ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Lions TE Sam LaPorta (herniated disc) was fully cleared for training camp.

LaPorta underwent surgery last year for a herniated disc, ending his 2025 season early. The surgery seems to have fixed the issue as Fowler reports the 25-year-old was “fully cleared earlier this month.” With training camp coming up, this is a good sign for LaPorta to be a full participant. The Lions will need him healthy to learn the offense under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing before the season starts.
Target AFC South in Coach of the Year markets
Vaughn Dalzell shares why he's targeting a "curveball" pick in this year's NFL Coach of the Year market, where he's passing on favorites such as John Harbaugh, Jesse Minter and Robert Saleh.

LaPorta’s hip issue no longer appears to be a concern. The 25-year-old has continued practicing as the week progresses. He was out there catching passes from QB Jared Goff during Friday’s scrimmage. LaPorta is a locked-in TE1, playing in what should be one of the NFL’s highest-scoring offenses this season.

The Lions are retaining “all” of last year’s play-calling verbiage, and “it was on Drew Petzing to learn the offense,” not the other way around. Goff apparently “had as much of a hand in getting Petzing familiar with the offense as the offensive staff did.” Mays believes these developments speak to the command, agency and autonomy that Goff possesses at this stage in his career. We agree. For those who were concerned about the Lions scrapping the tactics that coach Dan Campbell employed as the Lions’ play caller in Weeks 10-18 last year, it sounds like those concepts aren’t going anywhere. Will Petzing be allowed to add his own elements to that playbook? Yes, we assume so. At the end of the day, this year’s offense could look a lot like last year’s fantasy-friendly unit, though. Draft accordingly.

LaPorta mysteriously missed practice on Wednesday. Lions HC Dan Campbell told reporters Thursday that the 25-year-old tight end is dealing with a hip injury. They’re letting him rest. Campbell told reporters he doesn’t believe it’s a long-term injury and that LaPorta could be ready for the start of the regular season, but he isn’t sure. Already coming off a back injury that required season-ending surgery last year, LaPorta has picked up another red flag with a preseason injury.
  • DET Tight End #87
Just last week, we received word that LaPorta has been having a “terrific” training camp. He suffered a season-ending back injury last year, which ultimately required surgery. While the surprise absence is somewhat concerning, this could simply be LaPorta taking a veteran rest day in the middle of the week. This is worth tracking, but not worth worrying about at this time.
  • DET Tight End #87
LaPorta, operating over the middle as a trusted target for Jared Goff, has shown “just how much Detroit missed him the second half of the 2025 season after he suffered a back injury,” Twentyman said. “He’s been terrific throughout the start of camp. In an early practice team period, Goff found LaPorta down the left seam for a big gain down to the nine-yard-line. The next play was a touchdown pass to LaPorta over the middle. That’s been a common occurrence all through camp.” LaPorta managed just 40 receptions in 2025 while missing eight games with a lingering back issue that required surgery in November. He set career marks last year in receiving success rate (69 percent) and yards per catch (12.2). LaPorta was targeted on 21 percent of his routes, the second highest mark on the team.

It’s a good sign. There’s no reason for the Lions to push LaPorta at this point after having surgery on his back in November. Detroit is taking the cautious approach with the 25-year-old tight end, holding him out of positional and team drills. Ideally, LaPorta will be ready for next month’s training camp.

This is great news. LaPorta was active for “about 30 minutes of walkthroughs to begin practice.” LaPorta is not yet ready to participate in positional drills and team drills, but this is still an important first step. Earlier today, Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters that the team is going to ask a lot of LaPorta this season. Hopefully, LaPorta is ready to go by the time training camp rolls around in July.

Campbell made an off-hand comment during an answer about RB Jahmyr Gibbs, saying the team will be asking a lot of their skill position players and included LaPorta in the list. While the 25-year-old tight end still isn’t practicing after undergoing back surgery in November, Campbell isn’t forgetting about him. His tone was a stark contrast to how he spoke about other injured players and that alone is a good sign for LaPorta’s recovery.

LaPorta underwent back surgery in November and is still in recovery. The Lions’ offseason program includes organized team activities and a mandatory minicamp, sporadically taking place from May 27th to June 17th. A prior report indicated that the Lions hope to have LaPorta on the field when training camp begins in July. That could still happen, though he may need to be eased in after the extended absence. Things appear to be on the right track for his regular season readiness, though.

Specifically, Petzing ran with much heavier personnel than the Lions are used to seeing and have run a lot of 13-personnel (three tight ends, one running back) since 2023. We doubt the Lions will go quite that big quite that often — that means one of Jameson Williams or Amon-Ra St. Brown is off the field — but we do think that Trey McBride’s success under Petzing generally augurs well for LaPorta in 2026. Of course, given that LaPorta (back) seems questionable for training camp after surgery, we don’t exactly know that the Lions will be able to pull this off. LaPorta seems like a boom-bust pick in Best Ball drafts from where we sit in January.

NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reports the Falcons plan for QB Michael Penix Jr. “to start eventually.”

Wolfe added that head coach Kevin Stefanski does not want “an imaginary timeline” for Penix (knee) returning; the Falcons want to see him practice more and avoid rushing him back. The next week of practices will show if he is ready or if Tua Tagovailoa will be the “placeholder” for Week 1. Tagovailoa’s struggles seem to have made it a foregone conclusion that Penix will start when ready this season as the Falcons evaluate whether or not they will need to draft a quarterback in 2027.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said, “the fact that we didn’t put [DT Nnamdi Madubuike] on IR means that we would expect him to be able to contribute sooner than that.”

DeCosta added, “I’m probably more bullish on that right now than I even have been.” Madubuike’s 2025 season was cut short due to a neck injury and the 28-year-old has been working his way back since. He has been participating in individual drills but was not seen participating in team drills by the media in training camp. The Ravens chose to keep Madubuike off injured reserve, indicating they expect him to return less than four games into the regular season. The former third-round pick is a two-time Pro-Bowler and a key piece of the Ravens’ defensive line when healthy.

Cowboys signed QB Joe Milton to their practice squad.

Milton initially made the 53-man roster but was let go after the initial wave of waiver claims. He went unclaimed when waivers ran Tuesday and now returns to the Cowboys on the practice squad. With Sam Howell winning the QB2 job, Milton will be QB3 heading into the season.

Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said he is “optimistic” about reaching a contract extension with Lamar Jackson.

DeCosta also said he wants to get a deal done as soon as possible. Jackson currently has two seasons left on his five-year, $260 million contract. His cap hit for the 2026 season is a comfortable $34.4 million. That number balloons to $84.3 million next year. A new deal would help the Ravens spread Jackson’s cap hit over multiple seasons. Jackson is no longer one of the 10 highest-paid quarterbacks by average annual value, so he should also want to get a new deal on the books. It makes sense for both sides to come to an agreement sooner rather than later, ideally before the start of the season.

Aaron Rodgers said Roman Wilson had a “fantastic camp.”

It was a bit of a compliment sandwich, with Rodgers opening his comments by mentioning a route Wilson screwed up early in camp and again today. Rodgers did, however, say Wilson will have to play a big role for the team and that he has the utmost confidence in him. Rodgers is infamously punitive to his younger players, and the Steelers have second-round rookie Germie Bernard behind Wilson on the depth chart. Wilson is firmly ahead of Bernard for now, but one mistake during the regular season could flip the WR3 role in an instant.

Nick Bosa (knee) said he is confident he will play in Week 1 against the Rams.

Bosa suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 last year and is still working his way back. He was back on the practice field today and is on track to play in Australia versus the Rams next week. Bosa got off to a hot start last year, logging a sack in each of his first two games before exiting Week 3 a few snaps in. If he can return to form quickly, the 49ers defense should take a step forward this year.

Ravens signed Chuma Edoga, formerly of the Jaguars.

Edoga appeared in 14 games for the Jags last year and made two starts. He has 25 career starts across both tackle spots and left guard. Edoga will be a versatile depth option for the Ravens.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reports “there’s currently optimism” from the Bills that Khalil Shakir will play in Week 1 against the Texans.

Shakir has been held out of practice for multiple weeks with an undisclosed injury. He has gotten some work off to the side, though it’s becoming more concerning with each day he fails to work in with the team. According to Zenitz, the team is simply being cautious with Shakir. We’ll learn more about his ailment when the first official injury report comes out next week. Like the Bills, fantasy managers should take a cautious approach with Shakir in the final week of drafts.

Jets hosted Justin Tucker for a workout.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero notes that the Jets hosted a group workout and are exploring all options at kicker. They already claimed Blake Grupe and re-signed Jason Sanders to their practice squad this week. Tucker worked out for multiple teams last year after serving a 10-game suspension for violating the team’s personal conduct policy. He was never signed and hasn’t kicked in a game since the 2024 season, which was the worst of his career by far. Tucker made just 73.3 percent of his field goal tries.

Mike Evans (abductor) returned to practice Wednesday.

Evans missed the bulk of training camp with quad, groin, and abductor injuries. The team took a cautious approach to his practice regimen during the offseason, and it seems to have paid off with him back on the field today. Evans’ status on the 49ers’ practice report next week will be one of the bigger storylines for the 49ers, but all signs point to him being healthy for Week 1. Fantasy managers can keep drafting him as a low-end WR2 for the final week of the summer.
