Dansby Swanson is not in the Cubs’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Reds in Cincinnati.

The Cubs are just easing Swanson back into action and giving him a day to recover after starting the first two games following his return from the injured list on Friday. He should be available off the bench if needed on Sunday. Nico Hoerner will slide over and cover shortstop while Pedro Ramirez starts at second base and will bat eighth against Reds’ right-hander Rhett Lowder.

Chicago manager Craig Counsell will stick with a near-identical lineup, with the exception of Matt Shaw at the hot corner instead of Pedro Ramírez, after Tuesday’s unexpected Game 1 shutout loss at the hands of Michael King and the Padres. Crow-Armstrong struck out three times in four plate appearances in that defeat. Here’s the full lineup: Crow-Armstrong (CF), Alex Bregman (DH), Michael Busch (1B), Seiya Suzuki (RF), Ian Happ (LF), Nico Hoerner (2B), Matt Shaw (3B), Carson Kelly (C) and Dansby Swanson (SS).

Bregman is ready for the start of the postseason after returning to Chicago’s lineup less than one week after suffering multiple facial fractures when he was hit by a foul ball in the on-deck circle. It’ll be rookie Pedro Ramírez filling in at the hot corner with Bregman limited to DH as he continues to recover. Here’s the full lineup for Tuesday’s series opener in San Diego: Pete Crow-Armstrong (CF), Bregman (DH), Michael Busch (1B), Seiya Suzuki (RF), Ian Happ (LF), Nico Hoerner (2B), Ramírez (3B), Carson Kelly (C) and Dansby Swanson (SS).

Swanson’s two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning brought home the only runs the Cubs would score in this loss to the Marlins. It tied the game at the moment, but Chicago’s bullpen would blow it later on. Alas, Swanson has now gone 4-for-15 with three runs scored and three RBI in four games since being activated off the injured list.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #3
All signs point to Bregman, who went through a light workout prior to Tuesday’s game against the Marlins, avoiding a trip to the injured list. It’s an extremely positive update after he suffered multiple facial fractures when he was struck by a foul ball in the on-deck circle over the weekend. The 32-year-old third baseman is at least a couple days away from getting back into Chicago’s lineup, but it’s possible he’s back before the postseason gets underway next week. It’ll be rookie Pedro Ramírez taking over at the hot corner in his absence on Tuesday night.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #3
It doesn’t sound like Bregman is going on the injured list for the final week of the regular season. However, he’s highly unlikely to be available in any capacity after being diagnosed with multiple facial fractures. The 32-year-old third baseman was injured in a freak accident where he was struck by a foul ball in the on-deck circle over the weekend. He’s aiming to make it back for the postseason. It’ll be rookie Pedro Ramírez taking over at the hot corner in his absence on Tuesday night.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #3
It’s a massive relief that Bregman didn’t suffer any additional serious injuries when he was hurt in a freak accident while standing in the on-deck circle during Sunday’s game against the Reds. The 32-year-old third baseman was one of the hottest hitters in the game during the second half, hitting .296 (68-for-230) with 17 home runs and 48 RBI in 59 games following the All-Star break. It’s an unfortunate development for fantasy managers heading into the home stretch in rotisserie leagues, and head-to-head formats still running, but it sounds like there’s optimism that Bregman will be able to return at some point during Chicago’s upcoming postseason run. It’ll likely be a combination of Pedro Ramírez and Matt Shaw handling the hot corner in his absence.
  • CHC Shortstop #7
Swanson delivered a 92-mph single off Cincinnati reliever Tejay Antone in the eighth inning. He also drew a walk, reaching base safely in two of his four plate appearances in his return following a one-month absence with a left oblique strain. The 32-year-old shortstop is going to finish as a top-12 range option at the position on the strength of 18 homers and 17 steals in 462 plate appearances.
  • CHC Shortstop #7
Swanson will take back over an every day role for the last week and change of the season. The low batting average has taken its toll on Swanson’s fantasy value, as he’s hitting .216/.300/.404 with 18 homers and 17 stolen bases. Still, he could be useful in deeper leagues for the final bit of the season.
  • CHC Shortstop #7
It sounds like there’s a strong possibility Swanson will return for Friday’s series opener against the Reds. The 32-year-old veteran shortstop has been out with an oblique strain since mid-August. His impending return likely pushes rookie Pedro Ramírez back into a part-time role with Nico Hoerner shifting back to second base.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman #75
Michael Busch and Ramírez homered off Paul Skenes in the first two innings. Those were the Cubs’ only runs until the eighth, when Gregory Soto lost the strike zone and forced in tying run with a bases-loaded walk and then the go-ahead run with a HBP. Ramírez opened that inning with a double and scored the first run. He’s batting .266/.323/.433 through 224 plate appearances. However, he could begin losing playing time in the second half of next week if Dansby Swanson is activated.

Dalton Rushing is undergoing right elbow surgery Tuesday, likely an internal brace procedure.

Avoiding the full Tommy John would likely allow Rushing to resume hitting in spring training and catching during the first half of the season. The Dodgers can plug in Hunter Feduccia as Will Smith’s backup while Rushing rehabs, but they might want to try to do better.

Jacob Misiorowski will start Game 1 of the World Series against the Rays on Friday.

He’ll be pitching on 11 days’ rest after throwing 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball in Game 1 of the NLCS. The Brewers have won each of Misiorowski’s last 11 starts, including the final nine of the regular season and his Game 1 outings against the Padres and Dodgers.

Shohei Ohtani is not expected to undergo any surgeries this offseason, according to Dodgers president Andrew Friedman.

Ohtani is slated to resume pitching next year, though Friedman acknowledged that the Dodgers might try something a little different in an effort to get him through the year as a two-way player. Ohtani had a 1.79 ERA in 85 2/3 innings over 14 starts in the first half of this year before knee and biceps injuries limited him to DHing the rest of the way.

Also on the list is Jason Kanzler, who is currently the Cubs’ farm director after previously serving as a hitting coach for the Astros. It doesn’t sound like the Mariners have finished bringing in new candidates quite yet.

The Red Sox announced that third base coach Chad Epperson and first base coach Pablo Cabrera will not return to their 2026 roles.

Epperson was serving as the manager at Double-A when the Red Sox fired Alex Cora and six other members of the MLB coaching staff back in April. The team wanted to fill roles from within, so Epperson was called up and given the job as third base coach. He will now reportedly be asked to manage Triple-A Worcester, Chas Tracy’s old job. It’s been reported that Cabrera will return to his previous role as the organization’s minor league defensive coordinator. At 29 years old, he was one of the youngest coaches on the Red Sox’s staff this season and will likely get another opportunity in years to come. The Red Sox will likely look outside the organization to fill their roles on the MLB staff.

Angels declined manager Kurt Suzuki’s option for the 2027 season.

Suzuki was given one season at the helm for the Angels, a season in which they fired essentially their entire pitching department mid-way through the year, and he will not be given another chance. The former catcher went 62-100 while leading a team that likely never had much of a chance to be competitive. He has apparently been offered a position with the organization as a special assistant, and the Angels will now look for another person to captain a ship that has been lost at sea for over a decade.

Jake Bloss (shoulder) allowed one run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings while striking out six.

Bloss had a difficult 2026 season. He had Tommy John surgery at the end of the 2025 season and then suffered a shoulder strain this past summer while working his way back. He’s been good so far in the Arizona Fall League, with a 2.70 ERA in 6 2/3 innings. In this outing, he touched 96 mph with his fastball and showed off a solid sweeper. He could be an option for Toronto in 2027 if he puts together a strong spring training.

Jett Williams went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two steals in Arizona Fall League action on Tuesday.

Williams is coming off a mediocre 2026 season that also saw him play through a wrist injury. The 22-year-old hit .233/.340/.384 with nine home runs, 21 steals, and a 79/47 K/BB ratio in 81 games at Triple-A. He’s now hitting .188 with a .597 OPS and five steals in early AFL action. It was not a great first season for the two prospects the Brewers got back in return for Freddy Peralta, but the trade arguably didn’t work out any better for the Mets.

Rockies C/1B prospect Jack O’Dowd went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Arizona Fall League action on Tuesday.

O’Dowd was a light-hitting prospect at the University of Texas and went undrafted. However, he hit .307/.383/.564 with 23 home runs and 91 RBI in 107 games across three levels in his first professional season. He’s also now hitting .313 with a 1.103 OPS, four home runs, and nine RBI in the Arizona Fall League while playing primarily first base and catcher. He should begin next season at Double-A.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that “Aaron Judge has a follow-up coming with Dr. Gregory Pearl regarding his rib.”

In the same press conference, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that he doesn’t anticipate offseason surgery for any Yankees player, which would include Judge. Cashman added that “We feel like we’re in a good place. He can take advantage of the rest of the winter and be ready to go when Spring Training starts.” While it does seem like Judge will be healthy heading into 2027, the bigger question is whether or not the Yankees will utilize the DH spot to take some stress off his body during the season and help him remain healthy for the full season as he gets older.
