball in the one-inning outing, which is three mph higher than his average as a starter this season. Alcantara’s only previous relief appearances came in his only eight games with the Cardinals in 2017 before he was traded to the Marlins that winter. He’s still slated to start Sunday against the Padres.

Sandy Alcantara worked a scoreless ninth to pick up save for the Marlins in a 5-3 victory over Atlanta.

In his final appearance of the season — and possibly, but far from assuredly, his final appearance with the Marlins — Alcantara locked down his third save of the season. Raise your hand if you predicted that figure. You liar. Alcantara went 13-11 in 2026 with a 153/59 K/BB over 214 innings. The right-hander showed he’s still a strong option, and be it for Miami or a new club, there will be fantasy-relevance, even if he doesn’t miss bats with the best of them.

Sandy Alcantara won’t start Saturday but will be available out of the pen this weekend, manager Clayton McCullough said.

Weird but ok. Alcantara, who picked up his second save last night, is still going to wind up leading the league in innings pitched in his first year back from Tommy John. He’s 13-11 with a 3.89 ERA and a 152/59 K/BB in 213 innings. The Marlins didn’t say who would start in his place, but Dax Fulton and Bradley Blalock could be available to go multiple innings.

Sandy Alcantara let up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Cubs on Wednesday.

What is going on here? Alcantara leads the league with 213 innings pitched and weirdly, two have come in relief over the past week. With a save in each, Alcantara also became the first pitcher to alternate four outings with a start going at least five innings and a save since the save became an official stat in 1969. The first of those saves seemed like an act of desperation by the Marlins amidst bullpen issues and at the time, they were still alive in the playoff race. Now, they’re eliminated and still tried this for a second time. Since Eury Pérez has also come out of the bullpen in the past week, this feels like some sort of experiment. Regardless, these two surprising saves from Alcantara could have swung a few fantasy leagues.

Four days after his surprising save versus the D-backs, Sandy Alcantara lost to the Padres on Sunday after allowing four runs in six innings.

Alcantara was back down to 97 mph with his fastball and sinker today after averaging 100.4 mph in his relief appearance, and he gave up four runs for the fifth consecutive start. He’s now gone six weeks without winning, and his ERA is up to 3.91 as he prepares to face the Braves in his final start of the year.

Sandy Alcantara yielded four runs in five innings Monday in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks.

Alcantara outpitched Corbin Burnes and left with a one-run lead that later increased to three runs, but Arizona was able to come back from there. This makes four straight starts in which Alcantara has given up at least four runs, taking his ERA from 3.38 to 3.86. At least he did rebound some with six strikeouts tonight, matching his total from his three previous starts combined. He’ll face the Padres next.

Sandy Alcantara allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings and took the loss against the Mets on Tuesday.

Alcantara gave up seven hits, walked four and struck out one. He fell to 13-10 with the loss. Alcantara allowed at least seven runs in a start three times in his first 12 starts and had a 4.66 ERA in that span. In his next 18 starts before Tuesday, he never allowed more than five runs in a start and had a 2.84 ERA. Alcantara has a 3.78 ERA. Though the outing against the Mets was concerning, Alcantara can be trusted to bounce back in his next start against the Diamondbacks on the road next week.

Sandy Alcantara wasn’t at his best in Thursday night’s loss to the Royals, surrendering four runs on six hits over six frames.

Alcantara struck out two batters in the contest while walking one. Carter Jensen was responsible for most of the damage done against him, with an RBI triple in the third inning and a two-run blast in the fifth. The 30-year-old righty got eight whiffs on 98 pitches on the evening, posting a miserable CSW of only 20 percent. He’ll bring a 13-9 record, 3.54 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 142/51 K/BB ratio (195 2/3 innings) into Tuesday’s battle against the Mets.

Sandy Alcantara allowed four runs with three strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision against the Nationals on Saturday.

Alcantara stranded two runners in each of the first two innings before the Nationals broke through against him in the third, bringing four runs home on a walk and four hits. He’d settle down to give the Marlins three more scoreless frames before ending his day after six innings at 94 pitches. He struck out three. The 30-year-old right-hander will take a 3.46 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 140/50 K/BB ratio across 189 2/3 innings into a start against the Royals in Kansas City on Thursday.

Sandy Alcantara allowed one run over seven innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Red Sox.

Alcantara finished with six strikeouts and only issued one walk. He gave up only six hits with an RBI double by Mickey Gasper in the fifth inning representing the lone tally against him. The 30-year-old workhorse has allowed three earned runs or fewer, while tossing at least six frames, in six consecutive starts dating back to July 28. He’ll wrap up a two-start week with a road matchup against the Nationals on Sunday.

Sandy Alcantara took the loss on Wednesday in Philadelphia, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and one walk over six innings pitched.

Alcantara only struck out one batter on the evening but came away with a quality start. He has his lowest strikeout rate since 2019, but his run prevention has rebounded after last season’s 5.36 ERA. He leads MLB in innings pitched this season, a feat he also accomplished in 2022. He’ll carry a 3.46 ERA into his next matchup, a home start against the Red Sox.

He threw one inning of relief in the final game of the regular season, so he will not be built up long enough to pitch deep into this game. He’ll go as long as possible, and then the Phillies will turn things over to Andrew Painter.

Astros manager Joe Espada said the Astros will run a bullpen game in Game 1 of the Wild Card round against the White Sox.

Hunter Brown is the team’s ace, and he last pitched on September 25th, so he would be on four days’ rest if he pitched on Tuesday. The Astros are likely going to give him one extra day and have him start Game 2. Peter Lambert just pitched two days ago, and Hayden Wesneski threw seven innings just three days ago. As a result, it will probably be AJ Blubaugh for bulk innings on Tuesday before the Astros can turn things over to their starting rotation.

Twins fired pitching coach Pete Maki and assistant pitching coach Luis Ramirez.

Maki took over as the team’s pitching coach in July 2022, after Wes Johnson left the team midseason to take a job with LSU. Since then, the Twins rank 21st overall in ERA, including 25th this season and 24th last season. Maki has been with the organization since 2017. He started as the minor-league pitching coordinator before joining the MLB staff as bullpen coach in 2021. Injuries to Pablo Lopez, Mick Abel, David Festa, and others put the Twins pitching staff in a tough spot this season, and they will now find another voice to lead them.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Aaron Judge (calf) hit indoors on Sunday and will be part of live batting practice on Monday.

This is obviously good news, but the bigger hurdle for Judge with a calf strain will be running. Especially the stop-start running when he leaves the batter’s box or takes off after being on base. He also claims that he intends to play the outfield, which will be another major test for his calf. As of now, Boone says that the team has not made a decision about whether or not to carry Judge on their roster for the Wild Card series against the Red Sox.

Westburg missed the entire 2026 season after suffering a UCL sprain in spring training and then having a setback in early May. Westburg wound up having Tommy John surgery in the middle of May but is now beginning his hitting progression, which means he should have plenty of time to be ready to go by spring training.

Orioles general manager Mike Elias said that Kyle Bradish will undergo sports hernia surgery on Tuesday.

Bradish dealt with the injury over his final three starts of the season and was placed on the injured list on September 13th. The recovery from this surgery is usually a couple of months long, so he should be able to have a relatively normal offseason and build up to the necessary arm strength by spring training.

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Payton Tolle will start Game 1 of the Wild Card series against the Yankees.

Sonny Gray will start Game 2, with Ranger Suarez potentially lined up for Game 3. It seems that Tracy may be looking to break up his lefties. Tolle is certainly a worthwhile Game 1 starter. He finished the regular season with a 3.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 28.4 percent strikeout rate across 148 2/3 innings. He has never made a start in the postseason before, while Gray has previous experience. Gray also posted a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 21.8 percent strikeout rate in 169 innings this year. Either way, the Red Sox have a nice duo set up to start the first two games of the series.

Andy Pages hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning as the Dodgers beat the Giants 5-1 on Sunday.

Pages had a sac fly that accounted for the Dodgers’ only run over the first nine innings. He had a chance to break the game open with two on in the eighth, but he instead grounded into an inning-ending double play. He got another chance in the 10th after an Alex Call double gave the Dodgers the lead and essentially put the game away with his 23rd homer of the year. It was his second in six games since he returned from a fractured hand. He ends up at .274/.343/.468 with 85 RBI in 134 games.
