J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group reports that the Dodgers are close to finalizing a minor league deal with Carlos Asuaje.
Asuaje was released by the Cubs back in May of 2020 after signing a minor league deal with Chicago. He’s capable of playing several spots in the infield and in the outfield, but he’s hit just .240/.312/.329 in his brief time in the majors. It’s unlikely he provides anything more than organizational depth in 2021.

The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reports that “re-signing Alex Bregman remains a priority” for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox have been linked to Bregman all offseason and seem to have every intention of re-signing their third baseman from last year. However, Bregman’s market is heating up, so if he were to sign with another team, McCaffrey notes that the Red Sox intend to “push harder for free-agent infielder Bo Bichette with the intent of playing him at second base” and starting Marcelo Mayer at third base. “The Red Sox are also in the mix for free agent third baseman Eugenio Suárez and have shown interest in Houston’s Isaac Paredes and Arizona’s Ketel Marte"; however, trades feel less likely now that the Red Sox have depleted much of their minor league starting pitching depth.
Will Pirates make more moves this offseason?
James Schiano and Eric Samulski discuss the Pirates acquiring Jhostynxon Garcia and signing Gregory Soto, who appeared in 25 games with the Mets last season and struggles with "poor command" and a limited repertoire.
  • INT Left Fielder #29
Alexander Canario signed with the Seibu Lions in Japan.
The 25-year-old Canario has a .229/.283/.368 slash line in 108 MLB games. He was a prospect of note back in 2023 after a huge 2022 season, but he was never able to match that level again. Last season, he slashed .243/.336/.514 with 18 home runs, 47 RBI, and five steals in 64 games in Triple-A. It wouldn’t be surprising if he lead Nippon Professional Baseball in home runs next season.

The Red Sox are acquiring Willson Contreras from the Cardinals, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Cardinals will get righties Hunter Dobbins, Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita and will send Boston $8 million, according to Passan. Contreras, who is owed $41.5 million for the next two years or, if his option is picked up, $54 million for the next three, will apparently be waiving his no-trade clause to take over as Boston’s first baseman. That means Triston Casas could open up in Triple-A if healthy, though if he impresses in the spring, there’s also the chance the Red Sox could go with him and Contreras splitting time between first and DH. The Cardinals figure to install Alec Burleson at first, which would open an outfield spot back up for Jordan Walker alongside Lars Nootbarr and Victor Scott II. Contreras hit .257/.344/.447 with 20 homers in 135 games last season in his first year since giving up catching.
  • FA 3rd Baseman #28
Mariners’ general manager Justin Hollander said during a recent interview with MLB Network Radio that his club remains interested in bringing back Eugenio Suárez.
The 34-year-old slugger was acquired for the second time at last season’s trade deadline and Suárez added significant right-handed punch to a lineup that was devoid of it. Suárez hasn’t seen his market materialize quite as expected this winter, so a reunion with the M’s on a multi-year deal may make sense for both sides.
  • 1st Baseman #31
Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports that Bobby Dalbec has signed a one-year contract to join the Yomiuri Giants in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
The 30-year-old slugger will earn more than $1 million guaranteed on the deal. Dalbec slashed an underwhelming .222/.290/.422 with seven homers and 47 RBI in 338 plate appearances across six big league seasons, so taking the guaranteed money overseas with a chance to showcase what he can do in a full-time role makes a great deal of sense.
  • CWS 3rd Baseman
White Sox signed INF Munetaka Murakami to a two-year, $34 million contract.
The deal is now official. The 25-year-old slugger comes to Major League Baseball after blasting 265 home runs in eight seasons in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, including a record 56 long balls during the 2022 season. He’s expected to serve as the White Sox’ everyday first baseman and will play half of his games in the friendly confines of Rate Field in Chicago. His counting stats will be negatively impacted by the overall quality of the White Sox’ lineup, but in terms of overall landing spots, it’s not terrible. He’ll also be incredibly motivated to prove his worth after the bidding on his services was underwhelming.
  • COL Shortstop #65
Rockies signed INF Vimael Machín to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Machín appeared in just four big league contests with the Orioles in 2025, going 1-for-11 (.091) with a solo homer and a 2/1 K/BB ratio. He’ll get an opportunity in Cactus League action to compete for a reserve spot on the Rockies’ Opening Day roster, though he’ll be facing an uphill battle.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #72
Phillies signed RHP Jonathan Hernández to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Hernández, 29, missed the majority of the 2025 season due to elbow and shoulder issues. He wound up logging just 12 innings for the Rays at Triple-A Durham where he posted a 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 13/6 K/BB ratio. As long as he’s healthy, Hernández adds solid bullpen depth for the Phillies and should get an opportunity at some point during the 2026 season.
  • SF 1st Baseman
Giants signed 1B Jake Holton to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The 27-year-old spent the first seven years of his minor league career in the Tigers’ organization. In 2025, he slashed .257/.349/.479 with 19 long balls, 66 RBI, six stolen bases and a 118/54 K/BB ratio over 464 plate appearances at Double-A Erie. He adds minor league depth at first base for the Giants.
  • INT 3rd Baseman
Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the White Sox plan to play 25-year-old slugger Munetaka Murakami at first base.
The White Sox made waves on Sunday morning when it was announced that they had signed the Japanese slugger to a two-year, $34 million contract. While it’s a bit surprising that he didn’t generate more interest around the league, he does add left-handed power to the middle of the White Sox’ lineup. His arrival likely pushes Miguel Vargas over to third base while potentially taking at-bats away from Lenyn Sosa or Edgar Quero.
