Cam Ward completed 5-of-12 passes for 57 yards in Thursday’s preseason opener against the 49ers, adding a two-yard rush.

Ward, who played three series, didn’t offer up many highlights, but he did help author a 95-yard touchdown drive on the Titans’ opening series vs. the 49ers’ backups. Learning a new offensive system as he breaks in a heavily revamped supporting cast, it’s not a surprise tonight was a “growing pains” effort even if it came against the second and third string. If Ward plays in the Titans’ second preseason game, it will be against the defending champion Seahawks.

Ward’s second pass of the game resulted in an interception, but he would settle in to put together his most productive outing of the season. Ward linked up with rookie first-rounder Carnell Tate on multiple long gains and ended the day with four completions of 20-plus yards. The two would connect on a 33-yard pass late in the fourth quarter on a fourth-and-10, and on the next play, Ward would find Wan’Dale Robinson for a three-yard score to cut the Ravens’ lead to 24-18. Ward did a good job at evading pressure in this one. Despite being pressured on 11 dropbacks, per PFF, only one of those resulted in a sack. Ward has been sacked just once over the last two weeks, but will have a tough challenge ahead of him next week when the Titans play host to the Texans. Ward projects as a low-end QB2 next week.

Asked about Ward’s continuing footwork disaster, Saleh said the second-year quarterback “usually starts off good then fades into old habits.” Titans beat writer Terry McCormick then asked Saleh “why if his footwork gets worse as the game goes on, why the offense has had such slow starts. [Saleh] said it has been dropped passes vs. Giants and defense not getting off field vs. Eagles.” Saleh has made a point to shield Ward from all criticism throughout the preseason and through three horrific regular season outings. Ward ranks 20th in accuracy and 29th in EPA per drop back this season. He’s fresh off throwing a game-deciding end zone interception against the lowly Giants in Week 3. Mitchell Trubisky will probably get a couple starts this season if Ward can’t turn things around.

Ward’s gotten off to a slow start in 2026, completing 62.5 percent of his passes for a meager 504 yards and two touchdowns in three games. He has improved his sack rate quite a bit, cutting it from 9.2 percent in 2025 to 5.38 percent so far this year. The Titans backup is Mitch Trubisky. It is probably too soon to give up on Ward, but it doesn’t bode well for his future that Saleh is already being asked the question. Ward will be one of the bottom five quarterbacks in the Week 4 fantasy rankings against the Ravens.

The Titans’ offense looked dead on arrival with 34 yards on their six first-half drives. They opened the game with four consecutive three-and-outs and didn’t get on the board until late in the fourth quarter, when Ward tossed a short touchdown to Wan’Dale Robinson. It looked like Ward was getting in rhythm late in the game, but he ended the contest with a ghastly interception directly into the hands of Jevon Holland, who was standing in the end zone waiting for the ball. Ward took care of the ball until the game-ending throw, but this was a one step forward, two steps back showing from the young passer. That has unfortunately been the case for the better part of the last three weeks. Ward is not on the fantasy radar for Week 4 against the Ravens, and his poor play is making all of the team’s fantasy options largely irrelevant.

Ward’s two scores on the ground doubled his previous career total, though he is now sitting on one passing touchdown through eight quarters. He is at least not turning the ball over, and has taken “just” five sacks. He has been so far unable to heat up his connections with offseason additions Carnell Tate and Wan’Dale Robinson, but he found Elic Ayomanor for two critical gains vs. Philly. Cutting out the negative plays was an absolutely essential first step for Ward, but he has yet to supplement them with big gains or consistent chain-moving. That included botching a Hail Mary in the fourth quarter this afternoon. Ward won’t be much of a superflex option for next week’s road date with the Giants.

Ward also took three sacks for 13 yards. His touchdown was a too little, too late 11-yard strike to Elic Ayomanor with the Titans trailing 23-3 at the 2:42 mark of the fourth quarter. As was the case down the stretch last season, Ward did a good job of avoiding turnovers, but he struggled to generate positive plays of any kind. He was besieged by pressure, but he just wasn’t making anything happen. That could come in time — there’s a new experienced play-caller in Brian Daboll and several new weapons in the skill corps — but this was a highly discouraging start to the year at home vs. a not-exactly-amazing Jets defense. It was certainly confirmation that Ward is on the outside looking in of top-24 status in superflex leagues for the time being. The Eagles are a rough Week 2 matchup, even if the Titans are at home.

Cam Ward’s preseason has been as bad or even worse than his rookie campaign. Ward in last week’s preseason game against Seattle completed eight of his 12 attempts for 69 yards. His average depth of target on completed passes this preseason sits at a meager 1.2. Carnell Tate, meanwhile, has been targeted five times on his 23 preseason routes and does not have a reception to show for it. Daboll has been somewhat defensive this month when asked about Ward’s immense struggles after working on basic fundamentals with the second-year QB in the offseason. Ward, one of the most inaccurate passers in recent NFL history, is unlikely to support more than one fantasy-viable pass catcher in 2026.

Ward would have cleared 100 yards in the box score had TE Gunnar Helm not stepped out of bounds while hauling in a downfield pass during a scramble drill. Ward’s ability to make ridiculous throws off-script remains a plus and a minus. It wasn’t a great game for his connection with rookie Carnell Tate. The duo went 0-of-2 out of five total pass attempts from Ward on the first drive this evening against Seattle.

Davenport penned a lengthy piece detailing how OC Brian Daboll is focused on developing QB Cam Ward’s play on third down, in the red zone and in the two-minute drill. This is pretty straightforward. Those are all high-leverage situations, so harping on Ward’s performance there makes sense. Robinson played on all three drives in the Titans’ first preseason game while veteran Calvin Ridley was on the field for one. Rookie WR Carnell Tate was on the field for the first and third drives. A featured role on third downs could help Robinson return FLEX value — he’s certainly being paid like he is going to be featured.

“The Titans have added a lot of really good pieces who fit what they do,” the executive told Lombardo. “I think Robert Saleh has hired an excellent staff, and I believe in the quarterback. Cam Ward is going to take a jump, and I expect them to be solid enough on defense to win some games.” One of the most erratic, inaccurate quarterbacks in the league in 2025, Ward has worked this offseason with new OC Brian Daboll to improve his lower body mechanics and has reportedly learned how to make more cautious throws when downfield shots are not open. Saleh, for one, has said he’s not concerned with Ward’s 2025 accuracy issues. With the additions of Carnell Tate and Wan’Dale Robinson, Ward will have a vastly improved wideout group with which to work in 2026.

Ryan Flournoy caught 3-of-4 targets for 90 yards in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

Flournoy continues to operate as the clear WR3 behind CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, typically incapable of returning viable fantasy production in their shadows. He hit for a 48-yard reception at the end of the second quarter to set up a go-ahead field goal entering the break, otherwise remaining about as quiet as we would expect. This was the first game in 2026 over a modest 37 yards for Flournoy, who could be tasked with additional emphasis in the immediate future after Lamb departed with a quad injury in the fourth quarter. He could be worth a speculative add ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the reeling Packers.

Jake Ferguson caught 3-of-6 targets for 19 yards in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

Ferguson committed two uncharacteristic drops against the Buccaneers, the second of which resulted in a game-sealing interception to push the Cowboys to 2-3 ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Packers. Now held to 43 yards or fewer in five consecutive games, Ferguson is relegated to a touchdown-dependent TE2.

George Pickens caught 9-of-13 targets for 130 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

Pickens was the primary target throughout the game against the single-high-heavy Buccaneers, scoring a late fourth quarter touchdown to cap off his first impressive fantasy outing of the young season. Furthermore, fellow receiver CeeDee Lamb departed the game in the fourth quarter with a quad injury that he was unable to play through, potentially setting up Pickens for immense volume in a Week 6 meeting with the Packers at Lambeau. Fantasy managers have patiently watched as Lamb stole the show through the first four games of 2026, but it now appears as if Pickens will have his time to shine, pending the severity of Lamb’s soft tissue injury. Pickens is a WR2 with Lamb active and a surefire WR1 with Lamb out.

Javonte Williams rushed 12 times for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers, adding 17 yards on two receptions.

Williams has now averaged 3.8 yards per carry or fewer in four of five games, keeping his fantasy value afloat via six combined touchdowns through five weeks. While the touchdown equity is solid in one of the league’s most potent offenses, we’re liable to see more down weeks like the one he put forth against the Buccaneers unless, or until, the Cowboys can fix their woes on the ground. Williams did see all but one running back opportunity in this one, keeping him in the top six in backfield opportunity rate through Week 5. Consider Williams a volume-aided and touchdown-aided RB2 ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the reeling Packers.

Dak Prescott completed 24-of-42 passes for 316 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Cowboys’ 24-16, Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

The two interceptions on Dak’s ledger were both in-and-out of his receivers’ hands, the second of which hit tight end Jake Ferguson in the face mask to allow the Buccaneers to ice the game in the fourth quarter. The first “pick” bounced off the hands of Ryan Flournoy to allow the Buccaneers to establish an 11-point lead at the beginning of the third quarter, a deficit the Cowboys would be unable to overcome. That said, Prescott wasn’t at all at his sharpest, missing numerous throws wide in addition to a few badly under-thrown balls in the second half. To make matters worse, alpha wide receiver CeeDee Lamb departed the game in the fourth quarter with a quad injury. The Cowboys fall to 2-3 and find themselves looking up at both the Giants and Eagles ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Packers at Lambeau. Prescott returns to QB1 status in what has become a soft matchup, pending the health of Lamb.

Ted Hurst was not targeted in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys.

Hurst has seen his role eaten into by downfield threat Tez Johnson as the season has progressed, clearly not yet ready to take on a full workload in the offense as he enters the second month of his rookie season. Hurst brings the size and physicality to grow into a consistent producer at the NFL level, something fantasy managers could have to be patient with in the coming weeks. Hurst safely remains a bench stash ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Steelers.

Chris Godwin caught all three targets for 37 yards in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys.

Godwin’s three targets finished tied for fourth on the team behind Emeka Egbuka, Cade Otton, and Kenny Gainwell on a night backup quarterback Jalon Daniels attempted only 25 passes. Week 5 now marks the fourth game in five tries in which Godwin was held to four targets or fewer, leaving the veteran wide receiver completely unusable in a fantasy setting, for the time being. He can safely be stashed on benches ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Steelers.

Emeka Egbuka caught 6-of-9 targets for 38 yards in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys, adding 14 yards and a touchdown on one carry.

Egbuka’s nine targets handily led the team on a night undrafted free agent rookie Jalon Daniels attempted only 25 passes. The team also demonstrated an active desire to get Egbuka more involved following a four-target game against the Packers a week ago, feeding him a red zone carry on a jet sweep for his touchdown score. Egbuka remains at the mercy of the team’s lackluster quarterback situation for at least another week, pending Baker Mayfield’s injury. He’ll be a shaky WR3 against the Steelers in Week 6.

Tez Johnson caught his only target for 64 yards in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys.

Two of Johnson’s five receptions this season have accounted for 113 yards in what has become a situational role for the Buccaneers behind Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin, and rookie Ted Hurst. That big play ability remains unlikely to translate into consistent fantasy production while running a route on less than a third of the team’s dropbacks, meaning Johnson is likely best left on the waiver wire.

Bucky Irvin rushed 21 times for 165 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys, adding 10 yards and a touchdown on two receptions.

Irving cashed in on an early touchdown on the team’s first possession on a reception from quarterback Jalon Daniels on a leak to the right side of the formation, otherwise having a relatively quiet first half. Things would change in a hurry after the break as Irving ripped off a 72-yard explosive run on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. He would cash in on his second trip to paint on the following drive from one yard out before somewhat confusingly retreating to the sideline without his helmet the following two possessions. That raised speculation that his glute injury had flared up, a notion he would dispel in the fourth quarter as he helped to ice the game. This game goes down as his first 100-yard rushing game since Week 16 of his rookie season in 2024. Irving remains a volatile RB2 ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Steelers.
