Apparently, Smith suffered the injury while pitching earlier this week in the MLB All-Star Game or at some point during the All-Star break. No word yet on the severity of the sprain, which will determine how much time he misses. Assuming it’s on the lower-end of the spectrum, Smith should make it back at some point in early August. The 25-year-old rookie has been a revelation this season for Chicago, wrapping up the first half with a strong 4.26 ERA and 81/37 K/BB ratio across 86 2/3 innings (18 starts) in his first taste of the majors. The most logical solution for the White Sox would involve stretching out either Tyler Alexander or Mike Vasil to fill Smith’s rotation spot for a couple turns.

Caratini was forced to depart in the middle of a fifth-inning at-bat after fouling a ball off his knee. There should be an update on his status after he undergoes X-rays to rule out any fractures.

Carroll’s 394-foot blast in the sixth missed going over the wall by about a foot and would have been a homer in 20 ballparks. As is, it was his 54th triple in five big-league seasons. He’s just one behind Starling Marte and Mike Trout for first place among active players.

It was a 2-2 game when Kelly threw his final pitch in the top of the fifth, but the D-backs scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning and then five more in the sixth. Kelly improved to 3-0 in four starts this month and 8-8 overall. Still, he’s given up homers in five straight starts (22 in 103 2/3 innings overall) and posted just a 14.4 percent strikeout rate on the season. Use him at your own risk next week against the Pirates.

Jump has lost five straight starts, giving up 20 runs and seven homers over 21 2/3 innings in the process. He’s still missing plenty of bats, but not enough to make up for the homers and walks. The A’s don’t have any great options to replace him, but they still might want to send him down to regain some confidence anyway. If not, he’ll face Boston next week.

McCann isn’t playing much with Gabriel Moreno healthy and producing, but he’s gone 7-for-15 with three homers and eight RBI in four games since coming off the injured list on July 6. The D-backs used both catchers today, with Moreno DHing, and will probably keep that up from time to time until McCann cools off.

Waldschmidt’s homer was sent 426 feet to left center. He also had the game’s hardest-hit ball with his 108.6-mph single in the eighth. That topped his previous high of 107.8 mph in 38 big-league games. Waldschmidt’s exit velocity numbers haven’t been great in Triple-A or the majors this season, and his 35 percent strikeout rate during his time in the majors is really discouraging. Still, his track record suggests that he will hit, and today seems like a step in the right direction.

With superstar Bobby Witt Jr. landing on the injured list and Andrew Velazquez moving up to Kansas City to help fill the void, López heads to Triple-A Omaha to replenish the organization’s infield depth. The 30-year-old infielder hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since the 2023 campaign.

Stewart took Eduard Barzardo deep, sneaking a 369-foot fly out to the opposite field. According to Statcast, it would have been a homer in 11 of the 30 ballparks. It was Stewart’s 21st of the year, and it upped his RBI total to 74. That’s fourth in the majors and just two shy of CJ Abrams and Jordan Walker for the league lead.

The Reds scored three times in the top of the seventh to give Singer a 5-3 lead and get him a second straight win after he lost eight of his previous nine decisions. The rebound here should give him some trade value leading up to the deadline. With his 4.53 ERA, he’s not a guy a team would be excited to have starting playoff games, but he can eat innings and help a good offensive team make it to October.

Pagán has gone 3-for-3 in save chances since returning from his hamstring strain. He could be a trade candidate with the Reds likely to sell at the deadline, but his $10 million player option for 2027 figures to scare away some potential suitors.
