James McArthur slammed the door on the Astros on Friday night, recording the final five outs to record his second save of the season.
The 26-year-old hurler came on after Chas McCormick crushed a three-run homer in the eighth that cut the Royals’ lead to two runs. He allowed an infield single to Jose Altuve, but escaped the inning unscathed. McArthur then returned for the ninth and retired the heart of the Astros’ lineup in order to preserve a two-run lead. He holds an underwhelming 5.59 ERA over 19 1/3 innings on the season, but that comes with a stellar 0.98 WHIP and a 17/2 K/BB ratio over 19 1/3 innings. He looks to be staking his claim to the closer’s role for the Royals.
