Mahle worked around some trouble in each of the first four innings with the help of a pair of double plays. The Giants would finally get to him in the fifth, bringing two runs in to score on two base hits and a double. Mahle scattered eight hits in all, striking out only one batter. The 30-year-old right-hander will take a 1.14 ERA, 0.98 WIHP, and a 26/13 K/BB ratio across 31 2/3 innings into a start against the Athletics in Texas on Thursday.

Baserunners, let alone runs, were at a premium in Tuesday’s pitcher’s duel between the Dodgers and Rays. Ohtani came through for Los Angeles in the sixth inning with a solo homer off Drew Rasmussen. That would prove to be the winning run in the 1-0 affair. The 31-year-old star is up to 15 homers, 51 runs, and 42 RBI while slashing .297/.419/.547 across 317 plate appearances.

Scott got the call to work the ninth inning with a one-run lead over the Rays. He made quick work, striking out two batters in a perfect frame on just 11 pitches. The 31-year-old left-hander picks up his ninth save of the season to go with a 2.32 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, and a 38/3 K/BB ratio across 31 innings.

Wrobleski was outstanding on Tuesday, keeping the Rays off the board over six frames. He allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter, tossing an efficient 50-of-67 pitches for strikes and collecting five strikeouts. The 25-year-old left-hander will take a 2.72 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and a 50/16 K/BB ratio across 79 1/3 innings into a start against the Twins in Minnesota next Tuesday.

Rasmussen was excellent despite falling in line for the loss on Tuesday with no run support. He held the Dodgers to just one run in Los Angeles, scattering six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. The one run came on a solo homer by Shohei Ohtani in the sixth inning. The 30-year-old right-hander will take a 2.59 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and an 84/13 K/BB ratio across 80 innings into a start against the Royals in Tampa Bay on Monday.

Trout extended the Angels’ lead in the fifth inning with a two-run homer off Merrill Kelly. He then doubled in the sixth to plate one more run. That’s back-to-back games with a home run for Trout and his 17th of the season while hitting .233/.393/.473 with 54 runs scored, 36 RBI, and seven steals across 331 plate appearances.

Neto took Merrill Kelly deep for a solo homer in the third inning, then totaled seven bases on the day with a leadoff triple in the fifth before scoring on a home run by Mike Trout. The 25-year-old shortstop is hitting .223/.325/.436 with 14 homers, 50 runs scored, 33 RBI, and 11 steals across 326 plate appearances.

Detmers continued his outstanding run of pitching with seven shutout innings against the Diamondbacks. He scattered three hits and did not issue a walk while striking out three batters. It’s his second straight start with zero walks and has allowed just one run across 20 innings over his last three outings. The 26-year-old left-hander will take a 3.68 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and a 100/24 K/BB ratio across 88 innings into a start against the Athletics in Sacramento on Sunday.

Kelly tossed a scoreless first inning, then gave up a run on two hits in the second. Zach Neto then took him deep for a solo homer in the third. The Angels brought another run in to score in the fourth before Mike Trout added two more with a home run in the fifth. Kelly would depart with two runners on and one out in the sixth at 88 pitches. One inherited runner would come in to score. Kelly finished with four strikeouts and ended his day with a 5.81 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, and a 42/28 K/BB ratio across 69 2/3 innings. He’ll face the Cardinals in St. Louis on Monday.

No other player on either team had even two hits in this one. Wetherholt has gone 18-for-50 in his last 13 games to raise his average from .234 to .259. There’s a long way to go, but he’s pretty easily the NL Rookie of the Year favorite over Sal Stewart and Nolan McLean at this point.

Pallante won for the third time in three starts this month. At 8-4, he has two more victories in 14 starts this year than he did in 31 starts last season. The biggest change from then is that he’s getting more called strikes this season, allowing him to amass a decent 19 percent strikeout rate even though he’s still not generating a bunch of whiffs. He still doesn’t project as a mixed-league guy going forward, but he’s a big reason why the Cardinals are in postseason position at the moment.
