Alex Bregman is at third base and batting fifth on Tuesday as Team USA squares off against Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic final.
Team USA manager Mark DeRosa will turn to Bregman at the hot corner over Gunnar Henderson, who crushed a game-tying solo homer during Sunday’s semifinal win over the Dominican Republic, to face Venezuela lefty Eduardo Rodriguez. The other notable changes here for matchup reasons are Byron Buxton in centerfield over Pete Crow-Armstrong and Will Smith getting another turn at catcher over Cal Raleigh. Here’s the full lineup: Bobby Witt Jr. (SS), Bryce Harper (1B), Aaron Judge (RF), Kyle Schwarber (DH), Bregman (3B), Roman Anthony (LF), Smith (C), Brice Turang (2B) and Buxton (CF).

Blue Jays recalled RHP Chad Dallas from Triple-A Buffalo.
Dallas will follow opener Braydon Fisher for a bulk relief appearance against the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday in place of injured veteran Max Scherzer (back). The 25-year-old rookie tossed 3 2/3 innings during his lone appearance for the Blue Jays earlier this month.
Cholowsky, Emerson top No. 1 pick prospects
Eric Samulski and Jim Callis break down the favorites to go first overall in the 2026 MLB Draft, naming UCLA's Roch Cholowsky, high schooler Grady Emerson, and Georgia Tech's Vahn Lackey as frontrunners.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #31
Blue Jays placed RHP Max Scherzer on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 14, with back spasms.
Scherzer was scheduled to start Wednesday’s contest against the Red Sox at Fenway Park after reaching the 3,500 strikeout milestone his last time out against the Phillies. It’s fair to wonder whether Toronto should continue committing a rotation spot to Scherzer since he’s posted a calamitous 10.23 ERA and 13/12 K/BB ratio across 22 innings this season. The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer is likely to miss at least a couple weeks. It’ll be Chad Dallas coming up to take the ball for a bulk relief appearance against Boston in his place.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #26
Nolan McLean allowed only an unearned run over seven innings and struck out nine as the Mets downed the Reds 9-1on Wednesday.
The run came in the third after a Mark Vientos error and a double to left that a better outfielder than Juan Soto would have caught. It’s just McLean’s fourth victory, though it’s the 10th time this season he’s allowed two runs or fewer. With nine strikeouts today, he’s currently tied for seventh in the majors at 97 on the year. He’s due for home starts against the Cubs and Phillies next week.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #40
Nick Lodolo surrendered seven runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Mets.
Lodolo should have gotten through the third scoreless, thanks to a baserunning mistake from Luis Torrens, but Sal Stewart couldn’t hold on to a throw at third, and the Mets went on to score three times in the inning. The other four runs came in the fifth, which featured four singles and a double to the wall in center that Noelvi Marte should have caught or at least made an attempt on. Lodolo averaged a season-low 93.2 mph with his sinker today, which certainly didn’t help matters, but he was also unlucky to give up seven hits on his curve and changeup without ever allowing a hard-hit ball on either. His ERA is up to 6.12, but the Reds will almost certainly stick with him and start him against the Brewers next week.
  • NYM 3rd Baseman #19
Bo Bichette singled three times, walked and scored three runs against the Reds on Wednesday.
It’s Bichette’s sixth straight multihit game. He’s 14-for-26 during the stretch, raising his average from .227 to 254 and his OPS from .607 to .677. He was actually as low as .210 with a .531 OPS on this day one month ago.
  • NYM Catcher #4
Francisco Alvarez went 3-for-5 with an RBI against the Reds on Wednesday.
Alvarez hit three balls at least 107 mph today, topping out at a season-high 112.3 mph on his second single. He’s 8-for-25 with a homer in seven games since coming off the injured list last week.
  • CIN Shortstop #2
Edwin Arroyo went 0-for-4 from the leadoff spot Wednesday against the Mets.
Arroyo doubled for his first extra-base hit as a major leaguer last night, but he’s batting just .205/.273/.231 through 44 plate appearances. There might have been a path for him to stick around in the majors following Elly De La Cruz’s return, but it involved him hitting better than this.
  • SEA Left Fielder #1
Mariners optioned OF Curtis Washington Jr. to High-A Everett.
Washington Jr. was called up because he was geographically the closest outfield prospect who could make it in time for the game last night. The 26-year-old will head back to the lower minors, but it was likely a very special day for him.
  • SEA Right Fielder #9
Mariners recalled INF/OF Connor Joe from Triple-A Tacoma.
Curtis Washington Jr. was with the team for one day just because his High-A club was closest to the Mariners geographically. Joe will now be up for another week or so while Randy Arozarena (hamstring) is on the IL. Joe is hitting just .182/.308/.333 in 39 plate appearances this season.
  • NYY Left Fielder #24
Jasson Dominguez (tooth) is starting in right field and batting fifth against the White Sox on Wednesday.
Dominguez wasn’t in the starting lineup yesterday after having a tooth pulled, but he’ll be right back in there today. The 23-year-old is going to get a long leash with Aaron Judge (ribs), Trent Grisham (oblique), and Giancarlo Stanton (calf) on the injured list for the Yankees. He should be added in most league types if he remains on your waiver wire.
