Brewers manager Pat Murphy is getting a three-year extension with a club option for 2029, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports.

With Milwaukee leading the way in the NL Central, Murphy has won NL Manager of the Year both seasons since he replaced Craig Counsell at the helm of the Brewers. Whether he or the team’s front office deserves the most credit for the team exceeding expectations is a fair debate, but there’s certainly no need to mess with what’s working.

Mariners claimed RHP Isaac Mattson off waivers from the Pirates

Mattson struggled in 2026 with a 5.35 ERA in 38 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, but the 31-year-old was much better for the Pirates in 2025, posting a 2.45 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 45/19 K/BB ratio in 47 2/3 innings. The Mariners will try to help him get back to that level of production.

Orioles OF Heston Kjerstad cleared outright waivers and is becoming a free agent.

Not what either the Orioles or Kjerstad envisioned when the team drafted him with the 2nd overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. The 27-year-old was once a top 100 prospect, but his career has not been a steady progression. He missed the 2021 season with myocarditis and didn’t make his major league debut until 2023. He’s never had more than 167 MLB plate appearances in any season, but did hit .289/.337/.462 with 11 home runs and a 106 wRC+ in 333 plate appearances for Triple-A Norfolk this season. He will likely have a few suitors in free agency to see if they can reclaim some of his former prospect sheen.

Evan Carter underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right hip at the end of October to address a labral injury and a hip impingement.

Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young revealed that Carter will not be ready for the start of the 2027 season. It’s another concerning injury development for the talented 24-year-old whose body has been unable to hold up to the rigors of a full MLB season.

Nationals designated José Tena for assignment.

Just a little over two years ago, the Nationals acquired Tena from the Guardians for Lane Thomas at the trade deadline. The 25-year-old hit .242/.306/.364 with 10 home runs and 59 RBI during his tenure with the Nationals. The Nationals needed spots on their 40-man roster with the 60-day injured list players being activated on Monday, so they decided to move on from Tena.

Braves claimed LHP Mitchell Parker off waivers from the Nationals.

Parker struggled to a 6.58 ERA in 39 2/3 innings out of the bullpen in 2026, but he did post a 4.29 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 151 innings back in 2024, so the Braves obviously believe there is something they can work with. He’s currently on the 60-day injured list after undergoing elbow surgery in July, so the Nationals chose not to keep hold him on their 40-man roster.

Dusty Baker, Lou Piniella, Bruce Bochy, and Joe Maddon are all on the Hall of Fame’s Contemporary Era ballot.

The Contemporary Baseball Era Committee focuses on identifying candidates for the Hall of Fame whose greatest contributions came from 1980 to the present. Baker has a 2,183-1,862 record over 26 seasons and led his teams to 10 division titles and one World Series championship. Bochy has a 2,252-2,266 record over 28 seasons and led his teams to six division titles and four World Series championships. Piniella and Maddon both spent time managing the Tampa Bay Rays. Piniella was 1,835-1,712 as a manager and was named Manager of the Year three times, while Maddon was 1,382-1,126 and was named Manager of the Year three times as well, while managing the Cubs to their first World Series title since 1908.

White Sox claimed 3B Graham Pauley off waivers from the Marlins.

The 26-year-old Pauley hit .211/.257/.373 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 62 games for the Marlins in 2026. He will get another chance with the White Sox, but he’s a long shot to crack the MLB roster.

Orioled declined their $7.5 million team option on 1B Ryan Mountcastle.

Mountcastle was set to come off the 60-day injured list today but will now become a free agent instead. There are reports that the Orioles are still interested in bringing back the 29-year-old, but Pete Alonso’s presence in Baltimore makes Mountcastle less of an impact player. Mountcastle has not played over 125 games since 2022, so injuries have sapped a little bit of the upside he showed back in his early seasons in Baltimore.

Astros designated OF Jake Meyers for assignment.

This is all about roster flexibility. Meyers is currently on the 60-day injured list with a fractured knee that he suffered in September, but all players are set to be activated off the 60-day injured list by the end of the day, so the Astros needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. They could look to sign the 30-year-old back on a minor league deal.

Cardinals re-signed LHP Josh Fleming to a minor league contract.

Fleming began last season with the Blue Jays before signing a minor league deal with the Cubs and then another minor league deal with the Cardinals in August after he was released by the Cubs. The 30-year-old posted a 4.01 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 82/24 K/BB ratio in 112 1/3 innings at Triple-A across all three organizations.
