Marcelo Mayer is not in the lineup on Wednesday against the Rays as he deals with neck and back spasms.

The Red Sox don’t seem worried about him needing an IL stint, but we have seen many players head to the injured list after a battle with back spasms. It would be unfortunate for Mayer, who has battled multiple injuries over his brief MLB career and was slashing .286/.323/.429 with one home run and six RBI over his last six games. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will start at shortstop and bat eighth with Andruw Monasterio at second base and hitting ninth.

Marlins acquired RHP Victor Vodnik from the Rockies for INF Connor Norby and RHP Aiden May.

Vodnik heads to Miami as middle relief depth behind closer Pete Fairbanks after posting an underwhelming 5.25 ERA and 26/19 K/BB ratio across 36 innings for the Rockies this season. He’ll undoubtedly benefit from leaving Coors Field’s high-octane offensive environment in the rear view mirror.

Rockies acquired INF Connor Norby and RHP Aiden May from the Marlins for RHP Victor Vodnik.

Norby gets a fresh start in Colorado after seeming to fall out of favor in Miami, hitting .205 with four homers and six steals in 233 plate appearances before being demoted back in late June. The 26-year-old could benefit from a change of scenery, but we’re getting further away from when he was a notable prospect with the Orioles.

Orioles acquired OF Christian Franklin from the Nationals for RHP Joe Glassey.

The 26-year-old Franklin had slipped to .249/.375/.360 in Triple-A this year after finishing at .290/.382/.427 at the same level last year. He lacks the power one wants from a left fielder and the glove required to play center regularly, but he wouldn’t embarrass himself as a major league reserve.

Nationals acquired RHP Joe Glassey from the Orioles for OF Christian Franklin.

The 25-year-old Glassey, who was signed as an undrafted free agent two years ago, had a 2.64 ERA and a 53/8 K/BB in 30 2/3 innings out of the pen this year. He was just promoted to Double-A, so all except the last two of those innings came in High-A ball. He’d probably need to add a tick or two to his fastball in order to make it in the majors.

Guardians acquired 1B Nathaniel Lowe from the Reds for RHP Alejandro Rivera.

Lowe represents a strong depth addition for Cleveland at DH as they attempt to push some chips towards the metaphorical center of the table and make another playoff push. The 31-year-old has played mostly against right-handed starters, hitting .266/.341/.480 with 12 homers in 276 plate appearances for the Reds this season.

Reds acquired INF Juan Brito from the Guardians for cash.

Brito winds up in Cincinnati after being jettisoned from Cleveland’s 40-man roster earlier on Monday. The 24-year-old infielder was a notable prospect just a couple years ago before hitting .177 across 56 plate appearances in the big leagues earlier this year.

Diamondbacks acquired OF Lars Nootbaar from the Cardinals for RHP Daniel Eagen and LHP Sandro Santana.

Nootbaar heads to Arizona as a quality option against right-handed starters and won’t reach free agency until 2028. The 28-year-old corner outfielder has hit .234/.333/.354 with three homers and one steal in 183 plate appearances for the Cardinals since making his season debut back in early June.

Diamondbacks transferred RHP Zac Gallen to the 60-day injured list.

It’s merely a procedural move as Gallen is going to be sidelined until the late stages of the second half due to an elbow injury. The 31-year-old resumed a throwing program last week but remains without a definitive return timeline.

Cardinals acquired LHP Caleb Ferguson from the Cardinals for international bonus pool space.

Ferguson remains in the NL Central after posting a serviceable 4.01 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 22/11 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings for Cincinnati this season. He’ll operate in middle relief for St. Louis.

Cubs acquired RHP Clay Holmes and OF Tyrone Taylor from the Mets for INF Jefferson Rojas.

Holmes shores up Chicago’s starting rotation depth issues, joining veteran Kevin Gausman as the club’s big-time trade deadline moves. The 33-year-old impending free agent is on the cusp of returning to the majors after fracturing his fibula back in mid-May. He’s looked sharp in a pair of recent minor league rehab starts and should be ready to make his Chicago debut later this week.
