Blue Jays designated RHP Paolo Espino for assignment.

Espino was removed from Toronto’s 40-man roster in a procedural move to open up a spot for September call ups. The 37-year-old journeyman righty made three appearances (one start) earlier this season for the Blue Jays.

Willson Conteras (hand) is not in Friday’s starting lineup for the Red Sox against the Rays.

He was hit by a pitch on a swing and left the game on Thursday. X-rays came back negative, but he will likely remain day-to-day for most of the weekend. Nick Sogard is handling first base tonight while Isiah Kiner-Falefa squeezes into the lineup at second base.

Reds recalled RHP Julian Aguiar from Triple-A Louisville.

One Julian replaces another as Julian Garcia heads to the injured list. Aguiar holds a cringe-inducing 6.27 ERA in 12 starts for Triple-A Louisville this season, having walked 31 in 58 innings after missing 2025 to Tommy John surgery. However, he was already on the 40-man roster, so here he is, likely to handle low-leverage work in the bigs.

Reds placed RHP Julian Garcia on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to September 17, with right elbow loose bodies.

Elbow issues for a pitcher is never what you want to hear. This ends Garcia’s season. He had a 3.33 ERA in 46 innings with the Reds, notching two saves and striking out 41. The 31-year-old is set to be a free agent after the season. Assuming this isn’t a long-term issue, he’ll likely get a shot to compete for a bullpen spot somewhere next year.

Reds transferred 1B Spencer Steer from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

Steer was unlikely to play again this season either way, and this should just about end his ability to return since he was originally placed on the injured list on July 27. It’s a procedural move to free up a 40-man roster spot for new Reds infielder Oswaldo Cabrera.

Chase DeLauter (wrist) is batting third for the Guardians in Friday’s game against the Athletics.

He had sat out Tuesday and Wednesday’s games. DeLauter has been quite dinged up down the stretch; he’s played in just 10 September games so far. But he has hit .243/.333/.432 when able to play, with a homer and two stolen bases. He’s safe to activate in daily transaction leagues against A’s starter Mason Barnett.

Liam Hicks is not in Tampa Bay’s starting lineup against the Red Sox on Friday.

The Rays have faced three lefties in a row, and Hicks started the middle game of the three while sitting tonight and on Wednesday. Nick Fortes will be out there at catcher.

Reds claimed INF Oswaldo Cabrera off waivers from the Yankees.

Cabrera, 27, is probably a better stab at a utility infielder than Ivan Johnson has been for the Reds this year. We’ll see if they activate him down the stretch. Nobody needs to rush the waiver wire for Cabrera in the last days of the regular season.

Athletics optioned LHP Joe Rock to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Rock threw 16 pitches and recorded zero outs in his Athletics debut yesterday, in a game that also featured three stolen bases against him.

Athletics recalled RHP Mason Barnett from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Barnett will start tonight’s game against the Guardians. Normally we can’t recommend streaming pitchers with a 7.08 ERA, and today will be no exception.

Orioles optioned RHP Codi Heuer to Triple-A Norfolk.

Heuer did not pitch in the few days he was active since being recalled on September 14. The Orioles needed the roster spot for Cade Povich so he could start tonight against the Brewers.
