Bills RB Ty Johnson (hamstring) was not present during the portion of practice open to the media.

Johnson went down while running a route on August 9th. He resumed running roughly two weeks ago, but has not yet rejoined his teammates in drills. Although Johnson is not on the fantasy radar himself, he has hogged passing down snaps in recent seasons. Starting RB James Cook has been expected to take on a larger receiving role this season, and Johnson’s potential absence adds credence to that idea.

He added two catches for either yards. This game was never more than a one-score game, so it’s pretty shocking that Cook only had 14 touches. The Patriots did a good job containing him early in the game, apart from his touchdown run, but the Bills simply moved away from the running game too quickly. Cook was gaining huge chunk yards in the second half and should have been fed more carries during the game. With the Bills having their second straight mediocre offensive performance, you have to wonder if they will make it a point to lean on Cook more next week against the Rams.

Johnson missed the first two games after having his hamstring accessory tendon removed on August 11th. We’re not sure what that entails, but it doesn’t sound like a minor injury, and it makes sense why Johnson is only now able to return. Still, in his first game back, Johnson remains the clear passing game back in Buffalo’s offense. While he was second on the team in receiving, he played just 15 snaps, and 30 of his 50 receiving yards came on one catch. He’s not a recommended option in fantasy, and Ray Davis would remain the main beneficiary if James Cook were to get hurt.
  • BUF Running Back #4
Cook was the only running back to get a carry on the day, and he ripped off over six yards per rush. He got the Bills down inside the two-yard line twice but watched as Josh Allen ran it into the end zone each time. On the third trip deep into the red zone, Cook rushed it in from four yards out. With Ty Johnson back, Cook did cede some passing game work; however, Cook also played 42 of the team’s 62 snaps, compared to just 15 snaps for Johnson. The lack of receiving may prevent Cook from being a top-five running back, but he’s a clear RB1.

He practiced in full all week and will return to his third-down role against the Chargers.
  • BUF Running Back #4
Cook jumped out to a scorching start on the ground, reaching the century mark in rushing before the half. Still, fantasy managers were left scratching their head as they watched Josh Allen account for three touchdowns from inside the five, two on the ground and one through the air. It wasn’t until a 22-yard carry that was down at the one late in the fourth quarter that the team rewarded Cook with a short-yardage touchdown, finally allowing fantasy managers their first taste of sweet touchdown copium from their first-round draft pick on the young season. Cook is likely to remain busy when the Bills host the Jets in Week 3, where he will remain a locked-in RB1.

Johnson mainly serves as a third-down specialist, so his absence is not hugely consequential. The Bills promoted RB Frank Fore Jr. from the practice squad. He and RB Ray Davis will back up starting RB James Cook tonight.
  • BUF Running Back #4
Bills RB James Cook totaled 57 yards on just 13 rushing attempts last week, adding three catches for 12 yards. Per Fowler, the Bills plan to use him a lot more in primetime this evening. Cook can be treated as a locked-in RB1 in what should be a fantasy-friendly game environment on Thursday Night Football. The Bills notably elevated RB Frank Gore Jr. from the practice squad, which could indicate that RB Ty Johnson (hamstring) will be inactive tonight.
  • BUF Running Back #26
Johnson was limited in practice throughout the week after missing the Bills’ opener versus Houston. James Cook’s receiving role didn’t change much with Johnson out. Instead, Ray Davis and Frank Gore Jr. picked up a few extra routes each. Neither player has much fantasy appeal, even if Johnson remains out.
  • BUF Running Back #26
Johnson, the only offensive player on the Bills injury report ahead of Thursday’s clash with the Lions, could be trending in the right direction for Week 2. If he does return, he’ll take passing-game work off Frank Gore Jr.'s plate.
  • BUF Running Back #26
We’ll have a better idea of if Johnson can go for Week 2 on Tuesday — when the Bills will run an actual practice. Johnson didn’t return to practice until the Friday ahead of Week 1 as he’s nursed this hamstring injury throughout most of training camp. If he does go, he’ll step in as Buffalo’s third-down back. The Bills mostly used Frank Gore Jr. there in the second half during Week 1’s win.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reports Justin Jefferson (ankle) is expected to play in Week 5 against the Saints.

Jordan Addison, on the other hand, is not expected to suit up because of a hamstring issue. Even at less than full strength, Jefferson will dominate the targets for Minnesota, especially with Addison on ice. Barring a setback in warmups, Jefferson remains a top-half WR1 play for Week 5.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reports Jordan Addison (hamstring) “isn’t likely to be active” for Week 5 against the Saints.

Addison got in two limited practices this week before being listed as questionable. He was considered a game-time decision as of this morning, but it sounds like the team is going to hold him out for at least one week. Justin Jefferson, on the other hand, is expected to suit up. The offense will run through him, per usual.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Lamar Jackson (ankle) has a “real chance” to return in Week 6 against the Browns.

Jackson was ruled out for Week 5 on Friday after failing to practice once this week. Rapoport added that Jackson has been “working like crazy” to get back on the field next week. Per Rapoport, that is Jackson’s goal. Tyler Huntley will start for as long as Jackson remains sidelined.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Terry McLaurin is a “true game-time decision” for Week 5 against the Giants.

McLaurin is listed as questionable for Week 5 after getting in a single limited practice on Friday. Even if he does play, McLaurin will likely be on a pitch count. Stefon Diggs has already been ruled out with a hamstring issue of his own. Rookie Antonio Williams will be asked to step up whether or not McLaurin is active.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Keenan Allen (groin) is expected to play in Week 5 against the Steelers.

Allen missed Week 4 with the groin issue but returned to practice this week and even managed a full session on Friday. The team still listed him as questionable, though he appeared to be on the right side of that designation heading into the weekend. Allen will be a low-ceiling WR4 for his date with the Steelers.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Jake Matthews (groin) is expected to play in Week 5 against the Ravens.

The Falcons’ left tackle has started 199 consecutive games in his career. His streak appeared to be in jeopardy early in the week, but the iron-man tackle practiced in full on Friday, putting him on the right side of questionable for today’s game. He should be good to go for Week 5.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Rhamondre Stevenson (knee) is expected to play in Week 5 against the Raiders.

Stevenson already told reporters on Friday that he was “ready to go”, so this news item doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Stevenson will continue to operate as the Pats’ top option in high-leverage situations, though he could cede more work between the 20s to TreVeyon Henderson. Both backs are stuck as low-ceiling RB3 options this week.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Marlon Humphrey (hamstring/calf) is expected to play in Week 5 against the Falcons.

Humphrey logged one limited practice this week before being listed as questionable for Week 5. He’s one of several key defenders dealing with an injury heading into Sunday Night Football. EDGE Trey Hendrickson has already been ruled out, while S Kyle Hamilton is questionable with a groin injury. Even with some missing names, this defense still looks like a true test for Michael Penix.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports, “There are doctors around the NFL who believe it’s a matter of when, not if, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels hurts his left elbow again.”

Schefter immediately added the caveat that the “overwhelming opinion” among doctors was that playing with a brace was a viable option. Daniels reportedly contemplated surgery after dislocating his elbow for the second time in less than a year. He opted against it and missed two games. Daniels is now set to return for Week 5 against the Giants. The Commanders could scale back his rushing for the time being, but OC David Blough already dismissed the idea that the playbook would be limited because of Daniels’ elbow injury.
