Guardians designated C Zack Collins for assignment.
Collins has been jettisoned from Cleveland’s 40-man roster to make room for newly-acquired veteran backstop Eric Haase. The 28-year-old backstop was only with the club for a handful of contests in place of an injured Cam Gallagher (concussion).

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Brandon Pfaadt is being “slow-played” because of a “side issue” that popped up during the offseason.
Lovullo added that it shouldn’t cause Pfaadt to miss any time during the regular season. Pfaadt is reportedly pitching in a backfield game today. Even if he were healthy, Pfaadt’s 5.25 ERA and rough peripherals would make him a tough stream candidate in most leagues. He’s a likely stay-away in all but the deepest NL-only leagues.
ABS won't remove 'human element' from MLB umpiring
Dan Patrick & Co. weigh in on the impact the ABS challenge system will have at the MLB level this season, why it isn't "sneaking up" on players, and why it won't remove the "charm" of umpiring traditions.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Cristian Mena (shoulder) re-injured his teres major and has been shut down from all throwing activity.
Mena didn’t pitch after suffering a teres major strain in early June, and this does not sound promising for him throwing again soon. It would not be surprising if he wound up having surgery at some point. Mena had a 1.35 ERA in three appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2025, striking out eight in 6.2 innings pitched.

Samuel Basallo (side) left Thursday’s Grapefruit League game against the Tigers with right side abdominal discomfort.
He made a lunging tag at the plate on a relay and stayed down for a bit before the trainer came over. Basallo left the field walking gingerly. We’ll have more as it becomes available, but it’s possible that he’ll miss real time with a core injury.

New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports the Athletics have made a long-term extension offer to Nick Kurtz.
Sherman received “no word on the likelihood of getting it to the finish line” from his sources, but this fits the A’s pattern of locking up their pre-arbitration players to long-term contracts. Kurtz slashed a sublime .290/.383/.619 in 489 plate appearances last year and is one of the first fantasy first basemen off the board in all formats this year. It would probably take a pretty hefty offer to get Kurtz to sign a long-term extension after that sort of powerhouse season.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Royce Lewis was scratched from Thursday’s Grapefruit League lineup with tightness in his side.
Lewis experienced the tightness after running the bases pre-game. This is supposedly “out of an abundance of caution,” which we’re sure everyone will take to mean everything is going just fine given Lewis’ injury history. We’ll provide further updates as we have them, but Lewis will remain a risky fantasy pick because of his inability to stay healthy.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Shane McClanahan (triceps) is slated to make his spring debut next Tuesday.
He did well, per Cash, in throwing “2 innings” of live batting practice today. We’d love to have some data on McClanahan before draft season concludes — he certainly could be a great bargain if he’s finally healthy. Tuesday’s appearance will tell us a lot about how seriously we should take his chances of pitching in the majors after two consecutive lost seasons.

Yuki Matsui (groin) was ruled out of the World Baseball Classic and his status for Opening Day is “in question.”
Yumeto Kanemaru will take Matsui’s place on Japan’s WBC roster. Matsui told reporters he is continuing a build-up, but hasn’t yet progressed to throwing off a mound. It sounds like he might have an early-season IL stint if he can’t progress to throwing off a mound in the near future.

Rockies OF Brenton Doyle (wrist) underwent imaging after being scratched on Wednesday.
There are no results yet, but the fact that the Rockies sprung for imaging could mean that Doyle’s wrist injury is more serious than initially thought. Stay tuned.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #49
Pablo López (elbow) underwent an internal brace procedure and the Twins are “optimistic” about his chances of returning closer to the beginning of the 2027 season.
It’s broadly good news that López’s surgery was “less invasive” than a standard Tommy John surgery. Assuming he’s able to look good in his build up and has no setbacks, a return in the first half of the 2027 season will be on the table for the star starter. López will be on the final year of his four-year, $73.5 million contract in 2027. “This is the better of the two surgeries,” Twins athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said. “We’re pretty excited about that. Pablo is excited about that as well.”
  • MIN Pitcher #58
David Festa (shoulder) was diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement and his status for Opening Day “is now in question.”
“Didn’t really say anything because sometimes when you’re building up, you don’t always feel great. But once my bullpen (this week) wasn’t as good as it probably should’ve been, I spoke up and got an image done. Everything lines up pretty well with what I’m feeling. So I plan to sit out throwing for two to three weeks and then if I feel good, get going again,” Festa told The Athletic’s Dan Hayes. The impingement is apparently not related to last year’s shoulder injury.
