Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said Justin Herbert must “be better.”

It’s hard to write these quotes without sounding “clicky,” but Harbaugh was forthright at his Monday press conference when asked about Herbert’s decision-making. “Be better. Be better,” Harbaugh said before attempting to soften the blow. “And that drives Justin, that drives me, that drives his position coach, that drives (OC Mike [McDaniel). I mean, drives us all.” Harbaugh also said the team could look to simplify McDaniel’s complex scheme. “As far as the scheme going forward, all options are open,” Harbaugh claimed. When asked what that might entail, the coach responded “run, pass, up the middle, motion, no motion.” Alrighty then. It’s shocking to hear a coach talk this frankly — especially Harbaugh about Herbert — but the situation really is that dire in Los Angeles. Herbert is in the crossfire, but it could be McDaniel who is on something of a hot seat with his play-calling. Sitting at 0-3, the Chargers face the unwelcome prospect of a “must win” Week 4 contest against defending Super Bowl champion Seattle, itself coming off a rough loss. We will be benching Herbert in fantasy for that one.
Gordon, Wright expectations after Achane's injury
With De’Von Achane out for the season with a torn ACL, Patrick Daugherty and Kyle Dvorchak caution fantasy owners from expecting too much production from Ollie Gordon II or Jaylen Wright off of waivers.

On one hand, Herbert was under constant pressure in this game behind a beat-up offensive line and was able to evade pressure regularly and extend plays. On the other hand, he really wasn’t able to get anything going down the field. His one touchdown “pass” was on a handoff where he essentially let go of the ball and Keaton Mitchell took the “forward pass” into the end zone on a jet sweep. Herbert’s interception was a terrible pass in the end zone when the Chargers were up 13-10 and looking to put the game away. The Bills also dropped two other potential interceptions. Herbert looks pretty firmly like a QB2 here, and it’s hard to get overly excited about playing him next week against the Seahawks.

The Chargers were an uncoordinated mess in this one. They committed loads of procedural penalties on offense, had several drops, and botched multiple handoffs or snaps. Their final penalty was holding in their own end zone, resulting in a safety. David Njoku handed Herbert’s first interception to a defender, but the second pick was all his fault. Herbert fired into a non-existent window on a deep shot and was easily intercepted by the Vegas secondary. Herbert also committed two fumbles, though both were recovered by the Chargers. Sitting at 0-2 with murderer’s row of opponents on deck, something has to change in a hurry for the Chargers. Herbert will shuffle into the QB2 ranks for his Week 3 date with the Bills.

Herbert shredded the Arizona secondary in the Bolts’ first drive of the game. From there he struggled to complete even routine passes and got nothing going downfield. Ladd McConkey’s exit from the ballgame in the third quarter all but ended Herbert’s production for the day. Herbert, to his credit, tried to push the ball downfield, averaging 10.8 intended air yards per attempt, the fourth highest mark of Week 1. The Cards’ time of possession domination limited play volume for LA, torpedoing fantasy prospects across the board. Hopefully for Herbert, the Chargers will have McConkey back for Week 2 against the Raiders. Herbert will be a borderline top-12 option.

McDaniel said the team has worked diligently on the quick passing game during offseason practices and training camp. McDaniel said he knows Herbert can excel on the “long developing plays” but wants to create more easy drop backs with schemes that “nullify the pass rush” and allow Herbert to get the ball out quickly to his pass catchers. This should lead to plenty of easy-button targets for Ladd McConkey and the team’s tight ends as Quentin Johnston continues operating as Herbert’s primary deep ball guy. Under McDaniel, the Chargers will likely be run-first with a far more efficient passing attack than they had under former OC Greg Roman.

New Chargers OC Mike McDaniel reduced Herbert’s throwing frequency in spring practices in an effort to keep Herbert’s arm fresh later in the season. Herbert is instead focused on adjusting his shotgun footwork according to McDaniel’s unorthodox, yet often successful preferences. According to Rhim, this led to Herbert and his receivers frequently being “just out of sync on timing” in team drills. That said, Rhim believes that this is " an expected part of implementing a new offense but something that will need to improve during training camp.” We agree. This is not overly concerning, but it will be worthwhile to follow up on Herbert’s connection with his pass catchers.

Herbert told Popper that his arm feels “pretty good,” but he “can definitely tell that [he is] heading into Year 7.” Veterans often get rest days, so this is nothing to be alarmed about. New Chargers OC Mike McDaniel recently outlined his plan to bring out the best in Herbert. He expanded on that plan with Popper, saying he believes the Chargers “can create more explosive plays in the short area of the field,” while also mitigating the opposing pass rush. Aligning Herbert’s footwork and release with his receivers’ route timing is key. In the past, Herbert has relied on his arm strength to make tight window throws after watching his pass catchers get open. Now, the 28-year-old quarterback is working on “trusting [his receivers], and just throwing it to a spot and letting them go get it.” If it all comes together, Herbert’s per-play efficiency could increase while his pressure-to-sack rate decreases this season.

McDaniel explained Herbert’s strengths and weaknesses to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, noting that Herbert performs efficiently when he either gets the ball out in under 2.4 seconds or less, or “extends plays and launches it down the field.” However, Herbert’s efficiency decreases as the time to throw reaches three seconds. McDaniel plans to “max out those quick throws,” which was a staple in McDaniel’s Dolphins’ offenses, while also allowing Herbert to extend plays at times. That said, McDaniel does not want to make the offense reliant on Herbert’s ability to go above and beyond. He stopped short of explaining that aspect, but McDaniel’s offenses typically feature an efficient, voluminous run game. We expect that to be the case here as well. Herbert finished as the QB10 last year. He has decent odds of working his way up the QB1 tier this year.

McDaniel was scarce on details — not surprising — but promised to rein in the signal-caller a bit. McDaniel added “I think not relying too heavily on Justin’s ability to do above and beyond I think is critical. ... That’ll be one of the first things that we’ll try to do is take a little off his plate.” Reading between the lines, it’s possible that Herbert will be instructed to run a little less in 2026. He took off a career-high 83 times for 498 yards and two touchdowns. His overall fantasy value will probably remain as it was in 2025 — or improve — due to improved schematics. But we’re hoping the Chargers keep the running plays on the table for fantasy purposes and this does not sound like a team that plans to do that after watching him play the final six weeks of the season with a left hand that was recovering from surgery to repair a fracture.
  • LAC Offensive Coordinator
A dejected Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh was non-committal about Roman’s return as OC following LA’s blowout loss to the Patriots on Sunday night — a loss that saw Justin Herbert have one of his worst games as a pro as the Chargers scored just three points. The team’s offensive lineman, including Bradley Bozeman, were circumspect when asked whether Roman should return as the team’s OC in 2026 and call plays. “That’s their call upstairs,” Bozeman told The Athletic. Widely considered a run-first coordinator, Roman’s Bolts offense in 2025 ranked eighth in pass rate over expected, ranking 13th in total pass attempts. It would hardly be a shock if the Chargers moved on from Roman after two mediocre seasons.

The Patriots’ pass rush pressured Herbert from start to finish. It was an unfortunately fitting end to the Chargers’ season. Herbert lost two-time Pro Bowl LT Rashawn Slater to a season-ending patellar tendon injury in August. Third-year OT Joe Alt successfully switched from right tackle to left tackle following Slater’s injury, but Alt missed time after suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 4. He aggravated it in Week 9 and was forced to undergo season-ending surgery. Chargers backup offensive linemen suffered consequential injuries as well, leading to a career-high 54 sacks for Herbert in his age-27 season. Despite the pass-protection issues, Herbert completed 340-of-512 passes for 3,727 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, and rushed 83 times for 498 yards and two touchdowns. Both his rushing attempts and rushing yardage sums are career highs. He finishes as the QB10 in fantasy scoring and can again be treated as a mid-tier QB1 in 2026, hopefully, with improved offensive line health.

Bears declared QB Caleb Williams, OT Ozzy Trapilo, OG Jordan McFadden, DE Jamree Kromah, and DT Jayden Loving inactive for Week 3 against the Eagles.

Veteran journeyman Case Keenum will start under center for the Bears while Tyson Bagent will serve as his backup after clearing concussion protocol Sunday. Expect a ground-heavy game plan from the Bears as they look to hand the Eagles their first loss of the 2026 season.

Eagles declared TE Dallas Goedert, QB Tanner McKee, WR Hollywood Brown, QB Cole Payton, DL A.J. Epenesa, and T Fred Johnson inactive for Week 3 against the Bears.

No real surprises here after Goedert was ruled out earlier in the week. The team elevated veteran Zach Ertz to the active roster from the practice squad, although he remains unlikely to see a full workload after joining the team this week in the midst of recovering from a torn ACL suffered in 2025. Tanner McKee will serve as the emergency quarterback. EDGE Jonathan Greenard will make his season debut after missing the team’s first two games.

Rams HC Sean McVay said TE Terrance Ferguson (ankle) will likely miss Week 4 against the Eagles.

Ferguson briefly departed after injuring his ankle in the team’s Sunday Night Football loss to the Broncos, returning for two snaps prior to departing again after his lone reception of the evening. The ankle injury now appears likely to cost the talented young tight end at least one game, with the potential for the absence to linger if the sprain is “more high than low.” McVay also relayed that fellow tight end Colby Parkinson suffered an AC sprain and is considered day-to-day. Veteran Tyler Higbee would be in line to operate as the primary receiving tight end after amassing 62 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions in Week 3, should both miss. Higbee should be added in all formats as a potential TE1 in the immediate future.

Rams HC Sean McVay said he was “hopeful” WR Puka Nacua (groin) will be able to play in Week 4 against the Eagles.

We continue to get very little concrete news from McVay and the Rams regarding the injury, expected status, or recovery timeline for star wide receiver Puka Nacua. The most conclusive information given the previous two weeks is that the groin injury Nacua is dealing with is not related to the psoas injury he dealt with this offseason, although some have speculated that the verbiage used to describe the injury sounded like a sports hernia. Even that is pure speculation. Fantasy managers are left waiting in the holding pattern for more concrete news from their first-round fantasy selection. Davante Adams would clearly be in line to benefit from another absence after setting a career-high in receiving yards in consecutive games the previous two weeks.

Browns G Teven Jenkins (back) and C Elgton Jenkins (concussion) were listed as “DNP” on Monday’s estimated practice report.

The Browns have a quick turnaround as they prepare to face the Steelers on Thursday Night Football in Week 4, making it highly unlikely that Elgton Jenkins will be able to clear concussion protocol in time to suit up. That makes the practice status of Teven Jenkins of primary concern considering an absence would mean the Browns would be without two of their starting interior offensive linemen against one of the better pass rushes in the league.

Steelers RB Rico Dowdle (toe) was listed as a “DNP” on Monday’s estimated practice report.

Dowdle was unable to play in the team’s Week 3 win over the Bengals with the same issue and will likely need to get back on the practice field to have a chance to suit up on Thursday Night Football against the Browns in Week 4. Expect Jaylen Warren to see another game of workhorse usage after a 90 percent snap rate on Sunday, should Dowdle be unable to go. Warren would be a volume-based RB1 in a middling matchup in Dowdle’s absence.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he doesn’t plan to intervene in the offense if it continues to struggle.

When asked if he had any plans of intervening, Harbaugh offered his endorsement of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, saying, “No. We trust Mike. We believe in Mike.” The 0-3 Chargers have struggled mightily out of the gate to start the season, failing to score more than 16 points in a game while also turning the ball over six times. Even in a game where the Chargers forced five turnovers off of Josh Allen and the Bills and registered four sacks, they were unable to capitalize on multiple opportunities to take the lead in the 24-16 defeat. We’ll see how long Harbaugh can go continuing to let McDaniel run the show, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the team decided to make a change if things continue in this direction.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports Titans OG Fernando Carmona “will miss a few weeks” after suffering a sprained ankle in Week 3’s loss to the Giants.

Carmona is a rookie fifth-rounder who has started all three games for the Titans this season. He was injured on the first offensive snap of Sunday’s loss to the Giants and did not return; OG Jackson Slater replaced him for the rest of the game, and played 59 snaps while allowing only one pressure, per PFF. Slater is the favorite to take over in Carmona’s absence and should start in Week 4 against the Ravens.

Steelers DB Jalen Ramsey (wrist) was spotted in a sling at Monday’s practice.

This is a new injury for Ramsey, so we’ll see how it may affect his Week 4 status when the Steelers release their estimated injury report later in the day. Ramsey has appeared on 172 defensive snaps through the first three games of the season, totaling 17 tackles and one pass breakup thus far. Assuming this isn’t anything too severe, Ramsey could still have time to be ready to go for Thursday night’s game against the Browns.
