Michael Wacha reaches 200 innings in defeat

Wacha gave up four hits, walked four and struck out five. He’s walked four batters in two of his last three starts. Wacha has been solid all year with a 3.33 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Guardians at home next Saturday.

Wacha gave up a solo homer to Jeremy Peña in the first inning, then was taken deep again by Peña for a second solo shot in the third. It was Yordan Alvarez who later got to Wacha in the fifth, launching a two-run homer. Wacha would return for one more scoreless inning, ending his day after six with two strikeouts. The 35-year-old right-hander will take a 3.34 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and a 149/49 K/BB ratio across 188 2/3 innings into a start against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Most of the damage done against him came via the long ball, with Heriberto Hernandez belting a solo home run in the opening inning and Agustín Ramírez adding one of his own in the fourth. The 35-year-old hurler generated a whopping 20 swings and misses on 96 pitches on the night — seven each on his fastball and changeup — while posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. Now 9-8 on the season, he’ll carry a strong 3.36 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 143/44 K/BB ratio (176 2/3 innings) into Tuesday’s tilt against the Diamondbacks.

Wacha was tremendous in this one, scattering four hits across eight innings of work while striking out a season-high 10 batters. The veteran righty didn’t allow an extra-base hit on the night and allowed only one runner to get into scoring position. Wacha ends the month of August having allowed just nine earned runs over 32 1/3 innings while striking out 25 batters. He’ll look to continue his strong run in his next start, which is set for Thursday at home against the Marlins.

Wacha would depart with two outs in the seventh at 96 pitches. He struck out five. The 35-year-old right-hander will take a 3.46 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and a 117/41 K/BB ratio across 150 2/3 innings into a start against the Athletics in Sacramento on Monday.

Wacha also issued three free passes on the evening while recording only one strikeout. The lone tally against him came on a long solo shot off the bat of Royce Lewis in the fifth inning. Aside from that though, Wacha was exceptional. He got four swings and misses on 94 offerings in the ballgame, posting a CSW of only 16 percent. He’ll tote a tidy 3.44 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a 112/41 K/BB ratio (144 innings) into a tough matchup against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Wacha put together a fantastic start in Coors Field after a lengthy weather delay. He leaned on his trusted changeup as his primary pitch and it forced 13 of his 17 total swings-and-misses. That’s tied for the most whiffs he’s induced in any outing this season and showed the might of a quality changeup in extreme altitude. He’s put together a solid season to this point with a 3.51 ERA, 111 strikeouts, and 38 walks through 138 1/3 innings. If he remains with the Royals through the trade deadline, his next would come against the Twins at home.
