Luis Gil pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out four Wednesday in his second start for Licey of the Dominican Winter League.

Gil has thrown five scoreless innings between the two outings, though he has walked five. It seems like there’s a pretty good chance the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year will be traded this winter after finishing the season in the minors.

Gil walked four and allowed an unearned run on his own error in two hitless innings against the Rays on Thursday. Although he’s just two years removed from winning AL Rookie of the Year honors, it’s quite possible that Thursday’s outing will wind up being Gil’s swansong with the Yankees. He has a 4.61 ERA and a 17/18 K/BB in 27 1/3 major league innings this season.

The 28-year-old hurler has been impressive since transitioning to a bullpen role at the Triple-A level and could wind up being a major weapon out of the Yankees’ bullpen down the stretch. Yerry De los Santos was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move to clear a spot in the Yankees’ bullpen.

Gil had been rehabbing from shoulder inflammation but was activated off the IL a week ago and kept in the minors. With Max Fried (elbow) and Ryan Weathers (forearm) now banged up, there’s a chance the Yankees will work to stretch Gil out in Triple-A. He threw 30 pitches in this one, firing 22 of them for strikes and not walking any batters. At worst, he could provide the Yankees with length out of their bullpen soon if they wanted it.

Gil has been out for over three months with right shoulder inflammation and only threw three total innings between two rehab appearances with High-A Hudson Valley. Perhaps the Yankees are preparing him for a role in their bullpen as the playoffs near. Regardless, don’t expect him to contribute in a major way any time soon.

Gil has been on the injured list at Triple-A since May 8th due to inflammation in his shoulder, so he will need plenty of time to build his innings back up. Given that he had already been sent to the minors before the injury, it’s a long shot that he pitches meaningful innings for the Yankees this season.

Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone noted that Gil won’t throw for at least the next three weeks due to the issue. Boone also clarified that this is a new injury and not something that that was causing his poor performance during his time with the Yankees.

It’s not a huge surprise, but it’s still noteworthy. The 27-year-old didn’t fool the Houston hitters at all Sunday while allowing six runs over four-plus innings, and the Yankees will have Carlos Rodón available to them shortly. There’s still some long-term upside in Gil — he just had a 6 1/3 scoreless outing the game before — but he’s safe to drop in redraft formats.

Gil had good velocity today, but he induced just three missed swings and finished with no strikeouts. He also walked three. It seemed like he was in line to make one more start next weekend against Baltimore before Carlos Rodón’s return, but that might change after the weak showing today.

Credit to Gil, but a lot of this was bad hitting. Gil’s velocity was actually down about 1.5 mph on his fastballs and 3.5 mph on his slider, and he ended up with just two strikeouts and three walks. He gave up eight hard-hit balls, but those produced one single and eight outs (one was a GIDP). Gil now has a 4.11 ERA and a 9/8 K/BB over 15 1/3 innings over three starts. He’ll face the Astros on Sunday, but he’s in line to be replaced in the Yankees rotation sometime next month.

Gil looked great early in this one. His fastball had life, his changeup was dancing, and his slider was nasty. Through four innings, the only run on his ledger came via a solo home run from Adam Frazier of all people. Then, things fell apart in the fifth. Logan O’Hoppe jumped all over a letter-high fastball to tack on another run before Gil walked Zach Neto on four pitches. Then, Mike Trout stepped to the plate and hit his third home run in as many days. The pitch was in his wheelhouse: low and center cut. All three of the home runs the Angels hit came against Gil’s fastball and it was an ugly finish to what felt like it could’ve been a promising outing. He’ll take a 7.00 ERA through two outings into a two-start week in Boston and Houston coming up.

Andrew Parker of Sox Prospects reports that the Tigers will acquire infielder Tsung-Che Cheng from the Red Sox for cash considerations.

The deal won’t be made official until the Tigers clear the requisite room on their 40-man roster which could take a day or two. Cheng, 25, appeared in 14 games with the Red Sox in 2026, slashing .256/.318/.282 with zero homers and five RBI in 44 plate appearances. He’ll add infield depth for the Tigers.

According to Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies plan to designate veteran backstop Garrett Stubbs for assignment.

Once the move is made official, the club will have five days to trade him or to put him through waivers. Stubbs, 33, played in 35 games for the Phillies during the 2026 campaign, slashing .153/.215/.153 with zero homers, three RBI and a 15/3 K/BB ratio over 65 plate appearances.

Brewers RHP’ Dustin May declined his $20 million mutual option for 2027.

Instead, he’ll receive a $500,000 buyout and will look for a lucrative multi-year deal on the open market. The 29-year-old righty made 31 starts between the Cardinals and Brewers in 2026, posting a 4.70 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and a 144/50 K/BB ratio across 145 2/3 innings during the regular season. He then logged 11 innings in five appearances out of the Brewers’ bullpen as they marched to their first World Series title in franchise history. May shouldn’t have any trouble finding a landing spot in free agency.

Mets designated OF Cristian Pache for assignment.

The Mets had to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the addition of Kyren Paris on Thursday and unfortunately for Pache, he was the odd man out this time. The 27-year-old defensive specialist received just eight plate appearances with the Mets in 2026, going 1-for-8 with four strikeouts. There’s a possibility that other clubs could take a chance on him on waivers.

Mets claimed INF/OF Kyren Paris off waivers from the Angels.

Paris burst onto the scene with an impressive power display at the start of the 2025 season but has come crashing back to reality since then. In 2026, he saw just 18 plate appearances with the Angels, going 0-for-15 with eight strikeouts. He’ll give the Mets another intriguing utility option.

Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that Bo Bichette will exercise his $42 million player option to remain with the Mets for the 2027 season.

Bichette could have opted out and tried for more on the open market, but he’ll return to the Mets for a second season instead. The 28-year-old infielder slashed an underwhelming .260/.312/.390 with 18 homers, 78 RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 696 plate appearances in 2026. The expectation is that he’ll once again function as the team’s primary third baseman in 2027.

Braves exercised INF Ozzie Albies’ $7 million club option for 2027.

Like teammate Ronald Acuna Jr., Albies is on a very team-friendly contract which made this option an easy decision for the club to exercise. The 29-year-old second baseman hit .237/.293/.392 with 22 long balls, 73 RBI and four stolen bases in a massive 683-plate appearances while playing in all 162 games for the Braves in 2026.

Braves exercised OF Ronald Acuña Jr.'s $17 million club option for 2027.

This one was an absolute no-brainer as the 28-year-old outfielder remains on a very team-friendly contract. While not elite, he had a solid all-around season in 2026, slashing .255/.345/.451 with 20 homers, 55 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 469 plate appearances across 107 ballgames. Even with his extensive injury history, he’s likely to be a top-30 selection in all fantasy drafts next spring.

Independent journalist Francys Romero reports that the Orioles are expected to decline their $20 million club option on Luis Robert Jr. for the 2027 season.

The 29-year-old outfielder will receive a $2 million buyout before he hits the free agent market. Once considered among the brightest up-and-coming stars in the game, Robert has struggled through injury and ineffectiveness for the past three seasons. In 2026, he slashed a meager .221/.300/.407 with 11 homers, 26 RBI and two stolen bases in 230 plate appearances between the Mets and Orioles. He’ll be one of the most intriguing names available on the open market this winter.

Royals declined RHP Carlos Estévez’s $13 million club option for 2027.

Instead, they’ll pay the 33-year-old right-hander a buyout of $2 million. After a brilliant 2025 season in which he notched a league-leading 42 saves and posted a 2.45 ERA across 66 innings of work, Estévez was limited to just one appearance in 2026 due to recurring shoulder issues. He finally underwent surgery in early September, which puts his outlook for the start of the 2027 season in jeopardy.
