Pedro Avila is staying with the SSG Landers of Korea, having agreed to a two-year extension.

Avila was a nice middle reliever for the Guardians in 2024, posting a 3.25 ERA in 74 2/3 innings, but he found himself out of a job afterwards anyway. He spent 2025 in Japan, returned to the Guardians on a minor league deal last winter and then, after struggling in Triple-A, he made his way to Korea in July and wound up going 9-2 with a 1.44 ERA in 14 starts for the Landers. Maybe we’ll see him again once this deal is up.
Brewers 'making the most of what they manufacture'
Dan Patrick ponders if the Brewers will gain the respect "they deserve" following their dominant run through the 2026 postseason, where they've maximized run production without an expensive roster.

Avila was playing in Japan last season and has not pitched for the Guardians in the big leagues this year. He posted a 7.50 ERA in 60 innings as a starting pitcher in Triple-A this season.

The 29-year-old hurler was released earlier in the week as he asked to explore other opportunities, but he ultimately decided that returning to the Guardians made the most sense for him. He’ll begin the season as extra bullpen depth at Triple-A Columbus.

Avila was granted his release to pursue opportunities elsewhere after being informed that he wasn’t going to make Cleveland’s season-opening bullpen. The 29-year-old reliever was in Guardians camp as a non-roster invitee. He spent all of last year pitching for the Yakult Swallows in Japan. He’ll likely have to settle for a minor league deal if he’s going to remain stateside.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #60
It’s a split contract for the 28-year-old hurler, who will earn a larger salary if he cracks the Guardians’ roster at any point during the 2026 campaign. Avila spent the 2025 season pitching for the Yakult Swallows of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. There, he registered a 3.33 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 74/42 K/BB ratio across 102 2/3 innings in 21 appearances.
  • INT Relief Pitcher #60
Avila heads overseas in an effort to bolster his long-term value after being removed from Cleveland’s 40-man roster last month. The 28-year-old righty was a durable workhorse in 50 appearances last year for the Guardians, compiling a respectable 3.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 73/30 K/BB ratio across 74 2/3 innings. It’s possible he’ll convert back to a starting role overseas in Japan.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #60
The 28-year-old hurler had been sent outright to Triple-A Columbus by the Guardians, but Avila rejected the outright assignment and will hit the free agent market instead. He did a nice job for the Guardians in 2024 — posting a 3.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 73/30 K/BB ratio across 74 2/3 innings in his 50 appearances. He shouldn’t have trouble landing on his feet elsewhere.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #60
It’s perplexing that Avila went unclaimed on waivers after posting a solid 3.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 73/30 K/BB ratio across 74 2/3 innings (50 appearances) last year in his Guardians debut. The 28-year-old righty will head to Triple-A Columbus as extra relief depth, but should factor into Cleveland’s relief mix in short order.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #60
Avila gets the boot from Cleveland’s 40-man roster to free up a spot for veteran high-leverage relief arm Paul Sewald. The 28-year-old righty was a revelation last year for the Guardians, posting a strong 3.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 73/30 K/BB ratio across 74 2/3 innings (50 appearances). He’s a virtual lock to be claimed off waivers in the coming days.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #60
The Guardians will not carry Angel Martinez, which means they will now go with 13 pitchers and 13 position players. It makes some sense considering how much they had to rely on the bullpen in the ALDS against the Tigers. Avila struggled in eight innings to start the season with the Padres, but he has been solid in 74 2/3 innings for the Guardians (50 appearances), posting a 3.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 73:30 K:BB ratio. He will give the Guardians another solid option out of the bullpen this series.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #44
Curry’s three starts have produced a 5.68 ERA and a total of eight strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings. There aren’t really any interesting replacements available in Triple-A, so he’ll probably stick for now. Stretching out Pedro Avila as a potential rotation option might be one idea for the Guardians. Avila finished off today’s game with 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Jonny DeLuca hit a game-tying single in the 12th inning to help the Rays to a win over the Brewers in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday.

DeLuca took advantage of a drawn-in infield with runners on first-and-third and singled up the middle to tie the game at 3-3. It was his only hit of the game and he has scuffled mightily over this postseason, but he keeps the Rays alive with a chance to make the series a little tighter with a Game 5 win Wednesday.

Cooper Pratt went 4-for-5 with a go-ahead homer in the 12th inning in a Game 4 loss to the Rays on Tuesday.

Pratt also singled twice and doubled, but the hit he will remember forever was his go-ahead homer off Ian Seymour that gives the Brew Crew a 3-2 lead in the 12th. Unfortunately for Pratt and the Brew Crew, it wasn’t enough with Tampa Bay scoring twice in the bottom of the frame. The 22-year-old has been outstanding in the postseason minus some mental gaffes, but the Brewers will need to win one more game to clinch that first championship.

Ben Williamson hit a walk-off single in the 12th inning to give the Rays a 4-3 win over the Brewers in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday.

Yep, just like we all predicted. With the bases loaded, Williamson took a defensive hack that scooted through the turf of Tampa Bay to give the Rays a win and staved off elimination for at least one more game. The 25-year-old has his first-ever postseason RBI, and likely won’t be in the lineup in Game 5 come Wednesday. He’ll be able to stay he had a game-winning hit in the World Series, however, which has to feel pretty dang good.

Griffin Jax allowed two runs while working four innings Tuesday in a Game 4 start against the Brewers on Tuesday.

Jax gave up a ton of loud contact with nine balls in play registering as hard hits. He also generated 11 swings and misses and six strikeouts, so it was more of a case of poor command than lack of stuff. He also was almost assuredly left in too long, and gave up a homer to David Hamilton in the fifth before exiting. Jax did a solid job as a starter for Tampa Bay in 2026, and he’ll likely be back in the middle of the Rays’ rotation in 2027, but he likely will be an option in Game 6 or 7 if Tampa Bay can force one.

Dustin May gave up two runs in three innings while not factoring in the decision against the Rays on Tuesday in Game 4 of the World Series.

May pounded the strike zone, and threw 30-of-39 pitches for strikes without issuing a walk. He found too much of the plate a time or two too many, however, and gave up an RBI double to Chandler Simpson and was charged for another run in the fourth after exiting with zero outs. May has a $20 million option that will assuredly be declined, so he’ll be a free agent who should have a decent market this winter. He could also pitch at some point out of the bullpen over the next few games, if necessary.

Dustin May will start Game 4 of the World Series, the Brewers confirmed.

It sounds like Brandon Woodruff would have opened tonight if he hadn’t finished last night’s game. As is, May will make his second start of the postseason after pitching in relief his last three times out. He’s surrendered five runs in eight innings thus far in October. The Brewers figure to be very aggressive tonight with all of their key relievers having enjoyed back-to-back days off.

The Rays have Jonathan Aranda back at first base but are starting Ryan Vilade over Victor Mesa Jr. in right field in Tuesday’s Game 4 against the Brewers.

Vilade started over Aranda at first base against a lefty on Monday. That Mesa committed a miscue in that one might factor into him taking a seat tonight, but on paper, going to Vilade against a righty seems like a bit of a downgrade both offensively and defensively. The Rays’ lineup as they try to extend the series: DH Yandy Díaz, 1B Aranda, 3B Junior Caminero, C Liam Hicks, CF Jonny DeLuca, LF Chandler Simpson, RF Vilade, 2B Richie Palacio and SS Taylor Walls.

Sal Frelick has been moved up to sixth, swapping spots with Garrett Mitchell, in the Brewers’ Game 4 lineup on Tuesday.

It’s the first change of the World Series for the Brewers, but they’re going with the same nine while facing a fourth straight righty. Frelick moves up despite taking a hard fall on his troublesome right shoulder late last night. He’s 4-for-11 with a homer through three games, compared to 2-for-11 for Mitchell. The lineup: LF Jackson Chourio, 1B Jake Bauers, DH Christian Yelich, C William Contreras, 2B Brice Turang, RF Frelick, SS Cooper Pratt, CF Mitchell and 3B David Hamilton.

Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler are the two finalists for the Mariners’ managerial job, according to Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.

Rocco Baldelli might have been the favorite for the gig before withdrawing from consideration. Now it’s down to Espada, who spent the last three years managing the Astros, and Kanzler, the Cubs’ farm director who would be managing for the first time. A decision should come before the end of the week.

Jeff Hoffman underwent debridement surgery on his right elbow, the Twins revealed.

He also had a bone chip removed. Hoffman missed the final weekend of the season, going on the IL with forearm inflammation. It was his first absence of any sort since 2022. He’s expected to resume throwing in eight weeks and should have a normal spring training, if there happens to be a normal spring training. Barring an expensive signing, he seems like the current favorite to close for the Twins next year.
