Kody Funderburk notched his first save of the season on Friday night, working a scoreless ninth inning to protect a three-run lead against the Padres.
It wasn’t the smoothest of innings for the 28-year-old southpaw as he allowed a leadoff walk to Gavin Sheets and a one-out walk to Jake Cronenworth that brought the tying run to the plate. He battled back though, getting Yainer Diaz on a swinging third strike and Fernando Tatis Jr. on a fly ball to right to end it. On the season, he now holds a 4.40 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and a 23/15 K/BB ratio over 28 2/3 innings. Don’t expect him to suddenly take over the closer’s role in Minnesota.

Blue Jays activated C Alejandro Kirk from the 60-day IL.
He’ll be active tonight, though the Blue Jays haven’t released their lineup yet. Kirk fractured his thumb in early April and was only 3-for-20 before going on the injured list, missing a little over two months of the season. Kirk’s ability to hit for average should keep him in the rolodex at catcher in 12-team leagues.
'Fire up' Skubal after quick recovery from injury
Returning from a remarkably quick recovery timeline, Tarik Skubal takes the mound once again this weekend. James Schiano shares what fantasy managers should expect from one of the game's true aces.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #66
Guardians recalled RHP Daniel Espino from Triple-A Columbus.
We don’t expect much in the short term considering the 5.30 ERA and 29/15 K/BB in 18 2/3 innings pitched with Columbus this year, but Espino has plenty of prospect pedigree and has averaged 97.9 mph with his fastball this year out of the bullpen. It’s certainly possible he could eventually emerge as a closer candidate in Cleveland if this is the path they choose to go with him.
  • BOS Catcher #30
Mickey Gasper is hitting leadoff for the Red Sox in Friday’s game against the Rangers.
It’s Gasper’s first leadoff appearance all year, though he did hit in the two-hole at times in May. Gasper is batting .154/.241/.231 in 29 June plate appearances, so it’s not like he’s red hot either. Jarren Duran has been dropped to fifth in the lineup as a result of this shakeup.
  • SD Right Fielder #29
Padres designated OF Bryce Johnson for assignment.
Johnson is a somewhat surprising DFA choice considering he’s been on the roster since the start of the season, but the 30-year-old is hitting .178/.229/.222 in 49 plate appearances. He’s added speed (five stolen bases) and defense, but little with the bat. The Padres will see if they can get him through waivers.
  • SD Shortstop #2
Padres activated INF Xander Bogaerts from the paternity list.
He should be back in the Padres lineup tonight against the Orioles. Fantasy managers in daily transaction leagues can put him back in their lineups as well.
  • ATL Catcher #30
Drake Baldwin (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday.
Baldwin will miss the weekend series with the Mets, but could be activated on Tuesday if all goes well. Fantasy managers who have been suffering without the services of the star catcher, who hit .303/.389/.543 with 13 homers and 38 RBI before hitting the shelf, won’t have to wait too much longer.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #18
White Sox announced LHP Anthony Kay will start Friday’s game against the Dodgers.
After the Braves and White Sox were postponed yesterday, the White Sox opted to bump back the entire rotation a day. Kay will go tonight and Sean Burke will go on Saturday. Neither is a recommended option against the Dodgers.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #74
Giants recalled RHP Ryan Walker from Triple-A Sacramento.
Walker had a 1.93 ERA in 9 1/3 innings in Sacramento, striking out seven and allowing no homers. He’s obviously not being handed the closer’s role back right away, but nobody else in San Francisco has really seized it either. Walker’s ultimately a monitor at this point in most leagues.
  • INT Right Fielder #19
Yokohama BayStars signed OF Jerar Encarnacion.
Encarnacion was DFA’ed off the Giants roster in May. The 28-year-old has hit .211/.237/.362 in 291 MLB plate appearances, but is a career .260/.359/.481 hitter with 54 homers in four seasons at the Triple-A level. He’ll look to re-establish his career overseas.
  • INT Starting Pitcher #45
Yokohama BayStars signed RHP Osvaldo Bido.
Bido was DFA’ed off the White Sox roster in May — it was his seventh organization in five months. He’ll try to re-establish himself in Japan.
