Mark Leiter didn’t pitch Thursday due to a back injury.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Leiter felt “something” in his back to keep him from making his scheduled Grapefruit League appearance. The good news is that Leiter is scheduled to throw a live bullpen session Sunday, so there’s still a chance the 34-year-old can be ready for Opening Day.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone confirmed that right-hander Clarke Schmidt will undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Friday.
The procedure will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister. Schmidt will obviously miss the remainder of the 2025 season and most of the 2026 campaign as well while recovering from the procedure. Expect him to be moved to the 60-day injured list in the coming days to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster. Cam Schlittler will be given the first opportunity to hold down Schmidt’s spot in the Yankees’ rotation.
Kim should settle in as Rays starting shortstop
Ha-Seong Kim returned to the Tampa Bay Rays this week after missing the first half of the season with a shoulder injury, and Eric Samulski examines Kim's fantasy value down the stretch.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #2
Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora told reporters on Thursday that Alex Bregman (quad) will return from the injured list and play in two games at Fenway Park over the weekend against the Rays.
Cora didn’t commit to which two games Bregman would play in, or which day he would be activated from the injured list, but Friday seems the most likely target. The 31-year-old slugger was slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 homers and 35 RBI through his first 51 games before landing on the injured list in late May with a right quad strain.
  • TB 2nd Baseman #8
Brandon Lowe (side) was held out of the Rays’ starting lineup for the fourth consecutive game for Thursday’s series opener against the Red Sox in Boston.
The good news is that there still haven’t been any rumblings of Lowe landing on the injured list, though if this drags on another couple of days they may have to reconsider. Taylor Walls will start in his place at second base and will bat ninth for the Rays against Red Sox’ right-hander Walker Buehler
  • WSH 3rd Baseman #55
Brady House is not in the Nationals’ starting lineup for Thursday evening’s tilt against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
It’s nothing more than a routine night off for the 22-year-old third baseman. House has functioned as the team’s starter at the hot corner since his promotion from Triple-A Rochester, slashing .247/.279/.296 with zero homers, eight RBI and a pair of stolen bases through his first 86 plate appearances. Paul DeJong will start in his place and will bat sixth against Miles Mikolas and the Cardinals on Thursday evening.
  • SEA 3rd Baseman #9
Ben Williamson is not in the Mariners’ starting lineup for Thursday evening’s tilt against the Mariners.
It looks to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 24-year-old infielder. Williamson has hit an uninspiring .257/.293/.322 with just one homer, 15 RBI, two stolen bases and a 59/11 K/BB ratio over 243 plate appearances for the Mariners this season. Miles Mastrobuoni will start in his place at the hot corner and bat ninth for the Mariners against Yankees’ right-hander Marcus Stroman on Thursday.
  • CWS Shortstop #12
Colson Montgomery is not in the White Sox’ starting lineup for Thursday’s battle against the Guardians.
The 23-year-old rookie shortstop has started each of his first six games since joining the big league club on Friday, hitting .333 (6-for-18) with two RBI and a 4/3 K/BB ratio. Chase Meidroth will draw the start at shortstop and bat leadoff for the White Sox against Guardians’ southpaw Logan Allen on Thursday evening.
  • BAL Right Fielder #9
Tyler O’Neill is not in the Orioles’ starting lineup for the second half of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Mets.
The Orioles are being careful with the workload they put on the oft-injured 30-year-old outfielder, so it’s not surprising to see him sitting out half of a doubleheader. He could make an appearance off the bench in a tough spot against a tough left-hander though should the right situation arise.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #17
Rays optioned RHP Eric Orze to Triple-A Durham.
Orze is demoted to make room for Bryan Baker after the Rays acquired Baker in a trade for the 37th pick. Orze will likely be back at some point this season with Tampa Bay as a middle-inning option.
  • NYY Right Fielder #27
Giancarlo Stanton is not in the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Mariners.
The Yankees will also give Paul Goldschmidt a day of rest for the finale against Seattle and Bryan Woo, and Aaron Judge will be the designated hitter for a mini-rest day. Ben Rice will start at first base for the first time in the series, and Trent Grisham is also in the lineup after missing the previous two games.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #51
Robert Murray of FanSided reports that Atlanta is not interested in trading Chris Sale (ribs) before the trade deadline.
Murray reports that Atlanta is not interested in moving Sale nor any other player that is signed past the 2025 season. The team believes that they are still in a window of contention, and they aren’t interested in closing that window with moves of players like Sale, Ronald Acuna Jr. or Austin Riley. Things can change between now and the deadline, of course, but count on Sale being at the top of the rotation for Atlanta to begin 2026.
