Mets selected the contract of RHP Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Syracuse.

Edwards will look to fill in some innings for the big club after Christian Scott forced two Mets long relievers to pitch on Thursday by not getting out of the second. Edwards has essentially functioned as an up-and-down reliever after two successful years in Washington in 2022 and 2023 — this is his fourth team since then and he’s recorded just five major league appearances in that timespan. He had a 5.29 ERA and 1.47 WHIP for Syracuse in four starts.

Blue Jays purchased the contract of Rudy Martin Jr. from Triple-A Buffalo.

It’s a great story as it will be Martin’s MLB debut at age 30 after 12 years in the minors. There’s little fantasy impact to be found here — Martin could steal some bases but doesn’t figure to find regular playing time.

Blue Jays designated OF Jesús Sánchez for assignment.

The 28-year-old has been worth negative-one BBWAR this year while hitting .260/.318/.416 with eight homers and a stolen base in 299 plate appearances.
Sánchez missed about a month with an ankle sprain at the end of June continuing in to July. He still has some power, but his speed declined this year (one stolen base compared to 13 in 2025) and his defense has been abysmal. It’s possible he’s claimed on waivers. He is arbitration eligible next offseason, but it would be surprising if a team wanted to pay him more than $6.8 million he made this year.

Mets recalled RHP Jack Weisenburger from Triple-A Syracuse.

Weisenburger has a 2.08 ERA in 4 1/3 innings with the Mets this year, will work low-leverage relief innings, and sounds like a tasty German meal. What’s not to love? He takes Chris Devenski’s spot on the roster.

Mets designated RHP Chris Devenski for assignment.

Called up on August 28, Devenski had a 13.50 ERA in 5 1/3 innings with the Mets this year. The 35-year-old will likely clear waivers and be outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse. After that he’ll get to decide if he wants to stay with the organization.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said the team is planning to activate Dansby Swanson (oblique) off the 10-day injured list next weekend in Cincinnati.

He’ll go on a short rehab assignment to Triple-A Iowa and then return to close out the series and be ready for the playoffs. The Cubs have mostly played Pedro Ramírez while Swanson has been sidelined, but $100 million shortstops will be lineup fixtures and Ramírez will likely see his role reduced after hitting .192/.259/.342 with three homers and zero stolen bases over his last 20 games.

Yankees recalled RHP Bradley Hanner from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He allowed four runs over three innings of work in his first stint with the club this year. Hanner will likely be back in a low-leverage role.

Rafael Flores Jr. is batting fourth and playing first base for the Pirates against the Cubs on Friday.

It’s his eighth appearance as a first baseman this year, but probably one of the last with Ryan O’Hearn activated off the injured list. Nevertheless, Flores has slugged .549 in his last 23 games and has worked his way into more playing time at catcher.

Andrew Fischer hit his 47th homer of the season for Double-A Biloxi on Thursday.

It’s the most homers hit by a minor-leaguer this century, and the fifth-most dating back to 1963’s creation of the player development contract. He has 27 bombs in 69 games with Biloxi. Fischer, now the fifth-rated prospect on MLB Pipeline for the Brewers, has some swing-and-miss but the light-tower power makes him a very intriguing fantasy prospect.

Pirates optioned INF/OF Ronny Simon to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Simon has hit .281/.324/.313 in limited time with the Pirates this year, but loses his roster spot to Ryan O’Hearn coming off the injured list. He’ll likely be the first player called up if the Pirates lose someone else to injury over the final weeks of the season.

Pirates activated 1B/OF Ryan O’Hearn from the 10-day injured list.

Pittsburgh’s lineup is back to full strength as they try to keep pace with the NL Wild Card leaders. O’Hearn can be plugged back in to the lineup in daily transaction leagues and seems like he’ll be safe to use in the final few weeks of the season.
