Cardinals recalled 2B César Prieto from Triple-A Memphis

Prieto is hitting .311/.357/.566 in 28 Triple-A games with six home runs and 19 runs scored. He has just a 90 mph average exit velocity and 40 percent hard-hit rate, so the underlying metrics aren’t supporting that level of slugging, especially with a 57 percent groundball rate. The 27-year-old will most likely just be a bench bat for now.

Astros recalled RHP Kai-Wei Teng from Triple-A Sugar Land.

He’s been a spot starter at times this year, and with Ethan Pecko and Cristian Javier in the rotation Teng probably isn’t a sure-fire bet to remain in the pen. But for now, replacing Bryan King, it appears he’ll be part of the relief mix.

Astros optioned LHP Bryan King to Triple-A Sugar Land.

King allowed five earned runs yesterday as part of Los Angeles’ 18-3 blowout win. With King throwing 37 pitches, he was simply exchanged for a fresh arm. The unsightly game raised his season ERA to 4.75.

Reds optioned RHP Zach Maxwell to Triple-A Louisville

Maxwell appeared in two games since his August 17 call up and allowed one earned run in three innings. Tony Santillan’s return from the injured list left the Reds having to option someone and they picked Maxwell.

Reds activated Tony Santillan from the 15-day injured list.

He’ll return to the late game Reds bullpen group. Santillan may still have saves ahead of him if Emilio Pagán falters again, but it appears unlikely at this point. The 29-year old returns to a 5.23 ERA in 31 innings with the Reds so far this season.

Yankees recalled INF/OF Max Schuemann from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Schuemann, now 29, hit .194/.333/.361 for the Yankees in 87 plate appearances earlier in the year. He’s hitting .256/.385/.402 for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 145 plate appearances.

Yankees placed INF Ryan McMahon on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 20, with a left thumb sprain.

Jose Caballero will likely be part of the hot corner solution for the Yankees in McMahon’s absence. McMahon is hitting .216/.282/.367 in 306 plate appearances this year with 10 homers.

Sam Antonacci is not in Chicago’s starting lineup against the Mets on Friday.

He sits against LHP Sean Manaea. Antonacci has started against LHPs here or there — he’s not in a strict platoon — but he’s hitting .225/.326/.263 against them this year so the White Sox are doing your fantasy team a favor.

Orioles recalled RHP Anthony Nunez from Triple-A Norfolk.

He has a 4.60 ERA in 40 appearances with the Orioles this year and will return to the low-leverage mix after a few lovely weeks in the Norfolk area.

Orioles designated RHP Albert Suárez for assignment.

This happened on May 2, and the Orioles wound up keeping Suárez and selecting his contract on May 19. It happened again on May 24, and he elected free agency, then re-signed with the Orioles a day later. What we’re saying is: Suárez can be DFAed, but he will eternally live on this roster anyway.

Rays POBO Erik Neander said RHP Manuel Rodríguez (elbow) will be activated off the injured list over the weekend.

Rodríguez has been on rehab assignment after undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. This is a pretty quick return from surgery, but the Rays are apparently excited about his progress despite a 10.50 ERA for Triple-A Durham on rehab.
