Petersen was acquired from the Braves for cash considerations back in mid-July. Since the trade, the 31-year-old hurler has posted a 6.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 19/5 K/BB ratio over 12 innings of work. He’ll add depth in the middle innings for the Marlins.

Hart will not be eligible for the Wil Card series unless he’s an injury replacement. The right-hander’s spot on the active roster has been taken by Gavin Sheets, who came off the injured list in a corresponding transaction.

Canning, 30, gets the call with Casey Mize hitting the injured list with an ankle sprain. He’ll provide some bullpen depth for the final two games of 2026.

Mize was lit up for seven runs and three homers during Friday’s loss, and it seems likely that the ankle didn’t help in that outing. He’ll assuredly miss the Wild Card series against whatever opponent San Diego faces, but there’s a decent chance his 2026 campaign is over.

The Pirates are calling Cruz’s exit precautionary, but they will have the 27-year-old talent undergo imaging to be sure there’s no structural damage. With nothing to play for — in terms of the postseason, anyway — there’s a pretty good chance Cruz won’t play in the finale, regardless.

Sheets is hitting sixth and playing first base in his return. The 30-year-old has hit .211/.313/.388 with 16 homers over his 412 plate appearances in 2026.

Ortiz suffered an injury during Friday’s game against the Cards and has dealt with various ailments as of late, and the Brewers won’t take any chances. David Hamilton will handle third base and hit ninth while Ortiz sits.

Pratt missed Friday’s game while feeling under the weather, but the 22-year-old rookie is good to go for the penultimate regular season game against the Cards.

Both starters in the Detroit-Pittsburgh game are hanging it up, and while Justin Verlander will someday be elected to Cooperstown, Yates had a heck of a career as well. He made that first start of his long career at the age of 39 on Saturday, and he finishes with a 3.35 ERA and 101 saves in his 518 appearances.

Valencia played the role of unexpected hero when he connected for a walk-off homer against Pirates closer Mason Montgomery with two outs in the ninth inning. It was his seventh career home run. He simply hasn’t stopped hitting since arriving in the majors and is now batting .344 through his first 41 games.
