Michael Penix said his doctor told him he has “an amazing ACL” and he should “never have any more knee problems for the rest of your career.”

This is not parody, somehow. Penix infamously tore his right ACL twice while in college and then suffered a partial tear in his left ACL last year. The totally real doctor was presumably referring to his left knee. Penix, who hasn’t participated in team drills during training camp, later added that the only thing he can’t do in practice right now is take a hit. Last we checked, that is a major part of the game of football. Meanwhile, Tua Tagovailoa is slated to start the team’s preseason opener versus Denver later this week. Penix doesn’t seem to have much of a shot at being the Week 1 starter given his slow recovery, but the leash on Tua will be short. Penix remains the favorite to start more games this year, though only by a narrow margin.

The final stat line looks more impressive when you consider Penix started the game 1-of-5 passing with an interception, settling into the game from there to go on to complete 17 of his final 20 pass attempts. As was the case during his rookie season, Penix leaned on his top option through the air, feeding Drake London 10 targets that the talented receiver parlayed into a gaudy 194 yards, with no other pass-catcher surpassing the 19 yards receiving of running back Bijan Robinson. The Falcons improve to 1-2 on the young season while handing the Packers their first home opener loss in 14 years. Penix has all the look of an upside QB2 and deserves streaming consideration ahead of a road matchup with the Saints in Week 4.

Tagovailoa, fighting injuries for much of the offseason, missed Atlanta’s first two games with an oblique issue. He’ll return just in time to serve as backup to Michael Penix, who’s returning from a 2025 ACL injury. Penix is set to start Thursday night against a Packers defense allowing the ninth lowest adjusted yards per pass attempt.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix will make his first start since Week 11 of last season, when he suffered a torn ACL against the Panthers. If he plays well enough, Penix will have a chance to secure the starting job for the remainder of the season, but he will have Tua Tagovailoa looming in the background once he is fully recovered from his oblique injury. Penix has struggled early in his career, throwing for 2,757-12-6 in 14 career games while completing just 59.6 percent of his passes. It seems unlikely that he will hold onto the job for the remaining 15 games of the season, but he’ll get the first legitimate crack at it after the Falcons were forced to start Cooper Rush for the first two weeks of the season. Penix shouldn’t be viewed as anything more than a low-end QB2 for fantasy purposes on Thursday night against the Packers.
  • ATL Quarterback #1
Stefanski said the team will “work through what that means for this week.” Time will tell whether or not that means Tagovailoa has a chance to play in Week 3 against the Packers on Thursday night, as the Falcons have a number of ways they can go at QB this week after another disastrous outing by Cooper Rush. Tagovailoa did not log a practice last week, but Michael Penix (knee) was a full participant. It would be fair to assume that Penix is closer to returning than Tua, but we’ll see where things stand when the team releases its estimated injury report later today.
  • ATL Quarterback #18
With the Falcons set to play on Thursday night, Stefanski will have little time to prepare his starter for the week. It’s hard to imagine the team going back to Cooper Rush after back-to-back disastrous starts to open the season, which could pave the way for rookie UDFA Jack Strand to make the start of Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) and Michael Penix Jr. (knee) still aren’t ready to go. Strand completed 8-of-15 passes for 59 yards and an interception in his first taste of NFL action. Stefanski did say he had a “decent idea” of who he thinks he will be starting this week, so we’ll likely have our answer soon.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Per Schefter and Ian Rapoport, Penix is the team’s preferred starter and is nearing a return. Once he is finally ready to suit up, the job is his. They also note that the Falcons won’t cut Tua Tagovailoa, even once the team has four healthy quarterbacks. There is a possibility that a team wants to trade for Tua ahead of the midseason deadline, though we’re skeptical that there’s much of a market for him after this disastrous start to the season.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Cooper Rush will draw a second consecutive start under center and will be backed up by undrafted free agent rookie Jack Strand, with Tua Tagovailoa not yet ready to return from an oblique injury. Penix is expected to enter the starting lineup once cleared to return to game action as he continues his ramp-up process following a torn ACL suffered in 2025.
  • ATL Quarterback #13
Rush is taking all of the first-team reps with the Falcons in Friday’s practice, and according to Rapoport, sources familiar with the situation expect Rush to get the nod on Sunday. With Rush under center, all Falcons pass-catchers receive a substantial downgrade after he struggled to move the ball in Week 1 against the Steelers. Fantasy managers hoping Drake London and Kyle Pitts can be of some value against a Panthers defense that allowed 269 yards and two passing TDs to the Bears last week should approach both players with caution. London is best trusted as more of a WR2, while Pitts, who saw one target on 21 routes last week, shouldn’t be viewed as anything more than a boom-or-bust TE2 in what figures to be a run-heavy game for the Falcons.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Fowler said Penix, still recovering from his 2025 ACL injury, “wants to be fully confident before stepping onto the field. And my understanding is the Falcons are leaving the comfort level part of his recovery up to him.” “Penix is coming off his third ACL reconstruction, which is a lot of ACL reconstructions,” ESPN’s Dan Graziano added. “I believe it takes a lot of mental work to convince yourself it’s OK to go back out there and play. If Penix needs more time, I’m sure the Falcons will give it to him, though I believe we will see him on the field at some point this season.” That would leave Tua Tagovailoa as the team’s presumed starter if Tua can play through the oblique strain that sidelined him in Week 1 against the Steelers. If Tua can’t go, the Falcons could be forced to start Cooper Rush for another game or two. Rush, who had the lowest drop back EPA of any QB in Week 1, makes Drake London and Kyle Pitts iffy starts in 12-team fantasy formats.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
It sounds like Penix isn’t comfortable just yet on his knee, but it should be sooner rather than later, and the original time frame here was Week 2 or 3. The plan will definitely be to start Penix when he is healthy. Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski offered zero help on the situation on Monday; we’ll probably get a better update from the Falcons on Wednesday. It’s worth noting that Penix did practice in full all last week, but this may be more of a mental hurdle than a physical one.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports DJ Moore (shoulder) is expected to play in Week 3 against the Chargers.

Moore suffered an AC joint sprain in Week 2 and did not return to that game. He got in two limited practices this week before being listed as questionable. He will suit up versus the Chargers, though it’s unclear how much the shoulder issue will affect him. Moore would normally be a solid WR2 option in this spot, but fantasy managers will likely want to treat him as a WR3 until we see how the shoulder injury impacts his play and usage.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said he does not expect “an imminent return for Josh Jacobs.”

Jacob’s current time on the Commissioner’s Exempt List is expected to count as time served toward an eventual suspension. Rapoport added, “If they get to the point where it’s five games, six games, maybe eight games, that might be when you’re looking at a potential return for Josh Jacobs.” The NFL is currently trying to obtain video footage of the incident from the Hobart/Lawrence police department. The victim in Jacobs’ case requested that it be sealed by a judge for privacy reasons, but that request was denied. Now the NFL has filed a FOIA request to obtain it. It seems like they won’t make any decisions on Jacobs’ suspension until they have viewed the video, which could take several more weeks to resolve.

NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reports Keon Coleman (ankle) is expected to play in Week 3 against the Chargers.

Coleman returned to practice on Friday and was listed as questionable for today’s game. DJ Moore (shoulder) also looks likely to play through his questionable tag. Coleman stepped up last week with six catches for 63 yards on six targets. While he’s not on the fantasy radar as long as Moore suits up, Coleman could be a valuable role player for the Bills this year.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports “the hope is” that Tyjae Spears (ankle) will play in Week 3 against the Giants.

Spears got in one limited practice this week before being listed as questionable. Per Garafolo, the Titans want to see how Spears looks in warmups before making a decision. The Titans are playing at New York, where rain and winds are expected to be an issue. The field conditions could play a role in whether Spears suits up or not. If he doesn’t, rookie Nick Singleton would see a few extra touches.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Jayden Daniels (elbow) is expected to return “at three weeks or sooner.”

Daniels dislocated his left (non-throwing) elbow in Week 2. He suffered the same injury last year and it functionally ended his season. The good news for Commanders fans and fantasy managers is that he is not undergoing surgery and wasn’t placed on injured reserve. Still, Daniels will miss a few weeks and then runs the risk of re-injuring the elbow after returning. Marcus Mariota will start until Daniels is healthy. Mariota is one of the league’s best backups, so the fantasy outlook for Stefon Diggs and Terry McLaurin shouldn’t be too much worse while Daniels is out.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports J.J. McCarthy and Justin Fields are on the list of quarterback options for the Giants.

If you have ever thrown a football, get an agent and have them contact the New York Giants. McCarthy and Fields join a list that, per previous reports, already included Gardner Minshew, Mac Jones, and Jimmy Garoppolo. Schefter also named Brandon Allen, who was on the Giants’ roster during training camp, as an option. Jameis Winston will get the start in Week 3, but the journeyman passer looked downright awful in relief of Jaxson Dart last week. The team will be forced to make a move at quarterback if he struggles versus the Titans today. McCarthy would be a true Hail Mary for the G-Men, but he does have a strong tie to the Harbaugh brothers via his time at Michigan.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Brock Bowers (knee) is expected to play in Week 3 against the Saints, barring a surprise.

Bowers will still need to test out his knee during pre-game warmups, but all signs point to him making his 2026 debut later today. The team heavily limited his workload during practice this week and could do so in his first game back from the late offseason meniscus trim. Still, if Bowers is active, fantasy managers have to get him in their lineups.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Jalen Coker (ankle) “should play” in Week 3 against the Browns.

Xavier Legette (knee) remains a game-time decision. Both players were officially listed as questionable on Friday. Coker has gotten off to a red-hot start this year with 16 grabs for 204 yards and a pair of scores through two weeks. Even if he’s limited by the ankle issue, the production is too good to keep on the bench. He is, at worst, a WR3 for his date with the Browns.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Myles Garrett “was given a timeline of roughly six weeks for his recovery from knee surgery.”

Garrett attempted to play through the knee issue in Week 1 but was clearly bothered by the balky knee. He underwent a knee scope shortly after the Rams’ opener and was placed on injured reserve. It was initially expected to be closer to a four-week absence for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Now he’ll miss a bit longer than that, and Rapoport added that the team will be cautious with his return, so he could be sidelined beyond even the six-week timeline.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Mike Evans (hip) plans to play in Week 3 against the Cardinals.

Evans has been trending in the right direction throughout the week, with Kyle Shanahan already telling reporters a few days ago that he has a good chance to suit up. The team officially listed him as questionable on their final injury report, but fantasy managers can assume he is playing for now. Evans could see his role scaled back slightly, but the 49ers are extremely thin at receiver, having lost Demarcus Robinson to an ankle injury most recently. Even at less than full strength, Evans remains in play as a fantasy WR2.
