NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Patriots WR A.J. Brown (ankle) will miss at least four weeks.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz puts Brown’s return timeline between 3 and 6 weeks. Both reports make Brown a candidate to be placed on short-term injured reserve. The rest of the Patriots’ wide receiver corps failed to step up in Week 1. Newcomer WR Romeo Doubs will undoubtedly be given a chance to earn his hefty contract in Week 2.
Why Vikings signed OBJ to the practice squad
Mike Florio reacts to Odell Beckham Jr. joining the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad, discussing how the wide receiver reuniting with Kevin O'Connell could be a "final warning" to Jauan Jennings.

Doubs simply beat Bills cornerback Maxwell Hairston all game long. He seemed to be open at will and almost had a bigger day when he failed to haul in a 40+ yard pass that went off his hands on a diving attempt in the fourth quarter. With Mack Hollins (calf) getting hurt in the first half, Doubs played on 47 of the team’s 70 snaps and ran a route on 30 of their 43 dropbacks, the most of any receiver on the team. It seems that Doubs is finally starting to click with Drake Maye, and now that Hollins is out and A.J. Brown (ankle) is still not ready to come back, Doubs could be in for a big role against the Raiders next week.

Garfolo made it clear that this is what the team hopes will happen, but it’s far from a sure thing. Week 6 is the first week Brown is eligible to return from injured reserve. The Pats placed him on IR after he suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 1. Previous reports had Brown out for 6-8 weeks, so fantasy managers should be skeptical that he will be back for Week 6, but it’s at least on the table.

Doubs was again an every-down player and finished second behind Mack Hollins in receiving yards. Doubs continues to be an afterthought in the New England offense, even with A.J. Brown out with a severe ankle injury. Through three games Doubs now has just six catches in the low-wattage Pats offense. He’ll be a deep league option in Week 4 against the Bills.

Schefter and other reporters previously called it a 4-6 week injury, which now seems unlikely. Schefter did add that Brown is moving “pretty well” and could come back on the faster side of his updated timeline. Still, it looks like Brown will miss at least half of the regular season. Romeo Doubs will operate as the team’s No. 1 receiver until he returns, though it will likely be a group effort to replace Browns’ production. Mack Hollins and Demario Douglas will also be more involved.

Doubs followed up a rough Week 1 with a productive Week 2, leading the Patriots wideouts in targets, receptions, and yards. With A.J. Brown out, Doubs started and tallied the second-most snaps among Pats wide receivers for the day. The bulk of his yardage came from a pair of third-quarter chunk gains, catching a 29-yard pass early in the quarter and breaking free for a 63-yard gain later in the quarter. Between Drake Maye’s early season struggles and a spread-the-wealth approach in the passing game, the Patriots receivers’ ceilings are capped. Doubs looks like the best pass-catching option and will be firmly in the WR4 ranks for Week 3 against the Jaguars.

Schefter added Brown will miss four to six weeks with the high ankle sprain he sustained on Wednesday night against the Seahawks. It could be much longer than that before Brown is back to full health and operating as the Patriots’ alpha WR1. For now, Mack Hollins will slide into three-receiver sets and Romeo Doubs — who didn’t catch any of his three targets against Seattle — will likely function as Drake Maye’s top option. Demario Douglas could be an interesting add in deeper formats after leading the team with seven targets in Week 1.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise after it was reported on Thursday that Brown could miss at least the next four games. Now that he finds himself on injured reserve, the star receiver won’t be able to return until at least Week 6 when the Patriots play host to the Jets. Brown caught just three passes for 26 yards in his debut with the Patriots before exiting the game. After running just four routes in the first half of Wednesday’s game, Mack Hollins ran 22 routes in the second half and should see an increase in snaps in the coming weeks. Brown’s absence should also pave the way for Romeo Doubs to see more looks in the passing game after he saw just three targets in Week 1.

Garafolo added, “MRI today after X-rays were negative.” That’s a good sign, but there is currently no timeline for Brown’s return. It will ultimately be a multi-week injury that could linger well into the season. Demario Douglas led the Pats with seven targets last night, though his looks are generally low-value check-downs. Mack Hollins and Romeo Doubs will serve as the team’s primary outside receivers until Brown is healthy. Hollins led the Pats in receiving yards at a modest 51. Hollins is worth adding in deeper leagues, but it’s hard to imagine him putting up anything more than WR4 numbers while Brown is sidelined. Doubs should improve in Week 2 after failing to catch any of his three targets versus the Seahawks. He will get another shot at WR3 numbers against Pittsburgh next week.

Romeo Doubs said to reporters after the game that Brown told teammates, “Everything was going to be alright.” He added that Brown was doing really well. Brown had his ankle rolled on while going to the ground in the third quarter of last night’s game. He immediately grabbed his ankle in pain and eventually limped off the field. New England ruled him out after a trip to the locker room. It sounds like a high-ankle sprain, which would sideline Brown for at least a few weeks. Mack Hollins and Romeo Doubs will both play more in his absence. Demario Douglas, who led the team with seven targets in Week 1, will also see more work.
  • NE Wide Receiver #87
Doubs was blanketed in coverage all night. He failed to climb the ladder and win a jump ball early in the fourth quarter, resulting in a deflected ball turning into an interception. Later in the quarter, Doubs turned his eyes upfield before securing the pass and let the ball slip out of his hands for a drop. Drake Maye was intercepted on the next play. By any measure, this was a catastrophic debut for a player who signed a four-year, $68 million contract in the offseason. The good news for Doubs is that the team will likely be counting on him to step up next week. A.J. Brown left this game with an ankle injury and did not return. If he isn’t available for Week 2 versus the Steelers, Doubs will get one more chance at a WR3 fantasy ranking.

Eagles activated RB Dameon Pierce to the team’s active roster.

Pierce will probably operate as the team’s No. 2 back behind Will Shipley this week against the Jaguars, one of the league’s best rush defenses. Tank Bigsby and Saquon Barkley are sidelined, leaving the Eagles scraping bottom for backfield depth. Look for Pierce to get some early-down work against the Jaguars. Shipley, who had six carries for 23 yards last week, is the only viable fantasy option of the two, though head coach Nick Sirianni heaped praise on Pierce Wednesday. “He’s an NFL starting running back,” Sirriani said of Pierce. “Maybe wouldn’t have said that when he was on our practice squad publicly, because of the fear of losing him. But he’s an NFL starting running back.”

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Adonai Mitchell (finger) remains week to week.

Mitchell will likely miss his third straight game with the finger issue. He suffered the injury just as he was coming on as the team’s clear No. 2 wideout behind Garrett Wilson. With Mitchell sidelined last week against the Bears, Isaiah Williams was second on the team in pass routes, saw three targets, and caught a 58-yard touchdown from Geno Smith. Williams will have some deep-league viability in Week 5 against a Browns defense allowing the most air yards in the NFL.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Breece Hall (quad) is still “week to week.”

It doesn’t look like Hall will practice this week as he recovers from the injury he sustained in Week 3. That would mean Braelon Allen, who saw all 14 running back rushes for New York in Week 4, will again function as the team’s workhorse in Week 5 against the Browns. Allen should still be considered a top-24 option despite the Jets’ immense offensive struggles last week against Chicago. The Browns defense is allowing the sixth highest EPA per rush this season.

Vikings signed Odell Beckham, Jr., formerly of the Giants.

Beckham, 33, was released by the Giants last week after getting almost no playing time in the season’s first few games. In Minnesota he will reunite with Kevin O’Connell, who worked with OBJ during his stint with the Rams. With Justin Jefferson (ankle) sidelined last week, Jordan Addison led Minnesota wideouts with 39 percent of the team’s air yards and 16 percent of the targets. Jauan Jennings, meanwhile, had one target while running 95 percent of the team’s routes. Beckham could operate as the team’s WR2 while Jefferson is sidelined. In the Vikings’ ultra run-heavy offense, that probably won’t matter for fantasy purposes.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Lamar Jackson’s ankle sprain is “unconventional.”

The sprain Jackson sustained in Week 4 against the Titans, according to Rapoport, is neither low nor high. Rapoport said Monday that Jackson has an “outside” shot at suiting up in Week 5 against the Falcons and could miss multiple games with the unique ankle situation. Tyler Huntley will once again sub in for Jackson until he’s ready to return. Baltimore will likely be far more run heavy with Huntley under center, limiting targets for Zay Flowers and the rest of the Ravens pass catchers.

Patriots brought in free agent RB Jamaal Williams for a workout.

The Pats brought in an interesting name to work out for the backfield this week, bringing in former Packers, Lions, and Saints running back Jamaal Williams. The 31-year-old last appeared in the NFL for the Saints in 2024, tallying 164 rushing yards that season. He had a career year for the Lions in 2022, totaling 1,000 yards on the ground and leading the league in rushing touchdowns. The Patriots are looking for some depth behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson; there is no indication Williams will sign, but he will be practice squad depth if he does.

Giants WR Braxton Berrios (foot) announced he will need season-ending surgery.

Berrios announced on his Instagram that he will need season-ending surgery for his foot injury that landed him on injured reserve. The 31-year-old is primarily a special teamer, returning four punts and five kicks this season. Injuries have prevented Berrios from appearing in more than 14 games over the last three seasons and he now has his season end early as he requires foot surgery.

Broncos signed WR Cam Ross to their practice squad.

With Pat Bryant (ankle) suffering a multi-week injury in Week 4, the Broncos are adding to their wide receiver depth by signing Ross to the practice squad. The 25-year-old Ross was an undrafted free agent out of Virginia who spent training camp with the Broncos before he was let go in final cuts. Ross now re-joins the practice squad. EDGE Jahfari Harvey was let go from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Cardinals signed OL Jedrick Wills off Buffalo’s practice squad.

He’ll replace Paris Johnson, who heads to season-ending injured reserve. Wills, the former 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft, will compete with 2026 seventh-rounder Jayden Williams for reps at left tackle in Johnson’s absence.
