Dylan Sampson (knee) did not practice Wednesday.

The Browns opened Sampson’s practice window today, so it’s a bit odd to see him sit out of the session entirely. They were likely giving Sampson the option to suit up even though he may not be fully ready to return. With Quinshon Judkins injured and Raheim Sanders on IR, the Browns are clearly desperate at running back. If Sampson doesn’t play on Sunday, the backfield will be split between Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime. This is likely a fantasy situation to avoid at all costs.

Judkins suffered a potentially serious ankle injury in Week 5 and could miss Week 6 against the Ravens if he’s unable to practice in the next couple days. That could leave Jaleel McLaughlin as the Browns’ lead back against Baltimore. Dylan Sampson (knee) could also suit up if he’s able to practice after a four-week stint on IR.

Sampson was placed on injured reserve in mid-September with a knee injury. His return could be an immediate factor in the Browns backfield with Quinshon Judkins likely out with an ankle injury. Sampson could compete for backfield touches with Jaleel McLaughlin in Week 6 against the Ravens if he’s active.
  • CLE Running Back #22
He’ll miss at least the next four games with a knee ailment that had him spotted on crutches. It will likely be longer than that. Sampson can be dropped in standard leagues.
  • CLE Running Back #22
He was spotted in crutches after the game. Sampson’s absence will leave Raheim Sanders as a potential third-down back and primary backup for Quinshon Judkins. Jaleel McLaughlin is a potential practice squad elevation if Sampson is placed on injured reserve.
  • CLE Running Back #22
Sampson returned a kickoff and played on a third down play against the Jaguars before exiting in the first quarter. He left for the locker room with a knee injury and was promptly ruled out. Third-string running back Raheim Sanders will get more run with Sampson out.
  • CLE Running Back #22
Sampson went to the medical tent during the first quarter of the Browns’ Week 1 game against the Jaguars. He then headed to the locker room to be further evaluated for a knee injury and is questionable to return. Sampson is the Browns’ third-down/passing-down back; Quinshon Judkins will see more of those snaps while Sampson is out.

According to Cleveland’s Mary Kay Cabot, Judkins was “the object of much of the chippiness on Tuesday.” According to multiple beat reporters, Browns coach Todd Monken abruptly ended practice early yesterday because defenders were being a little too physical. The team could simply be giving Judkins the day off after taking some hits yesterday, but this is worth keeping an eye on. Browns No. 2 RB Dylan Sampson operated as the team’s starter with Judkins sitting out.
  • CLE Running Back #10
Judkins earning a three-down role would be a massive development for the second-year back. Last season, Judkins appeared on only 35 third downs last season for the Browns, which ranked third-most on the team behind Jerome Ford (113) and Dylan Sampson (44). With Ford now in Washington, Judkins and Sampson should push for plenty of opportunities on third down this season, but any additional work for Judkins would add to what is already a strong fantasy profile. Despite not being known for his abilities as a pass-catcher, Judkins still managed to finish second on the team in routes (162) last season and put together a respectable 26-171-0 receiving line on 36 targets. He’s currently boasting an early fifth-round ADP, but Judkins could have a chance to easily exceed his draft slot if his third-down usage is ramped up under Todd Monken.

Sampson led the Browns in carries but still ceded six attempts to his backups and another five to Cleveland’s wide receivers. Sampson was ultimately doomed to committee duties the moment he was drafted by the Browns in the fourth round. The team had already taken Quinshon Judkins two rounds earlier and Jerome Ford was in the mix as a competent backup. Even when he got the opportunity for more work, Sampson wasn’t particularly impressive. The rookie averaged a dismal 2.7 yards per carry en route to just 175 rushing yards. Sampson wasn’t the only back to struggle in the Browns’ horrendous offensive environment, but he did play notably worse than his backfield compatriots. Browns fans and dynasty managers will hope that Sampson can take over as the team’s top option on passing downs next year. He caught 33 passes for 271 yards and two scores this year while averaging a stellar 1.9 yards per route run. With Ford headed into free agency during the offseason, his role should be Sampson’s for the taking.
  • CLE Running Back #22
Sampson was the third running back on the field to start the game for the Browns, as Raheim Sanders and Trayveon Williams both saw snaps before the fourth-round rookie. Sampson’s 11 carries wound up leading the team, but his 27 yards weren’t what fantasy managers were hoping for. He had a 25-yard run negated by a holding penalty, but this was a disappointing day for Sampson, who had a chance to step in as the lead back. Sampson will likely find himself in a committee again when the Browns face the Bengals next week.

Speaking on the Pat McAfee Show, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said he “would describe” Jalen Hurts’ (blood clot) status as being “out indefinitely.”

Hurts’ blood clot was initially a superficial issue in his calf. Unfortunately, the clot has moved and the situation now appears to be quite serious and, per Rapoport, “scary.” Rapoport said Hurts will now undergo treatment, “which, a lot of times, is blood thinners.” If that treatment option is deemed necessary, Hurts would not be allowed to play. Rapoport believes Hurts will be sidelined in Week 6 “and likely beyond.” Tanner McKee is his replacement.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reports that Josh Jacobs “has filed a civil suit seeking a permanent injunction restricting access to records from his May 23 altercation with a woman at his home.”

Demovsky notes that the NFL is trying to get the video of the altercation as part of its investigation. Jacobs is trying to prevent anyone from seeing it, citing everything from protecting the woman’s anonymity to future burglary prevention. We have no idea how this will play out, but Demovsky reported in late September that Judge Marc Hammer “denied the request by the victim in the Josh Jacobs case to have the records permanently sealed.” Jacobs is appealing this ruling. It is unclear when or if Jacobs will play in the NFL again.

Andrew Thomas (groin) was seen working off to the side on Thursday.

Thomas, the Giants’ left tackle, RT Jermaine Eluemunor (calf) and EDGE Abdul Carter (calf) were all seen without jerseys, working on the side field with the training staff today. Expect to see all three listed as non-participants. Thomas has played through a couple of injuries this season, and seemingly has a good chance of suiting up in Week 6 against the Saints.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt (undisclosed) was not seen practicing on Thursday.

Croskey-Merritt has played through soft tissue injuries for weeks now. He played through a groin injury last week, and the same issue could be bothering him today. Regardless, Croskey-Merritt still has a chance to play this week and today’s absence could actually benefit the starting running back. The Commanders face the 49ers on Monday night, so Croskey-Merritt has extra time to rest and rehab. Stay tuned.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Tanner McKee will start for the Eagles until Jalen Hurts’ (superficial blood clot) “medical situation is solved.”

McKee, 26, is a towering pocket passer (6'6/231) with 97 career dropbacks. He has two career starts and has made appearances in two other contests, averaging 6.8 yards per attempt and a 73.8 percent adjusted completion rate. McKee was the subject of trade rumors last offseason, but luckily, the Eagles kept him. He faces a Panthers secondary missing its two starting perimeter cornerbacks, though he has almost exactly 72 hours to get himself ready and the Eagles’ pass-catching corps is banged up. He is a viable QB2 in superflex formats, but he offers a wide range of potential outcomes. McKee is backed up by rookie Cole Payton. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo thinks the team could reunite with Andy Dalton, whom they released last week.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo believes the Eagles could re-sign Andy Dalton.

Dalton is “an option” for the Eagles, who are down to two available quarterbacks this week, Tanner McKee and rookie Cole Payton, with Jalen Hurts having been ruled out preemptively due to a superficial blood clot in his calf. The Eagles released Dalton last week. A few teams have reportedly checked in with Dalton since his release, “though there’s familiarity and a clear role in Philly for him if he decides to return.”

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reports that Breece Hall (quad) is working with trainers on the side field on Thursday, yet remains week-to-week.

This is a small but positive update. Hall typically works on his quad rehab program elsewhere or simply observes practice. Today’s return to the side field will still result in him being listed as a non-participant, but as Cimini says, this is measurable “progress” for the Jets’ top running back. Braelon Allen will undoubtedly get the start this week, but perhaps Hall has a chance to return in Week 7 against the Dolphins. Stay tuned.

Jalen Hurts has a “superficial blood clot” and will not play in Week 6 against the Panthers.

The Eagles released an official statement announcing the news. Per their statement, Hurts took a cleat to the calf in Week 4. He went in for treatment the following Thursday and an ultrasound revealed the blood clot. Doctors ultimately cleared him to play in Week 5. He continued to receive treatment over the next two days. After practice on Wednesday (yesterday), a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. The team has now ruled him out for Week 6 as they determine the next course of action. They didn’t comment on how long Hurts will be out, but it’s possible this is a long-term issue for the veteran quarterback. Tanner McKee will draw the start versus Carolina.

Stefon Diggs (hamstring) did not practice Thursday.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn said he is hopeful Diggs will get some practice reps in later this week. Diggs missed Week 5 with the hamstring issue, and a DNP today puts him on the wrong side of questionable for Week 6, even if Quinn remains optimistic. Terry McLaurin and Chig Okonkwo led the team in receiving last week. McLaurin should pull away from Okonkwo as he puts more time between himself and the hamstring injury that previously knocked him out for a week.

Baker Mayfield (thumb) did not practice Thursday.

Mayfield will be ruled out for Week 6 tomorrow. Having not thrown a football since his Week 3 thumb injury, he’s also unlikely to suit up for next week’s game against the Panthers. Jalon Daniels will draw at least one more start versus the Steelers this week. His rushing production will keep him in the QB2 ranks for Sunday’s game, but a lack of passing numbers makes him a weak fantasy option.
