Blake Snell was pulled after walking five and allowing one run in 3 2/3 innings Sunday against the Braves.

It wasn’t any fun to watch, but Snell did keep the Dodgers in it until the ball was taken from him. He struck out five, and none of the five batters he walked came around to score, though a couple did help to advance the one runner that scored in the first. He’ll likely be available in relief of Tarik Skubal in Game 5 if needed.

A little bit of a surprise, but a pretty justifiable one. Tarik Skubal will get the ball for Game 1 against Atlanta, and they’ll have another southpaw hurl the second game in Los Angeles. That means Yoshinobu Yamamoto — one of the best starters in baseball in 2026 — will be the starter for Game 3 at home for the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Snell was solid for four innings in what amounted to a playoff tune-up start. He made his first start since mid-September due to groin tightness. The results have been good when he’s healthy, but Snell has made just 20 starts and thrown 104 innings in two years since joining the Dodgers.

It’s challenging to forecast Snell making a significant impact from a volume standpoint, but it’s a phenomenal matchup to close out the regular season. The 33-year-old southpaw was cleared to take the ball as a tune-up for the postseason after departing his previous start back in mid-September after one inning with groin tightness. He’s unlikely to work too deep into his final regular-season outing, but the Giants are rolling out a borderline Triple-A lineup as they limp to the finish line. He’s a worthwhile option in deeper mixed leagues, but fantasy managers shouldn’t expect the Dodgers to push him from a pitch count perspective.

Snell appears to be on track to start Saturday’s penultimate regular-season contest against the Giants as his final tune-up prior to the postseason. There’s enough risk here from a health and volume standpoint that fantasy managers outside of deeper mixed leagues should probably seek alternative options for the final week of the season.

Technically, Sheehan could be brought back later this week to take the ball against the Giants in place of an injured Blake Snell (groin), but that would require another player, not necessarily Snell himself, to go on the injured list. The 26-year-old righty struck out nine over 5 1/3 shutout frames against San Francisco on Sunday. He’s been temporarily demoted to get Roki Sasaki back on Los Angeles’ active roster.,

Snell left Wednesday’s game with groin tightness. It looks like he’ll be limited to one tuneup appearance prior to the postseason.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #7
Snell elaborated that he experienced some left groin tightness while warming up and decided not to push it after throwing a scoreless opening frame against the Reds. He also noted that it’s not as severe as groin issues that he’s dealt with in previous years. There should be a clearer idea of his next steps once he resumes throwing in a couple days. The positive news for the Dodgers is it doesn’t appear to be a worst-case scenario for Snell with the playoffs right around the corner.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #7
Not good. The hope for the Dodgers is that Snell’s early departure was for precautionary reasons since he has a history of groin issues in previous seasons. Any sort of extended absence would be a significant hit to Los Angeles’ postseason rotation. The 33-year-old southpaw exited after throwing just 19 pitches in a scoreless opening frame in Cincinnati. The lone positive takeaway here is that he isn’t dealing with anything arm-related. He’ll presumably head for further evaluation and imaging to determine the severity of the issue and his next steps. There should be some additional clarity on his outlook following the contest.

It’s pretty much the last thing the Dodgers want to see with less than two weeks remaining until the postseason. Snell headed back to the clubhouse after throwing just 19 pitches in a scoreless opening frame. There should be an additional update on his status. Any sort of absence would put his postseason availability in serious jeopardy.

Snell gave the Marlins fits all night on Friday, limiting them to just three hits through the first five innings before giving up a single to Javier Sanoja with one out in the sixth. Snell would exit after the hit by Sanoja but was charged with an earned run after Augustín Ramírez doubled to bring home Sanoja on the next at-bat. Snell has been dominant since returning to the mound, allowing just four earned runs in his six starts since August while pitching 34 2/3 innings. Now sitting on a 1.91 ERA, Snell will look to stay hot in his next start, which is set for Wednesday on the road against the Reds.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports former Phillies general manager Sam Fuld has declined an offer to become the Athletics next president of baseball operations.

Fuld, who is currently Philadelphia’s president of business operations, has withdrawn his name from consideration. The 44-year-old former big leaguer, who wound up finishing his playing career with the Athletics in 2015, was viewed as one of the front-runners for the vacancy. Passan adds that Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith is one of the top candidates for the role.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. underwent laser eye surgery earlier this week.

The Laser Eye Center of Miami shared the news on Instagram that Guerrero underwent successful laser eye surgery to correct his vision. It’s notable that Guerrero’s offseason procedure comes on the heels of a disastrous campaign where he batted .260/.332/.356 with 72 runs scored, nine home runs, 57 RBI and seven steals in 609 plate appearances over 144 games. He swung at more pitches outside of the strike zone and walked much less often than previous years. The 27-year-old first baseman represents a logical rebound candidate for fantasy purposes heading into next season based on the fact that he remains in his physical prime and boasts an extensive track record of elite offensive production. He’s going to be a borderline top-100 pick in most fantasy drafts next spring.

Royals OF prospect Angeibel Gomez went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Arizona Fall League action on Friday.

Gomez, the second-youngest player in AFL history at just 17 years old, is still several hyperspace jumps away from reaching Kansas City. However, his fantasy stock has soared following a sublime DSL campaign in which he hit .361/.467/.653 with nine homers and 15 steals across 180 plate appearances. One of the premier prospects in the 2026 international signing class, Gomez received $2.9 million from the Royals and advanced to the fall circuit before even making his stateside debut. He’s an exceptionally fast runner who projects to develop into an above-average power producer as he matures physically. It’s not hyperbolic to suggest that his present trajectory puts him on track to become one of the top prospects in baseball by the conclusion of next season.

Diamondbacks 2B prospect Demetrio Crisantes went 4-for-5 with three RBI and a stolen base in Arizona Fall League action on Friday.

Crisantes, the top prospect in Arizona’s system, is making up for lost time on the fall circuit after missing the first two months of this past season with a hamstring strain. He missed most of the previous year recovering from shoulder surgery. The 22-year-old showcased his impressive hitting ability by slashing .319/.413/.548 with five homers in 160 plate appearances at the Double-A level before finishing the year hitting .278/.343/.412 with three homers in 209 plate appearances at Triple-A Reno. He’s a prospect that fantasy managers need to know entering next season.

Braves selected the contract of LHP Danny Young from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Young heads into the offseason with a spot on Atlanta’s 40-man roster to prevent him from becoming a minor league free agent. The 32-year-old southpaw struggled to a bloated 8.03 ERA across 12 1/3 innings this past season. He holds a serviceable 4.68 ERA over 73 innings in the majors since 2022.

Brewers LHP Rob Zastryzny elected free agency.

The 34-year-old southpaw was sent outright to Triple-A Nashville by the Brewers near the end of September. Rather than waiting it out to see if he could be an option to work out of their bullpen at some point during the remainder of the postseason, Zastryzny will head to the free agent market. He made just 11 appearances at the Triple-A level this season, registering a stellar 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and a 9/2 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings.

Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Globe reports that imaging on the injured leg of right-hander Garrett Whitlock revealed that he had been pitching through a fractured tibia that wasn’t properly diagnosed.

Given the severity of the injury, it’s awfully impressive that Whitlock was able to continue pitching — and pitch as well as he was — down the stretch and into the postseason for the Red Sox. The 30-year-old hurler isn’t expected to require surgery, but he will be in a walking boot for the next 4-6 weeks while the injury heals. Whitlock should still be able to go through his regular off-season routine and should be a full participant at the start of spring training.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that while Miguel Rojas (back) has improved, his status for the NLCS remains in question.

Rojas exited Game 3 of the NLDS due to pain in his lower back and sat out Game 4 on Wednesday. While he has progressed steadily during their time off, he’s still not ready to return and could potentially be left off of the Dodgers’ roster for their NLCS battle against the Brewers. Expect the Dodgers to make a final decision on his status on Sunday.
