Alejandro Kirk is not in the lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Yankees.

No surprise with Kirk sitting out Saturday’s afternoon affair following Friday night’s series opener. The 27-year-old backstop went 3-for-3 with two RBI and reached base safely in all four of his plate appearances in his return from the injured list on Friday. He missed the previous 10 weeks recovering from thumb surgery. It’ll be rookie Brandon Valenzuela handling the catching duties in this one.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday night that Shohei Ohtani will be away from the team on Friday for paternity leave.

The club hasn’t officially placed Ohtani on the paternity list as the 31-year-old superstar is expected to return to the club before the weekend is through. They’ll play shorthanded for a day or two while Ohtani is away.

Bryan Reynolds was a late scratch from the Pirates’ starting lineup on Friday night due to left groin discomfort.

He’s considered day-to-day. Esmerlyn Valdez replaced Reynolds in Friday’s lineup in left field and he’ll bat seventh against Rockies’ left-hander Kyle Freeland.

Teoscar Hernández (hamstring) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Oklahoma City next week.

The 33-year-old slugger made it through a live batting practice session on Thursday without any issues and is creeping closer to a return. He has been shelved since May 30 due to a Grade 1 hamstring strain.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts announced Friday that left-hander Blake Snell (elbow) is close to throwing his first bullpen session.

Snell is in the process of recovering from surgery to remove bone chips from his pitching elbow. He still has plenty of his throwing progression to go through, but if all goes according to plan and he’s able to avoid setbacks, Snell could be ready to rejoin the Dodgers’ rotation shortly after the All-Star break.

Edwin Díaz (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday.

Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts said afterwards that the session went well and that Díaz will continue to ramp up. He’s still got a ways to go before he’s cleared to face live hitters and will ultimately require a couple of minor league rehab appearances before he’s ready to return to the Dodgers’ bullpen. He’s not expected back until after the All-Star break.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that Will Smith will receive a cortisone injection in his neck to address the discomfort that he has been having.

Smith is eligible to return from the injured list, but it doesn’t sound like he’s close to being ready just yet. Dalton Rushing will continue to handle the bulk of the catching duties while Smith is shelved.

Luke Raley (flu) remains out of the Mariners’ starting lineup on Friday night against the Red Sox.

It’s the fourth straight game that Raley has missed while feeling under the weather, though with left-hander Ranger Suarez on the mound for the Red Sox he was unlikely to start on Friday night anyways. He’s still considered day-to-day.

Julio Rodriguez (hamstring) returned to the Mariners’ starting lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Red Sox.

The 25-year-old superstar was held out of action on Thursday due to a hamstring spasm. He’s feeling much improved after the day off though and is right back in center field and batting third for the M’s against Ranger Suarez and the Red Sox on Friday evening in Seattle.

Marcelo Mayer was held out of the Red Sox’ lineup for the second straight game on Friday night due to illness.

It doesn’t sound like Mayer is going to require a trip to the injured list, but he’s still feeling a bit under the weather on Friday. Andruw Monasterio will start at second base and bat ninth for the Red Sox while Isiah Kiner-Falefa slides over to cover shortstop once again.

Vaughn Grissom is not in the Angels’ starting lineup for Friday evening’s showdown against the Athletics.

The Angels appear to be easing Grissom back into action, as he started two straight games after coming off the injured list on Wednesday. Expect him to be back in there on Saturday. Nolan Schanuel is at first base and batting second for the Halos against opposing left-hander Jeffrey Springs on Friday evening in West Sacramento.
