James McCann hit a two-run homer in a loss to the Padres on Saturday.

McCann briefly gave the Diamondbacks a 4-3 lead with his two-run homer off Walker Buehler, but the Padres ended up scoring the next 10 and holding on for the win. McCann has homered seven times in 52 games with a solid slash of .283/.313/.461. He’s one of the better backup backstops in the sport.

Gabriel Moreno will likely DH on Saturday after leaving with a tender left hamstring on Friday.

With Moreno limited, manager Torey Lovulli indicated that Jesús Sánchez will be DFA’d in order to add a catcher prior to Saturday’s game.

James McCann went 2-for-5 and launched his sixth home run of the season as the Diamondbacks triumphed over the Rockies at Coors Field on Thursday afternoon.

McCann smacked a run-scoring single off of Tanner Gordon in the fourth inning that increased the Diamondbacks’ lead to 10-0. He then ambushed a first-pitch slider from Jimmy Herget in the sixth inning and crushed a 401-foot (108.7-mph EV) solo shot that made it a 12-1 ballgame. With his two-hit attack, the 36-year-old catcher is now hitting .286/.316/.449 with six homers and 26 RBI on the season.

Gabriel Moreno went 1-for-6 and slugged a three-run homer on Thursday as the Diamondbacks dispatched of the Rockies.

Moreno started the offensive explosion with a 416-foot (105.6-mph EV) three-run blast off of Tanner Gordon in the opening inning. That would be his only hit in six at-bats on the afternoon. For the season, the 26-year-old backstop is now hitting .308/.384/.486 with 16 homers and 81 RBI in what has been a very strong offensive campaign.

Gabriel Moreno went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the D-backs’ 5-3 victory over the Rockies on Wednesday.

Moreno is hitting .385 with four homers in his last 17 games. His season average is up to .310, giving him a legitimate shot of overtaking Luis Arraez at .312 for the NL batting title. He just needs to avoid running out of energy; he’s caught eight straight games now.

Gabriel Moreno went 3-for-4 and hit his 15th homer Wednesday against the Marlins.

Moreno has overtaken Nick Gonzales and Otto Lopez to move into second place in the NL with a .307 average. Only Luis Arraez, at .316, is ahead of him. Moreno is also 11th in the majors with an .870 OPS, placing him right in between Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.

Moreno put the Diamondbacks on the board in the first inning, taking Jansen Junk deep for a solo homer. He then drew a pair of walks and stole a base before knocking a base hit in the ninth to reach for a fourth time. The 26-year-old backstop has put together a career year, hitting .303/.382/.474 with 14 homers, 64 runs scored, 74 RBI, and six steals across 510 plate appearances.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday that Cam Schlittler will start Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Red Sox.

That means that Max Fried will pitch for the Yankees in Game 2 while Gerrit Cole would be waiting in the wings for Game 3 if necessary. Schlittler is certainly deserving of the honor as he posted a brilliant 1.95 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 239 strikeouts over 193 2/3 innings over 33 starts during the regular season and is the favorite to take home Cy Young award honors in the American League.
