None of these players were expected to make a big impact in the majors this year, and most of them were brought on for minor-league contracts. Jarvis was DFA’ed after the season and sent outright to Triple-A Reno. He carried a 5.73 ERA in 22 innings with the Snakes last year, but has a 3.69 career major league ERA and is probably the most likely of the crew to make MLB appearances this year.

No word yet on how long the 32-year-old southpaw will be shelved so, but with the regular season winding down, he may not have enough time to make it back before the playoffs begin. Ty Johnson was promoted from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move to take his place in the Rays’ bullpen.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues for the 24-year-old hurler. Johnson was having a very strong season at Triple-A Durham, registering a 3.03 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and an 84/25 K/BB ratio across 62 1/3 innings in his 21 appearances (10 starts). He’ll give Kevin Cash another weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

The Rays needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the arrival of Ty Johnson on Saturday and unfortunately Dunn drew the short straw this time. There’s a decent chance he slides through waivers unclaimed and continues to function as extra infield depth for the Rays.

It’s unclear if Jenkins is sitting just because the Twins are facing a left-hander, or if they just wanted to give the 21-year-old outfielder a breather after starting in seven straight games. He has struggled at the dish thus far, slashing .130/.286/.304 with one homer, three RBI, one stolen base and a 6/5 K/BB ratio over 28 plate appearances to begin his MLB career.

The 29-year-old outfielder will get a breather in this one with veteran right-hander Max Scherzer on the hill for the Jays. John Rave will draw a rare start in center field in his place and will bat seventh for the Royals.

The dynamic 29-year-old outfielder started and hit in the middle of the Orioles’ lineup in each of his first three games since coming over from the Mets. He’ll get a breather here though before likely returning for Sunday’s series finale. Colton Cowser will start in his place in center field and bat ninth against Red Sox’ right-hander Sonny Gray.

The 23-year-old had started every other game during the week — either at third base or second base — but he’ll get a breather in this one with right-hander Dustin May on the bump for the Brewers. Matt McLain will start at second base and will bat ninth for the Reds.

Lowe will take a seat in this one with left-hander Yusei Kikuchi taking the mound for the Angels. Nick Gonzales will cover second base and will bat fifth for the Pirates on Saturday evening in Pittsburgh.

Clark has been a fixture in the Tigers’ lineup in center field since arriving from Triple-A Toledo, but he’ll get a breather in this one after playing in both halves of Friday’s doubleheader and with tough left-hander Parker Messick toeing the slab for the Guardians. The 21-year-old has impressed in his first exposure to big league pitching, slashing .265/.331/.434 with a pair of homers, 16 RBI and two stolen bases in his first 126 plate appearances. Zach McKinstry will start in his place in center field and bat eighth for the Tigers.

The 31-year-old southpaw has been shelved since the end of June due to a triceps strain. He has finally made tangible strides toward a return to the Nationals’ bullpen though and after a couple of appearances in a minor league setting, he could be ready to be activated by the end of next week.
